Pay Docked because of Facebook status

I got a hefty 50% of my pay docked because the director of personnel at my workplace "heard" through Facebook (she is not a friend on my FB page) that I was using my sick leave to attend a funeral (my husband's grandfather passed away, and he was out of state). PLUS I will be docked again because she shifted my summer pay one week back.

I had already gotten my leave request PRE-APPROVED from both my principal and the supt of the school to use my sick time for this purpose, as I had plenty of sick leave time I had accumulated this year. When I returned from the funeral (three days), I got word that I was going to get docked as LWOP because 1) I cannot use sick leave for funeral purposes, 2) since the dead person was not a direct blood relative, then I cannot use the family emergency leave, and 3) for "lying" on my leave request by putting in sick leave instead of LWOP. The supt shrugged his shoulders and said, "well, that's policy so be it." My principal advised me to watch what I say on Facebook. My status was telling my friends and family (isn't that what FB is all about?) to pray for my husband because he was really hurt during this time.

I am just appalled. :mad2:

Damn...they have no heart! Sometimes, I hate policies!

Damimt, Im sorry to hear about that, Deafbajagal!

these people shouldn't have said anything.. a lesson learnt.

People might jump in and say, well, duh, don't use FB...but my point is...my leave was preapproved, so I thought it was okay. *shrugs*

Looks like one of your "friends" isn't really a friend.

I've thought a lot about culling out my FB except for people I really know and talk to in real life.

They are playing dirty with you. Do you have the pre-approval in writing?

Is this a re-post? Feels like a deja vu moment after reading the original topic... and the replies... especially Alex's.

Damn, now that you mention it, you might be right!

Oh some people have big mouths!

Some people can be spiteful to the point they have to squeal off to the boss.

I have no respect for those kind of people and you bet I am "choosy" about who is on my Facebook.

I will not have a co-worker on my Facebook.

At one time, I had my peers from college on my Facebook & just removed each one of them because I felt uncomfortable with them on my Facebook.

Sure enough, my vibes was correct.

This is where you need to ask yourself if you are comfortable with this person or that person on your Facebook.

"Chocolate on your nose, dearie?" I'd say that to that person... of course, that's me! LOL! :giggle:

I don't understand why bosses and principal let it bother them? If someone request a sick time, let them use it up. Tell her how many people she know use their sick time for a funeral. She doesn't and have no choice but give it to them so there is no need to target you because of your facebook.

Repost? This is something that happened to me a few days ago, and I'm trying to grasp how to deal with it...legally and morally. Plus how to support my family in the next two weeks because I can't even pay my rent thanks to the chuck of pay she took out.

And Bos, well, the personnel director is not a FB friend. I have strict privacy settings on...so it seems that maybe she heard about it through someone. I do have the pre-approved form signed, so that'd be in my favor...policy or not, once something is preapproved, they can't go back on it, can they? Policy or not...it's COLD what she did.

Wow! If it was pre approved, I would appeal their decision with the board members.

Sounds dirty. Like they are docking your pay to run you off, or to downsize and pressure you to quit.

I think a repost about a similiar situation with a woman getting into trouble with her employer for something she posted on FB

I think he meant that someone else had posted something similar before.

Totally sucks, Baja. I'm sorry it happened to you. You might try fighting it, especially if you are part of a union, but you might not have any recourse. All depends. You should talk to a Union rep if you are unionized. A lawyer might give you a free consultation.

That's why I dont like to post too much information online. Never know who could read them and have comments come back and bite me years from now.
