16 bit would work just fine if there were processors that went as fast as current systems do, in 16 bit. But then you'd be limited to about 512mb ram max. Hell, everyone knows windows 95 is faster than windows 2000 or XP. 32 bit can address 4Gb of memory 64 bit can address 16Tb of memory.
