    Piercing

You know, I would go talk to your piercer, maybe talk to a couple of them. Wear your hearing aids and glasses and see what they say. Any professional piercer will take existing factors into account. From the pictures I've seen a bar across the helix won't be a problem as long as the...

Parents want hearing school to get state funding

Then, conceivably, it could be cheaper to board those students at the school in Pittsburgh than to pay in to the Clark school. Therefore, no custom ordered private school for you!

Parents want hearing school to get state funding

And put my 3 year old on the road 5 hours a day? I'm not sure that's even legal. Of course I want LRE, but exactly how does anyone enforce it? Next year she's in a TC classroom with 3 other deaf/HOH kids (and this is the biggest dhh program in the northern half of the state). That's as LRE...

Parents want hearing school to get state funding

WSD doesn't start boarding until 1st grade and we're not moving until next summer. So, since we have no private schools willing to accommodate special needs kids in our area, my daughter would remain in the public school, in a class all by herself with a private teacher because the self...

In most areas there are no private options. You go to the public school and make the system work for you. not everyone has half a dozen deaf school options. Extended IFSP info: originating link Maryland Public Schools (pdf)

The move in to the school system's Early Childhood program, usually a self contained DHH program. In some states, there is the option of the extended IFSP where they can remain in the EI program until Kindergarten.

Putting your deaf children in which schools...and why?

not really... her aided thresholds just brush the bottom of the speech banana. She'll learn to speak when she wants to, if at all.

Putting your deaf children in which schools...and why?

I totally agree. This is what has been so hard for us with Katie. We got a lot of overly concerned comments when we dropped speech. The teacher who was around when the DHH program was set up said she didn't think there had been more than 4-5 "no speech" kids in the district in almost 20 years...

You should ALWAYS sign the IEP and, if necessary, note that you disagree. Not signing does not mean you do not agree. In fact, it can be seen as agreement by some. Ask the Advocate: Parent Threats - Refusing to Sign the IEP by Pat Howey - Wrightslaw

Parents want hearing school to get state funding

Look, I don't know about you, but I'm not sitting on a chest of gold. Moving costs money, jobs must be found, housing established... none of which we can do now. No money, no job, no house... not exactly the way to kick off a new school year, huh? What the hell else am I supposed to do...

Parents want hearing school to get state funding

WTF?! Exactly how is a public school supposed to enforce ASL use by non-native users? Just like they cannot force my kid to use speech/English for whatever reason, they cannot force others to use ASL. Would that not also be a violation of the law? There are no other ASL users in the...

Parents want hearing school to get state funding

It's not a 'shitty program'. It's just not a good fit for my kid. It is a good TC program that uses SEE and speech therapy in a mainstream setting. Just because it's a bad fit for one doesn't make it a bad program for all. Besides, the next parent has a choice, too, as did the parents...

Parents want hearing school to get state funding

There's nothing to fight and I'm not just living with it, as you put it. If it were 'living with it' she would end up wallowing in a TC/mainstreamed hell with no friends she could talk to, a terp stalking her around the school and wasting a butt load of time sitting in a speech room learning to...

Parents want hearing school to get state funding

This is not about oral education... this is about 'cater to me, my kid is special'. They HAVE a school available to them at no cost. Use it. Move near the school and enroll your kid. That's what I have to do. THEY made the choice for their child to be oral. THEY decided private school...

Putting your deaf children in which schools...and why?

I think the most shocking thing I've noticed (so far) in mainstream programs is the lack of encouragement for DHH kids to excel beyond 'average'. Katie has some language issues stemming from the fact she is being raised by hearing people who didn't know her language. She is delayed several...

Help with PAPER please : AGAINST COCHLEAR IMPLANTS

Personally, I think any procedure using general anesthesia is major. That being said, while I also agree the last thing the world needs is another sensationalist report from either side of the debate, that may just be the point here. A debate. It could even be an assignment. I had to...

Stupid Questions from an ASL Rookie

i don't think anyone's implying the 2 should be used simultaneously. It's simply not possible. But it is VERY possible to learn 2 languages at the same time... use both interchangeably. Kids learn this way all the time simply from exposure to 2 languages and are bilingual before they are 2...

Stupid Questions from an ASL Rookie

When you have kids, regardless of their hearing, do both. You will not confuse them. You can combine the 2 languages in your home and you children could become bilingual.
