Jack Kilby, one of the two inventors of the integrated circuit, died yesterday at the age of 81. Kilby developed the integrated circuit while working for Texas Instruments, a position he held until his retirement. From his obituary in the Lone Star Times:

Just think of the impact that the integrated circuit has had on our daily lives. I was awakened this morning by an electronic clock radio, shaved with an chip-equipped electric razor, had a cup of coffee from a microprocessor-controlled coffee pot, set my electronic thermostat, got in my chip-laden car, and drove to work, where I used a fax machine, computer, PDA and cell phone, all made possible and cost-effective because of integrated circuits.

Yup...its one of those things you don't think about. How many times do we think about the guy who's invention started it all (IMO). Many probably wouldn't even know the name, yet they are using his device to read about it on-line.
 
One of the many "unsung" heroes of technology. We don't know their names or faces but they had tremendous impact on our daily lives. They are the "nerds" of this country but I greatly respect the inventors and engineers who perservere thru disappoint and criticism.

If you see someone wearing a pocket protector today, give him/her a hug. :)
 
Gee that's interesting cause this am cleaning out my garage the pocket protector I have in there was really getting a lot of my attention.

In answer to the eternal question "Is it better to be a jock or a nerd?", the following is submitted:


Basketball superstar Michael Jordan makes over $300,000 a game: $10,000 a minute, assuming he averages about 30 minutes per game.

He makes about $40 million in endorsements annually, which translates to about $178,100 a day (working or not)!

Assuming he sleeps 7 hours a night, he makes $52,000 every night while visions of sugarplums dance in his head.

If he goes to see a movie, it'll cost him about $7.00 ($20 if he buys a soda and popcorn), but he'll make $18,550 while he's there.

Amazing isn't it? BUT:

JORDAN WILL HAVE TO SAVE 100% OF HIS INCOME FOR 270 YEARS TO HAVE A NET WORTH EQUIVALENT TO THAT OF BILL GATES.

I am not too familiar with that name Jack Kilby nor ever heard about him before. But, I am sorry that he recently passed on. :( Rest in peace Jack Kilby. :ily:
 
well if it wasn't for him we wud never survive without a calutator.. and many more things to have that were invented if I am wrong just correct me then ;) otherwise.. rest in peace jack kilby
