Just your thoughts and opinion on things.

do you mean you feel that the educators priority is to teach them how to talk, instead of usual school education? I think that is what you are saying but not quite sure. Still working on the morning coffee.

Yea, one of my friends who has a deaf daughter is battling the school district about it. Her daughter is 3 years old and goes to the Deaf school part time and she has already made great progress but the public school rep who is responsible for her IEP thinks she is not making progress cuz she hasnt developed any oral skills and want to place her in an oral-only preK classroom next year. Whenever her daughter is in an environment where there is no signing, she clams up like a shell so the both of us know that an oral-only environment where no visual cues are offered would just make her regress. My friend wants to place her daughter at the deaf school but her family and the specialists are criticizing her or giving her a hard time about it. That was prompted me to type that cuz it is always happening and it is frustrating.

The parents have A LOT to say in a childs IEP. The school can not progress with out the parents approval.

Geez. She is not progressing because she can not speak. For crying out loud the child is only 3 and deaf. This is not speech education this is general education. It is not up to the school to place her in an Oral only class. That is what speech therapy is for.

In my opinion, most people don't know how to compromise or even just give a little in order to get a part of what you want.
i.e.
- Some members of minorities do not even bother to try to learn the ways of the majority out of respect or even just trying to learn from them. Such as Hispanics who don't even want to learn to speak English and just move to Miami where most people know Spanish or American tourists who expects everyone else outside of US to speak English and disrespects the culture of where they are visiting.
- Gay people who demand for marriage and religious people who demand that marriage (originally a religious institution) is for only 1 man/1 woman. Surely there's a solution in here somewhere! Notice I say demand for MARRIAGE.... which is different from demanding equal rights.

Seems like nowadays people DEMAND rather than compromise.

it's the matter of budget & practicality. Let's say they changed the route for you... and then you moved out a while later... they'll have to change the route again - thus creating more confusion. Even just by altering the route - it costs money and time. That's why several delivery companies (such as UPS) invest million of dollars in GIS to create efficient delivery routes. The result actually worked thus saving them a great deal of money and gas.

That's one of reasons why I want to try to get a job at DOT (Department of Transportation). Something about improving the efficiency of road traffic and mass transit fascinates me greatly. :dunno:

if they make more bus routes available (instead of removing them due to budget restraints), i'm sure more people would ride public transportation. besides, it's not difficult to place a bus stop at every corner (or at least a 3 block radius). as for mass transit, i think there ought to be an increase in funding since too many people are dependent upon their automobiles. <mad>

I think parents should take more responsibility for their children's education and stop expecting the schools to do it all for them.

**nodding in agreement** i was an education major at one time, but had to quit due to my hearing loss. now that i think about it, that probably worked out for the best since i probably wouldn't have had the patience (eventually anways) to deal with parents who constantly throw the responsibility of educating and disciplining their children in the school's lap.

people always talk about budget restrictions when citing reasons why new bus routes can't be developed, but i think that's a bunch of hooey. <mad>

somebody's gotta appoint me to Secretary of DOT! :mad2:

i agree. i think bus stops should be located in a 3 block radius. in the neighborhood where i live, i need to walk 8 blocks and cross a busy 4-lane highway to reach the nearest bus stop.

that would suck! I live in the Twin Cities - an area with nearly 2 million people including both downtowns and the surrounding metro area. My own city (suburb) has a population of maybe 60,000-70,000 yet there is NO bus around here for miles, at least that I know of. I have not seen any bus stops! Or buses, for that matter!

They have the Valentine's stuff out NOW????? Oh for cripes sake. :thumbd:

LOL - I was at Target the week before Christmas and not only do they have Valentine's stuff out, they have all the summer/swimwear out too!

Hubby knows that if we had children, I would prefer to homeschool them than place them in the current education system because it is not up to par nowadays.

Parents nowadays have the power to homeschool their children.

I plan on homeschooling my children for at least a few years. If not homeschooling then I will definitely encourage them to learn on their own and not just rely on school for education.

My question is...

If a parent home school and isolate their children from society..
Will that deprive them of social skills and make them naive of what is out in the real world being sheltered through home schooling?

depending on the community one lives in, there are activity groups specifically designed for parents who homeschool their children. some public schools also have similar programs for parents who choose this option. parents can also design social activities and lesson plans that will encourage socialization with others.

in terms of being naive about what's happening in the word, that can always be remedied by having a specific time to discuss current events by reading newspapers on the internet or in print.

Being homeschooled doesn't imply being deprived of ANY social activities whatsoever. If I do homeschool my children, I'll make sure to have them engaged in a lot of activities that involve socializing.

if i had children, i would either place them in private schools or i'd homeschool them.

Um, ya. Buy holiday stuff, and if you want to get away from all of the commercialism, buy a swim suit and take yourself on a vacation...and buy luggage, sun lotion, camera, hawaiian touristy looking shirt...

They get you any which way you turn.

I feel homeschooling ,is to shelter this kids from what is really going on out in the world. Another words. " Overprotective parents."

i can understand why you feel that way and i respect your opinion. since i don't have children, i can't say for certain whether or not i would homeschool them. i would most likely place them in private schools instead. if my boyfriend and i get married and have children, that's something we'll have to discuss together.
