Gallaudet President Announced!!

Hey Mookie, post your comments, don't be afraid to speak your mind.

That has never stopped me from speaking my mind.

Sometimes I take it alittle too far so has everybody else too.

I am also surprised by the reaction to her being mainstreamed growing up. The point that I. King Jordan was late-deafened but he was good enough in 1988 is a very important one. But also...maybe Jane Fernandes didn't have a choice when she was a kid. That happens to a lot of deaf people - they are raised in a hearing world, and then when they are old enough (go to college, move out of parents home, etc) they discover the Deaf-World. I hardly think Jane is anti-ASL, it's not her fault that she learned to sign later in her life. And actually, I think this is going to happen with CI's too, but that's another subject!

What matters is that she is qualified for the position. Part of the qualification means she must understand Deaf culture, and since she was chosen, obviously she does understand it. How she was RAISED isn't as important as how she is NOW.

This is just my .02 cents.....

How will we be able to show we are the real deal when it comes to successful Deaf people being highly trained and very motivated in the working world ?

Whenever our egos on deaf pride shrink, I m sure more people from the outside will appericate us more. I promised myself, I will never work in a deaf school. I don't hate deaf people or dislike working with them. I want to show a different role model to deaf children and adults what they are capable of. They do not have to be a deaf teacher or counselor. They can work in the laboratory running tests like other hearing people do. I am truly tired of their pessimism about hearing people dislike deaf people. They might not have a good experience with hearing people, but they did not get a chance to show them what they are capable of.

"Well, Jane Fernados had a plenty of time to type a cover letter and edit her resume while she researched and compared the candidates' cover letters, resumes and application sheets from the Gallaudet University Library. Yep, she works as a Gally provost on the campus of GU.

Not fair for Ron Stern and other candidates with Phds who have not touched Gally for a long time."

I do not care who the committees picked whether if its Mr Stern or Dr Jane. I m sure that they would rather to pick a good president who knows what deaf people truly need. lf they think Mr Stern is a better candiate, they would pick him for sure. Unfortunately he didn't met their expections. I personally do not know Dr Jane or any of those running candiates. I have heard of Ron Stern through the deaf community. He is considered well known to the deaf community, but his popularity should not be the first pirority.

I feel like gallaudet students do not understand what it is like to be running a big university and be busy all the time. The president job can be really stressful and a lot of paper work to do. There might be no time to socialize with gallaudet people. I often hear gally students complain about Pres Jordan not having the time to stop and chat for a bit. Later, they labeled him as snob just because he can't chat with them. I think its quite selfish for them to demand his time. When a person who is a vice president or president of the univeristy, he/she will be so busy with numerous things. How can he or she have the time to chill out with students? Why don't students just worry about their academic work and other important things.

I'm dating a hearing guy whose father is a dean of college education at the Uni of Az. He works 6 times a week and he hardly gets home until 6 PM! He does not have the time to socialize or party with the UA students. He is always busy and he has to travel other states for giving out speech.

I would recommend you not to attend Gally if you are not happy about the news. Then, go to other college that you might like. The Board of Trustees are the ones that picked her to become the president.

I think that it is a good idea for you to attend at a hearing college. It is better education than Gally or NTID. If you are not good in English, some hearing college students have English problem, too. So, you should take English tutor during your free times.

It is not worth for you to rally at Gally again. You have to make your own decision to attend Gally or a hearing college. Maybe, the Board of Trustees might realize how sorry they are when they find out that there are a very few students at Gally.

I like this advice, it is a mature way to protest.

You're saying a protest is brewing. Well, I have to say it's not surprising. Jane Fernandes has alienated the students as well the faculty over a range of issues. I think she's not as impartial as she should be when it comes to resolving conflicts etc.

Anyway, from a source, the students and staff wanted Wiener or Stern and they gave better speeches than Fernandes, and they had an connection with the students.

And the students think Fernandes is somewhat of a Audist. Maybe there's some truth in there, but then I wouldn't know.

My 2 cents - the BOT obviously thought, based on her background, interviews, etc that she was the best person for the job. The fact she was mainstreamed should be a non-issue. I think protesting and rioting put Gallaudet in a very bad light, and will put the focus on the negative side of the deaf community - mainly the inability to move forward or be flexable on any deaf culture issues. Students go to Gallaudet to get an education, and it looks to me like they are more concerned with the socialistic aspects of the choice that was made than who was really best for the job, and who will help move them forward into the 21st century.

Students blocked the front entrance to Gallaudet University, and right now, students are sleeping on the pavement out front. It is heavily rumored that all 3 gates will be blocked tomorrow and possibly this week. Many students are upset that Fernandes was chosen when it was clear the students wanted Stern. I think there will be constant protesting until either the Board of Trustees changes their mind, or the protest will probably be ongoing in different stages until Jordan retires/Fernandes takes over. Ryan Commerson was thrown out of Gallaudet and given Persona Non Grata status for getting up on the stage and urging people who were upset with the decison and announcement of Fernandes as president to walk outside and assemble outside the GUKCC(Gallaudet University Kellogg Conference Center).

Doesn't surprise me.... I just hope they will stay positive in the national spotlight. I wouldn't sleep on the sidewalk outside of Gallaudet campus though. Sleep in the G.U. dorm then get up in the a.m. grab something to eat and drink then head out to protest with signs, banners and guest speakers at the rally, and most important of all, stay out of trouble with the law.

That is really too bad. It is really over now.

The students should think about transferring to a college this fall no matter what.

Why don't you spread them to tell them to consider and transfer to a college? They deserve to know that they need to prepare and find a college.

What the students want is not necessarily always in the best interest of the university. While Stern may be a great guy, the fact of the matter is that he was not nearly as qualified as Jane Fernandes. You can say all you want about how she "isn't friendly," but in the end it comes down to one thing: Who is best suited to run the university? I fully support Gallaudet and the Board of Trustees in their decision to appoint JK.

Eyeth, I'm looking forward to readin your opinion, if you feel so inclined to share. :)

I'm curious.

Do students at other universities have a say in the selection of their presidents?
