    Deaf Signers with Glasses...

Once, I was signing the music at church and I happened to be standing next to the communion table. I knocked over a jug of grape juice...luckily there was more...

    Is deafness a disability?

I know deaf people that can communicate with people who don't know sign language. Yes, they are oral deaf (even though they know and use sign language as well) but even those who are not oral can communicate through writing things down, texting, etc. It is not impossible. I believe it is wrong...

    Is deafness a disability?

This is one question I've heard debated a lot, so I was hoping to get some opinions here. I feel that deafness is not a disability and that d/Deaf people can do anything hearing people can do. It seems that in Deaf culture, deafness is not regarded as a disability, but people outside the culture...

From what I understand, Sim Com is using Engilsh and ASL simultaneously; please correct/add to my definition if it is incorrect. I find that I Sim Com a lot because the people I use ASL to communicate with on a regular basis Sim Com. I was wondering if anyone here uses Sim Com and curious what...

This helps me a lot because I have decent vocabulary, but my grammar is lacking. Thanks!

Oy! Teacher Tells Student He Could Be Arrested for Talking Badly About Obama

While I agree that teachers shouldn't directly debate with students, teachers should never discourage political discussion in their classroom. Doing so is a complete waster of a teachable moment. I am a high school English teacher and if a situation of this nature comes up in my class, I set...

Learning to read as a deaf/hoh person

It makes me so angry that so many crappy teachers exist. Any decent teacher makes their classroom a safe place for all students and ensures that every student has what they need. One of my favorite quotes is "Being fair is not treating everyone the same, but making sure that everyone has what...

Learning to read as a deaf/hoh person

Wow...that is horrible. I am a teacher and behavior like this from teachers disgusts me. I wouldn't treat my 12th graders that way, let alone kindergardeners. What is wrong with people?

Learning to read as a deaf/hoh person

The other day, I saw another post that mentioned that most deaf people don't read phonetically. This makes sense since phonetics involves decoding by sounding out the words. However, I'm wondering what methods deaf people use to learn to read.

    Switched at Birth petition

This seems a little ridiculous. People will always find something to complain about. Also, Katie Leclerc is HoH, not hearing. Of course it's not going to be perfect--IT'S TV!!!

signing deaf of Deaf teen gets CIs despite family opposition

Great story! I strongly believe that CI should always be the deaf person's decision and no one else's (which is why I believe young children shouldn't be implanted). A teenager is perfectly capable of making this decision and I'm happy that they made the right decision for them!

Will a cochlear implant work for...

While there is nothing wrong with CI, I personally think young children shouldn't be implanted because they should decide if they want to be implanted for themselves. That being said, you are definitely doing your best to make an informed decision, and that is admirable. Just remember that he...

Can hearing people be culturally Deaf?

I have heard varying opinions on this;I have heard that hearing people can assimilate into Deaf culture and become culturally Deaf as long as they understand the culture and language and spend adequate time in the Deaf community. On the other hand, I've heard that hearing people can never...
