This is a hearing world, we ALL live in it.

So does "white world", "male world", "Christian world", and etc etc. Sorry, I strongly disagree. This is our earth.

If you had looked at the posts above mine, you would see the last two posts were in response to posts directed at me.

I'm not sure why you have it out for me Jiro, but I've not done anything to you. Please lay off.

wondering how many more locked threads will it take for you to "get a hint"

You are not doing anything to me but you are causing harm to yourself. You are resisting.

Get what hint? That differences of opinion and ideas are not welcome here?

Threads don't get locked because of one member.

What are you talking about????
I didn't correct your post, I don't even know what post you are referring to.

Thanks, Bott. :laugh2:

No one likes a self-appointed monitor. That's only happened to me one time on this forum. After dealing directly with the person, it never happened again.

Could you clarify? Are you saying this world is not set up for people who are hearing, white, male, and Christian? (of course, I am thinking within US)

My thinking is that our society caters to the majority (hearing, Christian, etc), often times to the point where the minority is overlooked.

No. I wonder, why do you said "hearing world"? Sounds like we are not fit in this earth if we are deaf... If so, there goes for "sighting world", or whatever "majority world" is.

Just like another thread, I will say - Wow, just Wow!! Took me awhile, but I finally managed to read all 13 pages again. This is totally unreal, but then again, it's not really, since it's the same thing over and over and over.

but it is, it is a sighted world, it is a hearing world... in most places in the world, it is a sighted world, it is a hearing world, look at the way our society is set up... there are very few places that a Deaf person, or a blind person can go into without feeling like they are left out, like they are less. Why do you think most of the time we get the short end of the stick on education, why places don't always answer our phone calls, why we are seen as less. There are places where we do not even get VRS, where there is no "equal access". We use to be sterilized, we use to be told not to marry people that we actually wanted to (some of us still aren't able to). We can not communicate with everyone around us... even with the people who are most important to us. So yes, Karissa, yes it is a "hearing world" that we live in...

Of course, I know there are problems we faced, yes. You can call our earth "hearing world", whatever you want to say. It is your right to say so. I don't agree with you for call this "hearing earth (or world)" instead of just earth (or world.) I don't see anybody (except this AD forum) says "Chrisitan world", "male world", "sighted world", or whatever it is. So, why "hearing world"? :dunno:

How many of our politicians are Deaf? How many presidents? How many educators? How many parents? if not 100%, then it's the vast majority that are hearing that are making decisions that affect our lives. the saying "it's a hearing world" means that the majority of the power base (those that make decisions that affect us all) are hearing. We have an unprecedented opportunity today to have our voices heard. To stand up and tell our stories. more and more Deaf are reaching positions of authority and power. Laws like the ADA has helped us in so many ways. This law (ADA) was passed by authorities that were all hearing. (if there was a Deaf among them I had not heard). To say this is a hearing world, is not to belittle the Deaf, but to recognize the reality that we as a group still have a long way towards equality.

A little long winded (sorry) but hopefully coherent. Hopefully not off base from your question.

because of our experiences... if you were to get into a womans study class, you would see it being called a male world, if you were to go into a religious studys class, you would see it being called a christian world. We are the minorities... and we wish that things were different... no matter if it is... :hmm:

What would make you say this? We aren't sure of the cause of the hearing loss at this point.

You said in your second post that there is a chance that the loss will progress. I made the connection between connexin 26 and profound deafness. Natalie was born with this mutation and, obviously, only through testing will you know if it will progress.

I just made an assumption based on what you had posted:

"We have seen genetics at to try to find the cause of the hearing loss and they are speculating (until the blood work comes back) that she has a connexin 26 gene mutation which is causing the hearing loss. This is one of the reasons I feel it would be beneficial for her to learn ASL because there's always a chance of the hearing loss being progressive. Why not learn now to be safe?"

I'm not a hearing specialist but I'm a pretty good Deaf one; though I'm a work in progress on that. :giggle:

Have you all ever thought that maybe parents of newly diagnosed children haven't had time to aquire all the knowledge you all have about hearing loss? So we may have similiar opinions and you just chase them away for being "phony"?

You should find some hearing parents that have deaf kids , that way you will have more in comments with the parents. You should ask your daughter's doctors if you could put up a sign wanting to start a group for hearing parents with deaf or HOH kids. Then there will be no hurt feelings . You need to take more control of things in instead of blaming people for how they made you feel.
Only you are in control of your feeling, if you're real you would not care what other people say. If you can't believe in yourself how to expect people to believe in you. If you want to be that 'perfect mother' for your child you will need to get some thicker skin, you're going to run into a lot people misinformed about being HOH and they're going to tell what your can't be more than you will want to hear.

Wirelessly posted (droid)

You may never know the cause if you child's hearing loss. Hearing loss rates vary even among family members with the same genetic cause. You simply don't know what to expect. It's wise to plan for more hearing loss if that's a real possibility.

Nobody in my family before me is deaf that anyone knows of. Just me.

One granddaughter is now going for hearing testing but her Mum, my eldest daughter, has already taught her kids baby sign so if it turns out that she inherited whatever gene I carry then she's already ahead of the game.

We still are not sure where my hearing loss originated from. Part of it was most likely due to birth related issues, but we are not sure where my SNHL came from.
