George Zimmerman Jury to Hear From Trayvon Martin's Mother

The prosecution is expected to wrap its second-degree murder case against George Zimmerman today with the mother of Trayvon Martin testifying that the person heard screaming for help on a 911 tape is her son.

Sybrina Fulton, the mother of the slain teenager, will take the stand on the ninth day of testimony in the Florida trial.

Fulton and Tracy Martin, Trayvon Martin's father, have been present every day of the trial and endured testimony about the shooting and their son's wound that at times have prompted them to abruptly leave the courtroom.

Zimmerman, 29, maintains he shot the unarmed teenager in self-defense after he was confronted and attacked by Martin, 17, on Feb. 26, 2012. Prosecutors allege the former neighborhood watch captain profiled, followed and then shot Martin as he was walking back to the residence where he was staying as a guest.

Fulton's testimony could be particularly powerful for the jury of six women

A major point of contention in the trial is who is heard screaming for help in the background of 911 tapes the night Martin was killed. Fulton claims it is Trayvon Martin screaming, while Zimmerman's father insists that it is his son's voice that is heard.

The prosecution hopes that Fulton's testimony will have an emotional and convincing impact on the jury and that the jurors will tie her words to the opinion of FBI audio expert Hirotaka Nakasone who testified earlier in the trial that it was not technically possible to identify the voice.

He said, however, the best person to identify the voice would be someone who is intimately familiar with the voice.

Fulton has shown that she can be a powerful voice for her son. During jury selection she said, "When I see someone wear a hoodie, when I see a teenager, when I see a kid listening to their earphones, kids walking home from school, everything reminds me of Trayvon."

It is unclear if Martin's father will also take the stand because he initially told police he doubted it was the voice of his son.

Zimmerman's father, Robert, may eventually testify for the defense. He has been consistent that the screams for help are from George Zimmerman.

Trayvon Martin was scheduled to graduate high school last month. Since his death, his mother has gone from a life she described as average to a grieving mother who has advocated for her son and victims of gun violence in the U.S. and abroad.

The prosecution is nearing the end of its case without a witness who saw the shooting or who started the fight. The dominant voice in the courtroom so far has been that of Zimmerman through the frequently played police interrogations of him describing what happened that night.

I don't think the prosecution will use him because of cross-examination.

The prosecution called the medical examiner, Dr. Bao who did autopsy on TM's body. Know what he said? TM was still alive since his heart was beating but was in pain.

Edited: Oh, Dr. Bao believes in his opinion that TM was still alive at the crime scene, I think.
Edited: Dr. Bao believes that his heart was still beating for up to 10 min after shot. In other words, it was beating until no blood left in it. He found abrasions on his hand(s).

Dr. Bao's testimony about the medical exam of Martin is very strange.

First, he was reading his testimony directly from notes, not memory. He got caught doing that, which required a recess while the court made copies of his notes for both legal teams. Supposedly, this ME has testified in many court cases, yet he tried to break the rules for expert testimony.

Also, he said that Martiin's hands were not bagged, and that the fingernail swabs were taken with one stick for all five fingers on each hand.

He wasn't sure of the lab protocols, and said it didn't concern him.

The lab took no pictures of Martin's palms.

The doctor didn't know for sure who did the lab tests for the toxicology, or how they were done.

This doctor seems very unaware, and uncooperative. The judge has to continuously admonish him on the way he replies to the lawyers. He's very defensive and argumentative.

I'm almost wondering why the prosecution put him on the stand. Very weird.

I've wondered that about every witness they have put up. Bao also said he now thinks pot may have affected Trayvon's behavior. For some reason the Judge is still refusing to allow it. This sets up an easy appeal for GZ if he should happen to be convicted.

O'Mara no making his motion to dismiss. Very doubtful this Judge will grant it. She has been quite biased throughout the trial. Plus these motions are rarely granted.

Oh wow, trial is about to be finished.

That was faster than I thought.

Judge will most likely deny this motion. Defense will probably call a few witnesses. I wouldn't be surprised by a verdict next Thursday or Friday.

What is kind of motion?

O'Mara finished the arguing Judgment of Acquittal so I don't see judge deny it.

I'm looking for fact, not opinion.

2:56 p.m. ET: Bao is excused with subject to recall. Judge Nelson calls for a 10 minute recess.

What is "subject to recall" means? It means his evidence is no good?

The motion for judgement of acquittal is still being argued. Yes she will most likely deny it.
