yea Defee -- thats what i had mentioned in my earlier post  it was true back in the 80s during Mayor Marion Barry's administration til he was busted for freebasing crack on video and thrown in jail for it then right after that there was a MAJOR Metropolititan PD overhaul resulting in the firing of SO MANY DC officers who were found to have criminal records and other shit like that and a pretty lengthy investigations in this along with other DC government changes and the federal government took control of DC government for a while -- in some areas it still have control of DC -- DC's current mayor is Anthony "Tony" Williams and hes done alot for DC that were positive

My town's english meaning is violence, though any type of crime is very rare.. it's just the ancient norwegian vikings just liked to give tuff sounding names. heh heh. Though.. I call my town "Vagina" with the name sign because I can see how similar it is to the actual town name, when mouthed (no sound necessary). LOL me bad. Hubby doesnt know the actual nickname, though.

Loveland, CO, USA-- Gateway to the Mountains, I think. I thought of that cos I once considered moving there. Heh.

I wonder does cities near you have nickname and abboveration (sp?) ? Some cities in Minnesota does...

1) Minneapolis- City of Lakes because of so many lakes in one major cities. It is also called Murderapolis (that is true!) Because Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper called them that due to high crime such as murders years ago.. Abb. name is Mpls

Minneapolis-St. Paul is nicknamed Twin Cities because they are so close to eachother, just across Mississippi River, so that where MN MLB team get name: Twins

St. Paul- Minnesota's Capitol City, of course its seat of Minnesota Government. Nicknames keep on changing when new mayor swears in. I forget what it is now...

Key West (Florida) has two nicknames...

1) Bone Island
2) The Conch Republic

I have heard the story of how Key West came to be known as The Conch Republic, and supposedly, there is a story for for how KW came to be known as Bone Island. Sadly, I'm not very good with the legends of either, so I'll have to let this post stand as is.

Alaska - "The Last Frontier" or "The Great Land" ..........

Here in Seattle, we have too many nicknames...the most known one called "the Emerald city". Don't ask me why they call it, tho we got lot of trees in the green belt area (area where u can't build houses/apartments on steep unstable hills of Seattle.) The trees hold the hillside together, basically.
