Social Security #, Driver's Licenses a Risky Mix

See Cheri, you're not ALONE.... :dance2:

I work for the State of NC and for Driver License in particular. NC has eliminated this practice of putting a SSN on the license quite some time ago. Believe me, you should take this article seriously about your SS being on something like this. Your SSN is about as close to a national identity number as anything else you have on you. If wrong people get that number, you will be very unhappy somewhere down the road. Some of you might have heard the horror stories of people trying to get their life back after somebody stealing their SSN. In some cases, it has taken them years... I know enough from my work to know this is not something to take lightly.

Any state that bucks this trend will lose federal funding at some point in time and for all states that is no laughing matter. It is absolutely unconscionable for any state to continue this practice. If you have the opportunity to change your SSN to another number on your license, then DO IT!

Think about this, If they tried to steal your driver's license, You think they would steal everything that is yours that you carry on you?, like your social security card? Which people do carry that with them in their wallets and in their purse. So if you being robbed, They take everything, What's the point of panic over a driver's license just because some people have their social security number on it, If you don't have your social security number on your driver's license they might ask you for your social security card when you are renew your driver's license, or other places. :thumb:

I just had my renew license couple week ago, and they asked for my ss #, birthdate, and address and name and then took a picture of me and wait for 5 mintues and it's all in the driver's license. I always put in my wallet where I kept for my checkbook and major credit cards.

Yes beware of that!

FYI: Some states do issue driver licenses with ss# on them while other states don't. But if you still have them on, go to the branch and has it renewed with no SS# on it .. you have to tell them in advance. Or wait till yours due for the renewal then do that .. but obv, it's best to renew it ASAP!

I did when I moved to Florida several years ago and got new driver license with no ss# on it. I warned my old friends about that back then. It's good that guy threaded about it here to remind the deaf world to increase your and their IDs.

Beware of the ID theives! You may never know.

You are not supposed to keep your Social Security card in your wallet. You are supposed to keep it in a safe place.

Keep your Social Security card in a safe place with your other important papers. Do not carry it with you. For further information about protecting your card and yourself, see Identity Theft and Your Social Security Number (Publication No. 05-10064) and Your Social Security Number and Card (Publication No. 05-10002).

Yeah I do not carry my social security card in my purse but if I have an appointment that required me to show my social security card then I bring that information with me along some papers that may be needed as well....

But I will not carry it in my purse or in my wallet....That's why I don't have my social security number on my driver license...

Also make sure there is no SS# on your personal checks, too!

To add something to consider:

ID theiving is the fastest white crime!
Assume it still is.

That's right. I used to work for pizza joint as a pizza delivery driver. I have seen some SSN on the personal checks and phone numbers of home and work...

Ouch!

I was a pizza delivery driver twice, but that was almost 2 decades ago. I tried to remember but it's vague .. ofc it's too long time ago to memorize that small detail, lol.

Hmm, watch them out lol.

There are some good pizza deliverymen that are honest hard working ...

I am just showing you an example here of what could happen in real life.

Door buzzes... opens door ... Pizza deliveryman says

" Hi Here is your pizza it is pepporoni, extra cheese and one liter of Pepsi. Will you take cash or check? "

You say

" Sure , come on in, set the pizza on the table... Let me get my check book. It is in the kitchen. "

The kids jump around the table as if it was a birthday party and gifts are about to be opened while the pizza deliveryman stands in the kitchen watching the kids being happy while you get the checkbook out of the kitchen drawer.

You say

" Here is a $20.00 check , please have a good night and God Bless Thank you very much, please drive safe. "

He goes

" Ahem , yes I just need your ss # you know, it is company policy on the check please ma'am ? "

( You are not required to give your ss # on a check or any checks for that matter. )

You write SS # down on your check.

He smiles with an evil smile inside while keeping a good angel boy's face saying

" Thank you and have a good night ma'am "

At this point the pizza deliveryman leaves your home to go on the next pizza call.

You gather your kids around to pass some pizza around and fill the kid's cups with some ice cold Pepsi and have a plate of pizza and Pepsi yourself.

Never even suspecting nothing or even think twice about what happened at the transcation ( money for food or things ) and what just really transpired ( happened ) here.

He drives off into the night to steal your identity. :-o :ugh: :pissed:

Safety tip:

I recommend you have $20.00 Cash for the pizza deliveryman. This way you protect your checkbook and your S.S. #. The checkbook is to be used for paying the rent & bills only. Nothing else.

The same story above applies to guys throwing a party with his buddies for a Monday night football game on t.v. and a keg of beer chips popcorn and pretzels.

Give cash only, man !!!

Say I got no checks, I got $20. cash here it is man, Thanks for the pizza. Drive safe, take it easy on the gas.

See him to the door and say Have fun, man !!!

Give him a good hearty slap on his back to send him his way and raise your beer with the guys in unison.

That is it.

Don't even write your SS # on your checks... Not cool.

Speaking of the personal checks with SS# on them .. I meant these pre-printed personal checks that there many were made in the past esp. in times pre 1980's .. I'm sure more and more people don't have them pre-printed with SS#, anymore.

But to speak for those others whom may still have them on .. not writing SS# on them but those pre-printed checks. Shred them and order new ones without SS# pre-prints.

Web730 brings up a good point about the pre-printed checks.

I also forgot to add....

Make sure to tip the pizza deliveryman too. :) :thumb:

I never bring SS card with me, only if they need proof like applying for jobs... I keep it at home. Minnesota don't put SSN on drivers liscenses and ID.

:topic: speaking of 1980s...

Any check kiter purchases anything but their checking account does not have sufficient funds. That's exactly why they could not have cash or credit cards. They may sound like borrowing without bank approved loan. Of course, it is FREE INTEREST. Yet, it is against the laws. Cleverly, they use their personal check in a few days before depositing full cash into their checking account since the bank system takes longer to move the large volume of personal checks into the U.S. central banking system called the Federal Reserve System. That is why they did not have electronic check system which is also similar to Telecheck...

Right now they use Telecheck in order to avoid any bouncing check or insufficient fund….
