How about we just stop describing people then? Is what our society has become? We're so scared of offending each other, perhaps the best way to avoid that is to stop talking altogether?

There is nothing wrong with describing people. There is, however, something wrong in using derogatory terminology to describe people. Its not anything new. There has always been something wrong with using derogatory language to describe people. I'm certain there are some terms you would not want used to describe you, as an HoH individual. That should make you a bit more sensitive when it comes to doing it to others.

I describe them as a person with a disability. There is a huge difference between a person accepting a disability as part of their existence, and stating that they are disabled, handicapped, or crippled.

And no, describing someone as deaf/hoh is not offensive. Describing them as disabled as the result of that deafness is offensive.

"a person with a disability"..... that's rather verbose and this prompts unnecessary confusion. but hey - if you wana do that, go ahead. Makes me wonder what you'd call a follower of certain religion and I'm sure it ain't one-word description :laugh2:

I don't see anything wrong with the word "handicap" since it's a word found everywhere including parking sign :dunno:.

What about a person who "has" a handicap as opposed to a "handicapped" person or the person is "handicapped"?

Do you feel the same when it is applied to you? And whether you see anything wrong with it or not, many individuals do see something wrong with it, and some are posters on this board. The word has a very negative connotation.

No, it is not verbose. It is actually more accurate. Simply because one has a disability does not mean that they are disabled. I know many people with various disabilities that have accomplished more than many folks without disabilities. Likewise, I know people with disabilities that are not in the least disabled.

I'm Deaf, not HoH!

/sarcasm

To me, Deaf and HoH mean the same thing. That's just me though.

I don't really like political correctiveness anymore. Sure, there's a few terms I agree with but most of them are just silly.

I do however object to being called disabled and treated like a child by people, who probably think I'm stupid or something.

:)

You understand exactly what I am saying. :ty:

And, my point is that a person with a disability is not necessarily handicapped, nor are they necessarily disabled.

:dizzy: tongue twister!

My point exactly. If such treatment bothers you, then it most likely bothers others as well.

I don't think golfers take offense to having a handicap. I could be wrong though!

Ahh...but saying a golfer has a handicap has quite a different meaning contextually than saying a deaf person is handicapped.

lol, Jiro and Brad seems gonna be best friend on AD, I would wonders if they hang out at wal mart on weekend.

Jillio, I have two handicaps. The ADA classifies both as disabilities.

I consider me pretty much a good productive citizen who is not that bothered by my handicaps that the government classifies as disabilities.

They are just descriptive words. I am not really that bothered by either one.

I wish we had a Target around here. That way, I could be slightly more upscale with my clothing selections.

From some of the above posts, it seems that people are "judging books by their covers."

Maybe ADers aren't so liberal after all.

:hmm:

You are only person who convert us into conservative, now, I'm more conservative because of you, just messing with you.

I'm in middle of them but used to be very liberal during high school in last 2 years ago.
