What do u think of Job Fairs ?

Sucks ! These people at each corporate booth
are idiots they don't even know how to hire
deafies right on the spot anymore... they were
bunch of idiots they repeated same comment
to every job seeker "Just look at our website"
over and over and over and over... I want to
create a new rule for every job fair that they
MUST have at least one person with AUTHORITY
IN HIRING at each corporate booth just to
interview and hire right on the spot !!!!
That's exactly the purpose of job fairs
is to interview and hire on the spot.
I really miss the old times years ago
many job fairs used to be like that,
but NOT anymore..... Because they tell you
just look at their website over and over and
over.... That does NOT work that way.
They are bunch of idiots for telling us
to look at their websites .. only because
I already looked at their websites FIRST
before I went to the job fairs asking them
about opportunities... they kept telling me
just to look at their websites....

I had a chance to get hired at a local ski resort and they said I had first dibs on the job because I went to the job fair. I noticed people who went to the job fairs tend to get better feedback on what kind of jobs they will be doing. As for the people saying, "Check the website.", fuck that! If that's how they are in hiring, then who knows how they will handle working with you on the job?? It's too scary to think of it! If they are lax in hiring, then they are not worthy to be your employers. Just my 2¢!

Job fairs is okay.. my hubby went to one and talked to several people who seemed interested in his background and after the interviews all they said was they would let him know and he never heard from them. My hubby doesn't think its worth it..a total waste of his time. :\

I have never really attended a Job Fair before -- have always done the 'hard way' -- by hitting the road and looking for any openings and looking through newspaper's classifieds.

Nono.. I didn't get the job because I was preoccupied with another, and that was back in October. But it was nice knowing I can get the a good chance at a job even though I am Deaf.

I for one was at a job fair several times during high school and also attending mom's job fair and i have noticed not very many want to hire anyone anyhow without having them fill out the applications, my mom was a recruiter, all she did was get the applications then talked to people and etc. NOW she hires poeple on the gut instinct, and some didn't work out some did so that's a good thing! it depends on how it's run. i already told mom if u don't hire a deaf person at starbucks thier going to slam u with a ADA lawsuit. So mom had me put word of the mouth out so now most HOH working there!

do NOT even bother to read any resumes at all...

that's why I never bother goin to job fairs cuz I don't feel comfortable with most jobs cuz the most jobs require higher level of college degree and blah so.. I prefer find a job that matches my goals and all that.. but at least havin a part-time job for a while won't kill you but if u can't find a job then keep the job and find 2nd job that's about it.

(Dallas) I did went to Job Fair back in 1993 before I was hired as full-time job. I was not comfty with one of those companies that I was interviewed before they set up in job fair and they rejects me for some reasons. I did not bother go back again in the future. It is good opportations for deafies to interviews with treps there but my experience with one of companies was terrible!!!!

one problem is the jobs offered is not related to my major, I notice a lot of business and computer related job fairs but never psychology i also have seen some police type of job offered at the fair but i think its funny that they dont have job fairs for all majors.......I was very disapointed with the lack of psychology/counseliing job offered and what really bothered me was a lot of the jobs require a MA and I dont know why undergraduates check it out since they have a long way to go.......I cant even bother to apply since I dont have a MA yet......in a few years I will.

It's usually best to talk with someone in the Psychology department and find out information on jobs and job fairs. They will help you better. Not every job fair meets our expectations. Here at RIT, the Information Technology department sends out emails to every student under that major with information on upcoming job fairs. The same goes for NTID.

I have been goes to Job Fair and got job. Later, for almost a year, I got laid off. Oh well.. at least, I get good experience add on my resume.

I got my jobs thru other methods than job fair. I used the unemployment office more oftens than going to a job fair. I got my weekend job when I passed by a huge "Help Wanted" sign on my way to my regular job and I got hired on the spot by the manager a couple minutes after I handed him my application.

Other way is to go through a temporary agency and if you work for the temp agency's client and do good there the client may hire you for the permanent labor force. However its a crapshoot when it comes to finding work. Right now my wife is working at the Maytag stove factory thru the temp agency and if she stays a year there and keeps out of trouble, she could be added to Maytag's payroll instead of the temp agency's payroll, but as I said, it's still a crapshoot.

When other Deafies ask me about any jobs I usually tell them to go to the temp agencies because the chances are slightly much better than applying directly to the temp agency's client.

Very true ... Thats how i got a job at Goverment through the temp service ... it took me 7 months to land this job as prement job ... so now i work here for almost 4 and half years ..
