So there, a law, not just ANY law, but a law applicable to ANY person who wishes to become a Citizen from a FOREIGN country. Not just Mexico - ANY country.

You may be eligible for an exception to the English and civics naturalization requirements if you are unable to comply with these requirements because of a physical or developmental disability or a mental impairment.

To request this exception, submit Form N-648, Medical Certification for Disability Exceptions. This form must be completed by a licensed medical or osteopathic doctor, or licensed clinical psychologist.

THIS thread is about illegal aliens. It is about rallies protesting Arizona's "new" immigration law.

I thought it would be pertinent to understand exactly what was being protested.

So far, I have learned the following disinformation about Arizona's "new" immigration law (I hyphen "new" because its an old law) - many believe it to be a racist law and anti-immigrant.

However, here are the following FACTS about immigration law in the U.S. :

1) If I am an immigrant, I can stop speaking English after I am 50.
(Yay!)

2) If I am a foreigner and I want to enter the United States "legally" I must pass an English test if I am younger than 50; unless I qualify for an exemption.

(special note: Arizona's new law makes it perfectly "ok" for an RAS to be "lack of coherent English if younger than 50" since it is a requirement to pass an English test to become a legal immigrant).


So yes, it is a federal law - for immigrants.

Now, lets assume you are NOT an immigrant. Lets assume you are a U.S. citizen .

For Reba - interpreters in hospitals for foreign languages is common. Interpreters in U.S. Courts is also common (and required). I was not referring to the language used by foreigners needing to be interpreted, I was referring to the language used by Americans - which is English.

Courts are conducted in English. Prescriptions are written in English.

Now, anytime you purchase .... anything, it has instructions in English and Spanish.

I know, ASL is the exception (but not really). AMERICAN Sign Language is considered a foreign language in England. If illegal Brits suddenly and in large numbers attended Gally and demanded that teachers and students accomodate them by signing in BSL, would you be awfully thrilled? Or, would you (correctly) feel that since they are now HERE, they should learn the language?

one thing that can happen sometimes is that some people who are racist or have a lot of negative stereotypes refuse to see that in themselves, instead blaming others, often groups or individuals with less overall power/privilege than them.

Well, aren't you the entitled one? I don't know what makes you think that you are entitled to an answer on your time schedule, but that attitude is indicative of the difficulties you obviously have with social skills. Put that overblown ego back in your pocket. It does you absolutely no good around here.

A child entering kindergarten already has a native language. And they don't just start learning English at the age of 5. You are attempting to speak regarding subjects of which you have no knowledge, and it certainly isn't doing anything to help your already suffering credibility. It is like doing battle with an unarmed opponent.
