Yeah but good points altogether. I doubt delivery companies would hire handicapped folks. However, when it comes to a job that has duties involving answering phones among other things, some companies are willing to made accommodations, such as re-assigning the phone duties to a hearing person, etc.

I object to your identification of people with disabilities as "handicapped folks."

It is not a matter of being willing to provide accommodation, but one of legal mandate.

From some of the above posts, it seems that people are "judging books by their covers."

Maybe ADers aren't so liberal after all.

:hmm:

I was thinking the same thing. Its amazing the amount of prejudice that comes out when one attempts to defend another area of prejudice.

Whatever. I'm totally lost so I'm on my way outta this thread.

See? You call me out for stereotyping people and now you're doing it to me.

Enjoying yourself?

not at all. I know how you feel because long while back - I said hell no I ain't spending $100 for jeans when i can get one for cheap and same for t-shirts. I've been resisting for a long time but when you grow up, you'll understand. You just gotta dress nice when you meet people which means you gotta spend some more. You don't need to replace your whole wardrobe with douchebag clothes. A few sets will do along with a pair of nice shoes. I meet new people/colleagues at work, thru friends, etc. Nothing wrong w/ dressing nice on those occasions.

Nobody wants to hang out with a guy or date a guy who dressed like a bum when one is dressing DECENTLY nice. Nobody is going to hire a bum either. It's not about being superficial or whatsoever. First impression is everything and it shows the maturity in taking care of one's appearance.

Dressing like a bum, not caring about one's hygiene, having messy household/car/hair.... what does it GENERALLY say? :hmm:

I don't dress like a bum at all. I wear polo shirts at work and for social occasions. I rarely wear t-shirts or jeans. I have dress pants.

If you had bothered to ask me what I meant by nice clothes, I would have told you.

I'm not the first one who used the word handicapped in that thread. Why are you complaining to me?

If you re-read, you'll clearly see that jiro123 said the same thing and yet, you complain to me over it?

I did not mean any offense with what I posted.

Saw it first in your post. But if it makes you feel any better....Hey, jiro123, I object to your use of the term, as well.

Doesn't matter who said it first, it is an objectionable way to refer to people. People who use such discriminatory language rarely mean offense. However good intentions do not necessarily yield good results.

I´m here to defend BradB08.

I may disagree with his view over muslim issues, relate to this thread here what respectfully debate with agree to disagree about but I do not judge/mock his choice for Wal-mart. If he is happy with his choice then respect him. Is it not hard? Don´t you know it´s bully to mock his choice taste? Shame you! (You know who I´m referring to).

I do buy cheap clothes sometimes... and also at market, too... It look really good to me... So what?

QUITTING mock everyone´s taste choice.

why? how do you describe a person with wheelchair then? If you find it offensive to call a person with wheelchair as "handicapped person," then... is it offensive to call me or other AD'ers as "deaf/HOH people" ??

I think it's offensive to call a person with wheelchair as "a cripple" but I don't think "a handicapped person" is offensive.

He was mocking people who shop at AE/AF, as well as jiro123 mocking individuals who shop at Prada and Gucci.

Believe it or not, some of us deafies shop at those stores!

oh no I wasn't mocking people who shop at Prada and Gucci. Just merely a stereotypical joke for Brad

It's all good. It's not worth getting upset over and I was in the wrong. My apologies.

I think it's offensive to call a person with wheelchair as "a cripple" but I don't think "a handicapped person" is offensive.

I describe them as a person with a disability. There is a huge difference between a person accepting a disability as part of their existence, and stating that they are disabled, handicapped, or crippled.

And no, describing someone as deaf/hoh is not offensive. Describing them as disabled as the result of that deafness is offensive.

How about we just stop describing people then? Is what our society has become? We're so scared of offending each other, perhaps the best way to avoid that is to stop talking altogether?

Coward! ( oops, was that a description?)
