Are you sick of highly paid teachers?

Is your sister-in-law teaching in a public or private school?

Why does their daughter attend a private school?

School teachers are not the only parents who have to work extra jobs to send their kids to college. :)

I do not know much about my sister-in-law's job except that she teaches history in a public high school. Usually a high school teacher teaches several different grades, like 9th, 10th and 11th.
Correction: Their daughter attends a public high school, not a private school.
My brother and his wife (my sister-in-law) both do NOT have to work extra jobs to send their oldest daughter to college because they can afford it. I was saying that she works as a waitress just for the summer only when the school is closed. She doesn't get paid when she is not teaching for the summer. Am I right, Shel? Again, I do not know much about my sister-in-law's job. I asked my sister about this and she said she doesn't know much about her job, either. :)

Sosie, about getting or not getting paid in the summer, I think it varies across the country. In some places, if the salary is for 10 months, some personnel offices offer the option to stretch out the 10 months salary to 12 months....for some this is a good option in that sick leave, vacation, etc rates continue and cover the two months that they are off....

I guess my view is that if a teaching job requires advanced degrees then why doesn't it pay like it?

Easy....because people are willing to do it for the current rate.

You have to remember that most of the professions you have been comparing teacher to are private contractors. They set their price. Also, most of those professionals work 50 weeks a year and most people in them would kill to have a 10 hr day.

some of the prep elites schools like Philip Exeter, Groton, St. Albans, Horance Mann, etc have teachers with PHDs...

how do the left-wing liberal Democrats at the Congress practiced their choice?? see
How Members of the 111th Congress Practice Private School Choice How Members of the 111th Congress Practice Private School Choice | The Heritage Foundation

From your article:
Private-school choice is a popular practice among both congressional Republicans and Democrats. Thirty-eight percent of House Republicans and 34 percent of House Democrats have ever sent their children to private school. In the Senate, 53 percent of Republicans and 37 percent of Democrats have exercised private-school choice for their children.

So, because some Democrats use private schools, they are all jerks? If the numbers were 100% of Republicans and 1% of Democrats, would that 1% anger you? Personally, I couldn't care less where Congressional members send their kids to school. Why does it bother you that some Democrats use private schools? Is it because you have issues with anything not right wing/Conservative/Republican? If that is the case, not much point in debating with you.

Conclude?

It proves that some Congressmen (and the President) believe that public schools don't meet their needs. They exercise their freedom of choice to send their children to private schools.

Yup, DC Public school is really terrible, I believe so.

Here's a message to all of you criticizing teachers and unions and putting down the American worker, from congressman Tim Ryan. This is not right!

(the auto captioning is fairly good on this; you'll be able to understand what he's saying.)

Proves? Meet their needs? Maybe they prefer them for other personal reasons. Maybe they were sold on them by a skilled sales staff. Or they live close. Or they went there themselves. Or they think it is a better school for the child based on what the child needs. I dunno, and I don't care. My point was that the person posting that link and anti-Liberal diatribe was making an extremely biased assumption.

Has it occurred to ANYONE that they send their kids to private schools for security reasons? Politicians can be hated and wouldn't you, as a politician, be worried if a crack nut would do something to your child if you passed a law they hated?

If public schools aren't safe, why would ANY parents want to send them there?

Most, if not all, are safe for NORMAL kids. Be honest with me, if you were president, would you send your kids to the same school as if you weren't president?

Honestly, as a normal citizen, I did not send my daughter to public school. If I still had school-age children, I would not send them to public school. I don't need to be President to know that. :)

So what do we do? Do we close public schools and make all schools private? Is this another "woe is me, my taxes are paying for crap to let others have a free ride" kind of thing? Not everyone can afford to bypass the public school system. Should those parents work 2-3 jobs to provide this educational option? If all these people making $10 per hour worked 2-3 jobs, how high does unemployment go; 30-50%? Everyone seems to have a quick reply; "Get off your fat butts and work for it" but not all the results of that are considered. Some people are having a difficult time finding one job.

:gpost: Not everyone can afford private schools hence my support for public schools. I do realize there are problems with public schools and that they do not always meet children's needs but it is better to work on improving public schools than to close them all.

For the record, my brother and my big sister went to private schools. My little sister preferred public schools even though my Dad said she could go to a private school like my brother and big sister.

My state is on the verge of making teacher raises dependent on how well the students score on tests. Can you see the problem with this? Pack more students into overcrowded rooms and you start a vicious circle.

Not only that, but imagine how a teacher will deal with those students that are "less gifted" mentally. Imagine the teacher is having financial trouble and gets the new kid, who is a slow learner. Would the kids in the class notice hostility from the teacher due to this? Would seniority play a role in how students are assigned to teachers?

And let's not get started on those kids who are deaf or have other issues like CP or what have you.

No. Allow families to choose which route they want to take.

That's what we did. We paid our taxes for the public schools, and we worked hard and scrimped for our daughter's education.

If all these people making $10 per hour worked 2-3 jobs, how high does unemployment go; 30-50%?
I doubt that would be the scenario. Not every family would have to do that.

That wasn't my quick reply.

Another problem is one that was experienced in a local school in my area. The teacher was caught cheating, changing answers on her students' tests.
