Ever go to a grocery store (or any other similar store), shop for food (or other things), go to check out at the "20 items or less" lane... and end up having to wait behind a customer who has more than 20 items?

I have.

In fact, last night... I was at Walmart when this happened. I had a cart with 13 items and was on my way to check out. I saw a couple check out lanes that were open and those were for "20 items or less". Since I had under 20 items, I decided to use those check out lanes.

One of them had a customer who had a cart full of things. So, I decided to go to the other one.

WTF!? This woman cut in front of me quickly as I was approaching the check out lane. Oh well, shit happens... it's only another customer and another couple minutes longer.

Oh, wait... she has a cart full of things! What the hell!?

Not only did it take too long, she was also clumsy as well! She would try to pile everything up on the itty bitty counter (which was actually intended for 20 items or less). Of course, things kept falling over since there wasn't exactly enough room for them.

As time went by, I noticed the line behind me getting longer and longer.

Yep, everyone behind me had less than 20 items. In fact, I was probably the only customer in front of them with over 10 items (except for the lady in front of me).

You're probably saying that I could have taken the other lane. Well, I'm glad I didn't. At the other lane, the customer was giving the cashier a hard time with the payment. He was going through his wallet trying to use various credit cards. One by one, they weren't working out properly. He was also spending his time loading the cart before making his payment.

Now, back to my check out lane... which I had to wait almost 15 minutes at. When she finally left, I quickly put all of my things on the counter. Of course, all 13 of my items only occupied half of the itty bitty counter space. The whole process actually took about a minute including the swiping of my credit card, putting the bags in my cart, and getting my receipt.

As I walked away, the customer at the other check out lane was just finishing up.

Boy, talk about customers being ignorant and not respecting the "20 items or less" policy. Although the cashiers could say, "no"... it's more of making the customers happy than denying them. Ugh!

So, any of this ever happen to you? I'm sure it has... discuss! :)

Yep. At Wal-Mart too.

I was in this lane that was I think 12 items or less self-checkout.

This woman had TWO carts FULL of crap. It looked like she was redecorating a bedroom or something. There was a whole bunch of pillows, a couple comforter sets, lamps, bathroom stuff, etc.

She was taking her own sweet time scanning the items and would be stacking the items up in ONE cart to the point she nearly broke a lamp when she put it on top of the pillows and it toppled over.

What did I have? Toilet paper, a 18 oz of Coke, hydrocortisone creams, and cat food.

Sometimes, I wish I could just take my cart... bump her cart(s)... and just shove them all out of the way!

Know what's worse? I forgot to add... when I finished checking out, they opened another lane. Argh!

oh hate that. With a passion.

Usually after a LONG-ass wait, I've had just gotten to be able to unload my stuff onto the conveyor belt and boom, another lane opens up, and the available cashier always looks at me like he was expecting me to just load the stuff back into my cart and head over to his lane instead. *sigh*

Talk to the manager / cashier and demand them to abide by the 20 items or less policy or you will sue them for deceit.

I'd like to see you try that at your local Walmart. ;)

Yea I understand what you mean, Vampy! I love to check out myself! I hate to deal with cashier :giggle: Some people have FULL cart of groceries and other vary of items for that check out, that's so stupid. I usually have a lot of items, but not count how many I have. So I just scan fast and bag them (I used to be courtesy clerk, that's why I bag them fast...habit :) ) then pay the items then out!

If customers who are rude to you, such as passing on you or front of you then you need passing them off and report to employee about what happen then they will make customers so upset and don't bother you. At my local Wal-Mart, I like store managers because she was counted all customer's cart and force them to go in regular checkout and keep out from express checkout. I just like laughing at them, though.

I had seen that some customers got mad and tempt then left the cart in store and go out, just nothing to get checkout because they broke "20 or less items" policy and not respect to store manager.

Also, I agree with you about must respect and follow "20 or less items" policy.

I just speak my voice up and speak a bit louder, saying that this lane is for 20 items or less and that they should really go to other lane because I counted that they have like 29 items. Sometimes they will give me an attitude, but I think that customers are important. So if another customers start to say something, the manager or cashier has to do something about it right? Sometimes they dont. Sometimes they do. Sometimes if they act like I am a stupid Deaf, I say I may be Deaf, but I CAN read what is on the sign, saying 20 items or less!

As a former cashier for 2 years with two different retail stores, Target and Wal-mart, I do definately hate customers' crappy attitude when it comes to "20 items or less".
One time, a customer had more than 30 items but she was gonna pay 3 separate transactions for her other 2 friends and herself as well. I had to tell her, 20 items or less also meant for PER customer because we want to satisfy all customers as much as possible. She still argued so I called for my supervisor and once she took over, I told the remaining people in lines to go next empty lane so I can take over and finish them then back to my regular lane, oy the lady was pissed off after the supervisor talk to her, I dunno what they were saying but oh well.
If higher percent of customers are satisfied because they cooperate. It doesn't mean if they're gonna pay for the items that they're going to buy then it's "my way or the highway". *scoffs*
The less customers cooperate, the more frustrating everyone will gets.

Earlier I said "as a former cashier", I'm in accounting office due to the reason of cashiering. I do have tons of different stories to tell but one is enuff BUT now I'm starting to get tired of working for retail store so I am lookin for another job where I don't have to shop for food n needs...

Been there, and usually what I do is just drop everything and walk out and go other store! I don't give damn, if they waste my friggin time, okay with me, I go elsewhere! I end up gone to Weggy, They always open up another lane as soon as manager see 3 or more customer in same lane! So, I end up go to Weggy instead... :madfawk: Wal-fart!

Heh.

My ex roommate had to deal with it. We were at a 15 item and "no checks" lane with 3 items and the lady ahead of us had a full shopping cart of stuff and was paying through a check that didnt seem to be clearing through the checkscan system.

He became upset and was very loud, loud enough to make the big store windows rattle a bit and got us alot of attention. The manager came and opened another register for us to check out.

Yea eveytime I go to walmart I checked to see how many items I have then go to the proper lane unless I want to check myself out faster which I do all the time. I have noticed some ppl have more stuffs in front of me and i mummbled at them. They look at me funny I pointed my fingers at the sign and they go huh too bad. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I told the cashier next time I wont use your lane if you dont do your job. :D

A better question is...

Who here is guilty for the very complaint the OP has made? ;)

yeah I had seen that.. like on busy days before holidays like easter today.. yesterday it was too busy i was like WTF? oh well. I don't really shop like the days before holidays but I happened to go with mom for last min shopping for today :) some people don't understand if it's 20 items and less some people sometimes think it doesn't matter u know? :)

It never happen to me in here or Michigan... But I remember my sister told me the story, once she was working at Wal Mart as Cashier, so she use the cashier for 20 items or less, then a guy came up to her with maybe more than 30 items, she told him taht she can't take them unless he accept the seperate pay, he got blew up because of tax, it will be double tax for him to paying on. She said then, read the sign and move your little butt to in the regular lane, he did.

Yes, I have a couple times, there was also a sign that said "20 items or below cash only express lane" One customer had about 25 items in her cart and she was trying to pay her groceries with her credit card, but they casher would not accept it, even told her to use the ATM machine to withdraw cash.

I've seen one customer had cart full of groceries at Giant Eagle, and one casher told the customer that he cannot go to that lane, he has to go to another lane. I was thrill!! :giggle:

Some customers sure cannot read very well, the sign stated exactly how much allow in that lane only, I wish they would just follow it. It just show that they are selfish and careless.

That's exactly what I would have done.

Unfortunately, it was after 11 pm and Walmart closes their self-checkout lanes at 11 pm.
