I watched a sad film that millions and millions of American people live on the street, it makes me wonder
why cannot they live in shelter homes?

Why they spent their money on bottles, and choose to live on the street rather than saving these money for shelter's board fee.

Why can't they live with their family until they find a place to live with their unemployment benefit in rent house/caravan?

I heard recently that Salvation Army don't do their job properly in helping homeless people.

WHY WHY WHY!

many of these people don't have family or have severe mental illness
including depression. This list of homeless people that are Vietnam vets
is very long

I understand Red~Rum...

It is very difficult to know exactly how many people are homeless. It is impossible to keep count of the many people who might come onto the streets and come off them as well...The Salvation Army tries to help those who are homeless .. Like in December to March Cold weather Shelters, Hot Soup and Hot Meals...and helping people to find a place of their own...The Salvation Army needs to work Harder to help those that live on the streets.. I agree with that Part. These Homeless People need to be off the Street get a job or something sometimes there are Children Involed and I hate to see Children Suffering cuz Their Parents can't provide them a roof over their head and keeping them warm and serving them Good Meals. And, Sometimes, the person being looked for doesn't want to be found. This decision is respected and addresses are not exchanged without full permission. Anyone who chooses to remain 'missing' may do so.. that What the Salvation Army Believes.

Since drugs and alcohol are a prominent factor in homelessness.. Homeless Decide not to get the Help they Need but just lay off on Drugs and Alcohol...That is real Sad what they are doing to themselves. :(

Not all homeless people want the comforts of a shelter. I work part time in a liquor store that services the homeless community here in Simi Valley. They keep the store in business. Some of them are our best customers. We cash their welfare or disability checks, and they in turn buy everything they need from our store. So I know most of them very well. As strange as it may seem, a lot of them are very happy and comfortable with the homeless lifestyle. Most of them live in a large field about a mile from the store, and they stop by on their bikes every morning to buy their food, alcohol, soap, toilet paper, etc. They don’t mind being homeless. They have their own little community that they’ve built up, and they’re happy with their stress free life. One of them is a guy I used to work with several years ago in a warehouse. After he got fired for showing up for work after one too many "power lunches", he wandered around to other jobs, eventually working his way up to a management position at El Pollo Loco. But one day he just got fed up with the fact that his ex-wife was taking all his money for child support, and decided that he would snub her by quitting his job so he wouldn’t any income for her to take. He’s been living in the field for over a year now, and he loves it. He’s never been happier. There’s no way these people would ever go to a shelter. They wouldn’t be able to drink anymore, and they would have to give up their carefree lifestyle and conform to somebody’s rules. They have everything they need and want in life, and going to a shelter would mean giving it all up. In a way, I almost envy them sometimes.

Actually, Salvation Army does try to help them... but they don't do anything. I had this discussion in my class a couple weeks ago. In reality, these people have a lot of potential to do things. They just decide to be lazy and hope for an easy way out. Nothing is easy and should be taken for granted. However, it's different... if that person has a mental illness, then they should seek help.

well... it's sad but true that
Salvation Army (and other organizations)
were/are full of bullshit they tend to claim that
they're "helping these homeless", but I just
learned from others that these organizations
were full of bullshit these organizations
wanted to get all of "credits" to help
homeless just for these taxes purposes
receiving more tax benefits to their organization
much more than any benefit for these homeless people...
I noticed some of these organizations
gave "too many rules" to these homeless
people so that's probably one of these reasons
why some of these homeless people
do NOT want to be at these shelters....

For an example,
How do you like it if the organization
tells you that you must show up at
their door before 8:43 pm or else
it will be completely locked down ?

I never give homeless people money. In fact, if I'm near a fast food joint and I pass a homeless person on the way (and in New York City, that's highly likely) I would go into the restaurant, buy a hamburger and fries and give it to the homeless person. This way I know that my money is spent on something other than booze or crack...and at the same time, I know I've helped someone. That's something I can afford to do and it's simply decent...after all, it could very well and very easily be ME lying around in paper-thin clothes and cardboard boxes for shelter. So, ya know, I try to give a little.

yea we have problems with homelessness and mental illness of varying degrees or just ppl who simply dont wanna be living in a home with a fixed address --

id like to add in the group thats now growing called "working poor" -- theres more and more families put out of a stable home all cuz they just simply CANNOT afford housing even if the family has combined income and yet it doesnt help afford housing PLUS food and etc for children -- so often are sent to shelters for families with children til they find a more affordable housing -- housing rates has skyrocketed and the "McMansions" (known as "mini mansions") are cropping up at record paces and the more affordable housing are being torn down, condemed or whatever else -- those ppl are the newer group being recognized now and often fall thru the cracks even if they keep working their asses off :-/

I have done that in NYC too, but the result was not always very good. Some of the homeless people got mad and refused the food. Sometimes it is scary to expect the homeless to accept only to be bitched out about it.

