Teen: Retailer refused to hire over head scarf

Did the Muslim girl who applied for the job wear A&F clothing plus her hijab? Or did she wear just "Muslim" clothing?

Article didn't say.

oh typical response of underprivileged people who buy walmart clothes and you're probably jealous of "snooty" people wearing nicer clothes - namely AE/AF clothes.

Underprivileged? I work full-time. There's no way I'm paying $20 for a shirt or pair of pants when I can get it for much less. I hate Wal-Mart but consider them a necessary evil when there's no other place that's affordable enough.

If you REALLY wanna talk about snooty people - just diss on Prada and Gucci :laugh2:

Yeah, that shit is snooty.

uh.... each job has a specific parameter. For example - Hooter restaurant requires you to wear orange skimpy shorts and tight t-shirt. That is not a sexual harassment. BUT it is discrimination if they decline the applicants just because they do not have bigger boobs. It is discrimination if they decline her if it's because she is a trannie or wears glasses/HA or a Muslim/<insert religious affliction or nationality>

If the job requires you to have hearing capability because it involves a lot of phone calls, then they can decline you. Would UPS or Post Office hire a handicapped delivery man???

Discrimination Law is tricky which is why you're understandably confused about it.

Back to the woman who was turned down by AF. If she was wearing her head scarf and was willing to wear AF's clothes, would it still be right for them to turn her down?

Underprivileged? I work full-time.

there you go. many would assume anybody who buys clothes at walmart is underprivileged or illegals. you shouldn't do same for people who buy AE/AF.

Yeah, that shit is snooty.

Try Target or kmart.

no idea. but hey - as long as she can wear her head scarf while wearing AF... why not? it'll attract girls w/ head scarves to buy AF clothes! :cool2: I guess AF's not so open-minded....

It's not so much the people who wear the AE/AF stuff. It's the image they're trying to sell, which is an upscale, country-club mentality.

Yeah but good points altogether. I doubt delivery companies would hire handicapped folks. However, when it comes to a job that has duties involving answering phones among other things, some companies are willing to made accommodations, such as re-assigning the phone duties to a hearing person, etc.

The article doesn't say. So all we can do is speculate.

And what's wrong with looking nice compared to looking like you're-on-the-cheap?

You can buy nice clothes at Wal-Mart.

:barf:

The only good thing that Wal-Mart offers me is discounted prices on household products--but that's all.

hahahaha true. Nice clothes at wal-mart? well unless you live in hick country, we can tell what you're wearing.

Would you wear wal-mart's "nice clothes" and fake watch if you have a date with a remarkable beautiful woman who dressed nice to kill? (no I'm not talking about a bitchy, snotty, materialistic woman). You just gotta spend a little more on nice clothes and dress nice occasionally.

That's what I was curious about. If her overall look is "trendy" except for the scarf, does the store have a defense?

If she does wear A&E clothing and she has the right personality for selling, then the store should have given her an opportunity to prove herself.

Unless we find more details, I guess we won't know.

See? You call me out for stereotyping people and now you're doing it to me.

Enjoying yourself?

From some of the above posts, it seems that people are "judging books by their covers."

Maybe ADers aren't so liberal after all.

:hmm:
