Why are hearing co workers so afraid to talk to deaf co worker?

Before I lost my hearing I had a deaf coworker. Because my signing was limited to finger-spelling and basic greetings and she couldn't lipread very much, I e-mailed her when I had to talk to her. Similarly, she e-mailed everyone else, or wrote stuff down. I always smiled and waved and all that...

Long waits are ok after all....

Having company really helps to pass the time and make a long wait seem shorter, but unless it's a restaurant I really love, I wont wait more than a half hour. Even if I am with my boyfriend.

I need help from all your brilliant minds and experience!

I don't see any harm in continuing to use ASL and teaching your kids more ASL- even if there wasn't this situation, kids raised with a second language tend to do better in school, have an easier time learning a third language later, and many more benefits. You and your children could only...

    Please Help!!!!

I don't think my impending deafness is a gift. It's just how I am. But things are harder for me now that I am HoH. I am isolated, struggle to get my thoughts across to people, I miss music, I miss my fiances laugh, I tried to buy groceries today and the grocer was talking about only god know...

Dealing With Idiots Who Ask for Rude Signs

I am surprised this happens as much as everyone says it does! How annoying! I am still just learning sign but the few times people have asked me to teach them something it's 'I love cupcakes' or 'I would like a coffee'- nothing vulgar. I think I'd just shake my head and dismiss anyone that just...

    Learning ASL after hearing loss?

Yeah, I can't afford any ASL classes either, and the one I did try to take was clearly not intended for HoH or deaf students and the teacher would say everything- like the meaning of a sign, and never write it down. I can't lip read so I was lost. (Makes no sense, I know). I learned...

Switched at Birth and our children

The show was nominated for five teen choice awards and is very popular. I don't think many kids think it's 'retarded' because of the deaf aspect- maybe more because it's got that whole 'girl teen romance drama' aspect and kids don't want to admit they like it. When I was a kid I loved 'Buffy...

    Hi everybody(: I'm new..

Hi and welcome! I recently lost much of my hearing (can still hear about 15% of what I used to) and I am learning ASL but I am only at a basic level. Try to stay motivated! I'm actually having a lot of fun learning and the more ASL I am exposed to the more I love it. You can always skype with...

    Learning ASL after hearing loss?

Hi everyone! Has anyone here learned ASL as an adult after losing their hearing? I am 26 and just starting to learn although I have some basic signs from my childhood. My fiance is learning too. It's a beautiful language and I feel like I am picking up a lot, but I am worried about fluency...

    Deaf Educational System?....

I had that happen to me as a young teenager in California. I was at McDonalds with my neighbors family who used to babysit me. They were all deaf or hard of hearing. A woman came up and left a card exactly as you describe on all the tables and then started making rounds picking up cash people...

    Deaf Community...

I don't feel like the fact I am HOH should make you nervous. Treat me like a regular person, be yourself and don't think that you are better because you can hear. I grew up hearing and now that I can barely hear at all, I notice people have started to mouth things to me really big and super slow...

    Please Help!!!!

CuriousLearners: There are actually some great documentaries out there all about deaf contributions (and sign language contributions) to the world. Go onto Netflicks, Hulu, or just do a google search for 'Deaf Documentaries' and I'm sure you'll find some. I forget the name of the one I saw...

    New, Recently hard-of-hearing. Hi all!

It's so great to meet you all! I would love to practice my ASL with someone some time- I'm on the west coast so time might be tricky, but any one-on-one practice would be great! I tried taking a class at the community college but the teacher spoke all the lessons (didn't write on the board) and...
