20,000 Australian Koalas May be Shot

:( awwww wish there was another way without having to kill 20K of the koalas -- it would make more sense to put down the ones that are emancipated and suffering the most -- but SHOT good grief i think thats the worst way! what if the "professional shooters" happen to shoot them unclean and the animal suffers with the pain qq why cant they just capture them and euthanize them with dignity rather than be staring into a barrel of a shotgun qq

:fu2: at the hunters. My zoo would love to take care 4 or 5 koalas. So are the other zoos. BTW, I never have seen a koala in my life and would want to see one.

Interesting, fear of being overrun by koalas? Eek! Heh!

*gasp* world domination running by the koalas!!?!?!

*sigh* Now I knew it's true that the human race would come to an end someday!

It's quite pathetic that they just don't take these Koalas and sell it to the zoos.

selling them to the zoos are one idea -- problem is the koalas would not be very happy in captivity :(

Sad, same with Kangaroo too

What do you mean? I thought that kangaroos are now a protected species in Australia. I remember reading an article several years ago which said that the rednecks in the outback were protesting because the government wouldn’t allow them to shoot ‘roos anymore. Are the kangaroos starting to get out of control now?

They would be more happy if a special building or place was built specifically for the koala bears instead of staying behind the bars in order to make it look like their natural habitat.

Well, it may not be perfect but it's better than getting shot.

Well, I think there's nothing wrong with the culling of Koalas. Sometimes it has to be done. Though some of you did bring up a good point; yes, some of them should be given to zoos around the world.

I agree with Banjo...They would be more happy at the Zoo than being Killed.

I have seen a few of them at my Zoo in Cleveland, Ohio. They are so cute how they just held on the tree.

Over the last few years we have had drought conditions and the kangaroos moved into different areas looking for food and water and their population grew alarmingly. They were competing for food with lifestock and eating crops and the government had no choice but to cull a set number of kangaroos in select areas.

At dusk they are very active and very dangerous on the roads. At the time my husband was working in the country and had several near misses as they can literally jump from the bushes and land in the centre of the road. He saw many large groups of kangaroos grazing near roads. They can cause severe damage to cars as most people will hit them on country roads at high speeds, approximately 100 kmh. Normally they are rare to see near roads.

The problem is how do you build an area to hold 20,000 koalas and supply food and water when it is needed now not in the future. The cost would be immense!!! It's a nice thought but unfortunately impractical.

They look lovely and cute but I tell you, they have wicked claws and can cause serious injury if handled incorrectly!!!!!

Only in a couple of zoo's can you hold a koala like in the photo of me. There are none in Victoria.

I did not mean giving 20,000 koalas to the same zoo. They should try to give it to as many zoos as possible and sterilize a lot of them if necessary in order to control the population.

There are already lots and lots of Koala sanctuaries and they are a protected species. It is just to many in this case.

It is sad to say the problem is not enough food, they will die of starvation. They only eat very few types of eucalyptus leaves. Time is not on their side.
