Newbie here signed up to move to WA State

Washington School for the Deaf is a couple of hours away in Vancouver, right on the border of Portland. It is not near Seattle. There is a private school for the deaf in seattle but it is oral approach (I think).

    Military Signs (ASL)

Giving a presentation about my family tomorrow and need to figure out how to sign that my brother used to be in the Navy. I found a sign for "navy" but not sure if it is the color or the military branch as it doesn't say?? Sign for NAVY | ASL Sign Language Video Dictionary "Army" American...

Meeting Deaf people while out and about

I met a Deaf guy at the store today, in the produce section... I was diggin' though the celery, and all of it was bad...He was putting more produce out, I turn to him and ask him if he has any more celery because it's all bad. He says "I'm deaf", I nod and he starts to take out a note pad but...

Official AllDeaf Switched At Birth Discussion [tv show on abc family]

I finally got a chance to watch the second episode of this show last night. I didn't record the first one but I really liked the second one. As a hearing person who is not familiar with the deaf community I have a few thoughts. One, I feel like the deaf issues portrayed were interesting to a...

    ASL meeting groups

I recently went to an ASL meetup and I do not have a working knowledge of ASL, only half the alphabet and maybe ten signs! At first I felt like a burden but a woman there did help me out a little and taught me colours, drinks and such. When she had to go, another guy there helped me with some...

I have been away from the forum for way too long and didn't get a chance to see this post. I'll place a hold on this book at the library. :)

    GM cows 'producing human milk'

I'm not fond of GMO's. Breastmilk -- from real human mothers -- is (almost always) the best option for babies. We don't need cows to "produce human milk"... we need more women to donate their excess breastmilk :)

I don't know, I'm not fond of extraneous rules in any situation. Shutting off every connection you have to the outside world because you're listening to a lecture is just... it's just plain weird. It's not even about respect. Let's be honest, if a teacher really respected their students they...

School officials should not be the ones to relay personal messages to people, it is not their job or their business. Also, sending a lot of notes throughout the day is just plain impractical. I did have notes sent to me periodically throughout elementary and even middle school -- that was fine...

    What about relatives?

Skype has a video (visual) component, in addition to a phone (audio) component. So, you can communicate through a "video call". HTH.

Sound decision: Boys opt for cochlear implants

It does seem kind of sad that they want to be like their hearing brother, but that also is a normal thing to feel when growing up. Would you feel differently if they wanted a haircut similar to their brother, to wear clothes of a certain brand because their brother wears those, etc.? In other...

Gansler urges ban on app that can alert drunk drivers

People are going to drive drunk, end of story. These people should direct their energy into making it more available for people who are drunk to get other forms of transportation besides driving themselves home :)

At sixteen I did not lack the maturity to fully understand the ramifications of forwarding such content. I also know of at least 100 other people who, at under sixteen, also had the same maturity. I had a cell phone at 14 and I used it for..... texting my friends. And calling my parents if I...

    Newbie

*waves* I live in Washington State and know next-to-no ASL. I am not deaf or HOH. I can fingerspell, say hi and bye, some numbers, and a couple other random signs. I hope to take ASL next Fall through Spring. I do own some books about ASL and I take a crocheting class once a week because the...

That's a bit, um, stretching. Not all people under 16 are going to send sexual-themed text messages or pictures. You might as well say that children under 16 ought not have computers or cameras. The fact is that, however, many people under 16 can use a cell phone without using it for sexual...

How Fat is too Fat/How Thin is too Thin?

I don't know how fat is too fat or how thin is too thin, I'm fond of a happy-medium, for the most part :) I'm not going to say that personality is what counts and that nothing else does... I am simply a human :)
