Dog owner for a dog door issue

Hi dog owners,

I need your opinion about a dog door. It is for my two small dogs: Jack Russell and a mixed Basenji/Beagle.

Do you have a dog door for your house? What brand it is?

We used to have a doggy door for our two Labs but they are deceased now. I don't remember what brand the door was. It had a magnetic closure on the flap. It was big enough for me to crawl thru when I got locked out of the house once. :lol:

LOL I remmy I got locked out of my house and it was at my old mobile home and crawled thru the window and my cats was looking at me, thinking "Mom are you nuts?"

I never had a dog door cuz my dog would run off and start barking at everyone who is on the street.
 
I wouldn't have a dog door just for the reason Reba mentioned. If the home owner can get in by the dog door, so could a burglar.
 
ha ha. Poor Reba. It was a good thing that some neighbors did not see you during a dusk in case someone calls the police.

I have seen some display at a store. I noticed that some brands have a different shape of magnet at the bottom of the door. One door has a long magnet, and other brand has two squares of magnets.
 
I know some expensive model has some dog collar attachment that makes it only open to your dog. Don't know where.
 
I have a doggy door with a magnet that keeps the flap close at all times. Its PetSafe Training System (that's the name of the brand). I also have a hard board where i can close it at night or when i'm not home. I use a rubber stopper on top where they can't open it.

i would recommend that and a couple of sensors in the house. the sensors can be placed in the corners of the wall/ceiling and will let you know that someone is in the house or an alarm system. the sensors can be off during the day when you're home. Once you go to bed.. you can close the doggy door with the hard board and the sensors comes on automatically.

aww I'm sorry about your dogs :( My daughter did that once when she got locked out. She crawled thru the doggy door.. that's when I realized how easy it is to get into the house.. so i use the stopper and hard board so no one can get in.

that would be awesome however.. it came to my mind... if the dog has a collar like that.. how easy would it be to catch the dog and use the collar to get into the doggy door?

Really good point.
 
There are special dog doors that you can use that only works for dogs. What you do is get a special collar that transmit a signal to the door so that the door opens for the dog, then locks up after the dog walks away.

It can be available at Pet Store like Petco, Petmart, Petware house and other.
 
Do you have a dog door?? If you don't want other neighbor's owner dogs come into your house through dog door. You can put a fence to keep away from other dogs in your neighbor
 
That is a great idea for a small motion detector to let us know that my dogs come in the house. Is it a possible to have a wired motion detector instead of a wireless detector?

The dog collar device is new to me - the door let them in and out with their wireless collar.

I have green wired 4 feet tall fences for my entire backyard. I plan to have a doggy door in the back porch to let my dogs go in and out awhile I'm out all day. I probably won't let them inside my house in case of a raccoon or Jack Russell hunts and eats a dead mole or chipmunk. ugh!
 
I have a Yorkshire mixed, and no I do not have a door for my dog to go out by himself, but he does give me this stare when he needs to go out, and when I see it I asked him, do you need to go to the bathroom he would waggle his tail, that's when I know when he has to go. It sounds strange but that's how I know he has to go out. :P

My two Labs allowed me thru their door but I guarantee you that no other humans would even be allowed over the back privacy fence much less thru their door. CHOMP! :lol: It was bad enough having them stick their wet muzzles in my face when I came thru their door.

The doggy door that we had opened into the garage, not the house. The door between the garage and house was also locked, so I couldn't continue into my house. I got a screwdriver from the garage, then went back outside to my sliding glass doors. I used the screwdriver to disassemble the door so that I could get in. A bit of a project it was. :P

BTW, I didn't lock myself out by forgetting a key. The problem was the lock on the slider door; it dropped into place accidentally when the door slid shut. It could be opened from the inside only. We finally had to dismantle that lock because it kept doing that.
 
Good dogs you had, Reba. I have two Shih/Poo dogs. They would probably lick the burglar's face and ask if he needed any help.:P

We also had a lock for the doggy door but never needed to use it because of the Labs presence. A few times we used it to lock their door to keep them in the yard while we were working on something in the garage. But our male Lab (brave and lovable but not too smart) kept banging his head on the door at full speed, expecting it to open. Not good.

Good dog! Can I borrow him? We have too many moles. Ugh!

My male Lab used to catch the moles. He would get his nose into their tunnel and follow it until he caught it. (Messed up the yard a bit but it was worth it to get rid of the moles.)