Yeah, Fly Free, most homeless are simply working poor who can't afford the rent on a home. There are lazy folks as well as drunks and junkie homeless but most of them are working poor type...80% of the homeless in NYC are women and children. I think there needs to be some changes in how we deal with mental illness homeless. Many of them can't function very well and we need to do something!

So what about the homeless who stand on street corners with signs that say "will work for food" or something like that? Not the ones that say they will work for money, but for food or clothing. How can you say that they want to drink or be bad?

I feel sorry for the homeless, especially here in minnesota. Last year when I was walking to work I saw all these signs up on a buncha windows that said, "What word do the homeless in Minnesota use to describe the fear of death? ---- February." February is our coldest month, with temperatures that can get to -25 without windchill. I still feel sorry for them even if thats the life they choose.

Mostly the homeless brought it on themselves...they chose to be alcoholics and drug addicts..they cant work if they are addicted to alcohol and drugs so i dont feel sorry for them..the mentally ill are a different story..the government should be able to provide care for them..i dont understand why they are out in the streets really..if i became mentally ill, i would be expected to be put into mental facility..good grief!..
There is no excuse for homelessness! in my opinion...

It's very sad and heart rending seeing those homeless people on the streets. I've been haggled by homeless people just about everywhere I've been at -- but not all are like that.
I've heard stories that some are homeless due to their alcoholic/drug problems, financial hardship...etc. Some are runaways (kids and teenagers, that is). The government and local districts have done as much as they can in reducing the numbers of homelessness, but they can't really force those people to go to Salvation Army or any other homeless shelters. It's up to those people to decide what to do with their lives.

Sad...I know, but it's really out of our control, really. We just try to plant the seed in thier minds and make them aware there are facilities out there to help them...services, etc.

What do you mean?....Please explain what you meant!...

I feel sad for the homeless people.....and sometimes, I do give them money only if they are not too pushy!....and there are times I would give them food if I had any with me at that time....

every time when i see any homeless person
i get very very emotionally upset ...

for long time i told myself that i never met
a Deaf homeless person at all UNTIL
a few months ago
for the first time I met a Deaf Female
homeless in Wash DC street while I was walking
with my other 2 deaf women friends on the way
to the conference We ended up talking with this
deaf homeless woman for a pretty long time
but then she walked away abruptly disappeared...
She did NOT even ask for money or anything...
She's blonde messy hair thin and about early 30s
She does NOT look like a homeless person immediately
NOT too obvious at all..

I felt so upset after our conversation...
and I did not have any cash with me cuz
I just got a layoff from work.. I was very
surprised and disappointed with my 2 deaf women
friends they have very good jobs
and they have lots of money they did NOT
even offer any cash or nothing... Sigh..

Please remember that NOT all homeless people
are drug addicts... and NOT all of them
are LAZY ! I just read an article that
a married couple with full time jobs are homeless
due to the very high cost of living !!

i believe that some homeless people got angry
and frustrated about getting food only because they prefer
to get money or house rather than food...
Some of them do NOT care about food.

That is So True Y..I agree with you.. There are Mothers out there who are homeless too with Children Hiding out from Abusive Relationship.. and is Scared to Go to Shelters because sometimes Abusive Husband or Boyfriend will Find them...

I feel bad for some Homeless People who lost their good jobs and thinking their Life is over and they hit on the Streets..

But, Life out there is not Easy For Anyone and Some of them just Gave up.

I have seen a very few homeless people downtown Cleveland when I am down there during the day.. The Mayor Of Cleveland wants homeless off the Street and put them in Shelters cuz The Mayor of Cleveland did not want them getting killed.. She is a very good Mayor of Cleveland and cares about People in the Cleveland Community.

What there is it to explain? I thought it was plain and simple that some homeless people refused to accept the food that I tried to give them. They got mad and had attitude towards me. Guess some homeless people are either "too proud" or don't want food but money.

Methinks she meant she wanted the details on the incidents -- what exactly eventuated in those incidents where those homeless people got mad at you. I may be wrong, but it may be that...:dunno:
