I am hearing my own voice better after just having switched to P3. I have a feeling that I will need to go back for a new mapping in less than 2 weeks.

I am starting to hear the difference in sounds of different letters. I spoke to my friend and she bought up a good point; that of the 2 nicknames Abel has for me (Lucia and Pookie), that Abel should try calling me by "Pookie" because it has a heavier or stronger sound to it than "Lucia" and I have to say that she does have a good point. "Pookie" does sound stronger because of the "P" in it while "Lucia" is much softer-sounding. She said I'd be more likely to respond to "Pookie" than to "Lucia" or even my own name. I can hear the "b" in my name but it is not as strong as the "P". I still can't automatically tell apart the sounds yet (can't put a name to it unless I SEE what is making the sound). But I did hear someone pound the table behind me...I was able to tell that only because I felt the pounding also and connected it to the sound.

I spoke to my other friend and she thinks that my tone of voice may have changed due to my CI. This is because lately over the last few days since I've been activated, I noticed that when my cats are doing something they aren't supposed to do (such as scratching the carpet), I say "NO!" or "STOP!" and they immediately stop and look at me. Before my CI, they would just ignore me and keep on doing whatever they were doing (even if I was yelling at them to stop it), until I get up and go over to them. Now I don't even have to get up. Nice!

I am already on P3, I switched over last night. I am hearing things much better. I have a feeling I will have to go back to my audiologist for new maps much sooner than planned. I will give my current maps the weekend as I still have 1 more map that I haven't used yet, and if I am on P4 by Monday, I will call the clinic and make an appointment for sometime next week.

Also, I noticed that I am feeling much more confident with my voice and that I am talking much more now. I used to talk a lot before I lost my previous apartment and had to leave St. Cloud. When I went to live on the farm I didn't really have anyone I could practice talking with (I was very self conscious, plus, I didn't really like some of the people that lived on the farm, they are such nasty people!), and I was used to talking only with people I know really well. I was getting speech therapy at Saint Cloud State University for free before I left St. Cloud. When I left St. Cloud, I had to quit speech therapy as the farm I went to live on was over an hour away, and I had no tranportation. I was SO pissed because I was making a lot of progress in speech therapy. I sure missed talking!

cong how things going.. sounds like a beginer and you're doing good.

wow.. i am scheduled to go to st. cloud univeristy in nov for speech therpy.. i'm wondering how they go? i was been on their waiting list for months and months. so now its gonna be my first time next month.

Wow, I didn't have to wait for months. I got in immediately, but I think that's because the dean of my art department put in a good word for me. Good luck with your speech therapy!!!
 
Today when I woke up and put my CI on, everything was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO LOUD!!! I was like WTF, that's weird. I decreased the volume to the lowest, still too loud! Changed back to P2, decreased volume, still too loud! P1, lowest volume, still too loud! I had no idea why, I thought maybe I'm feeling too sensitive today. Then I came in from talking to management about a lost dog, was sweating so I took the CI off while I let my head dry. I looked at the display, and now I know why everything was too loud today!

I must of accidently set my CI to T (telecoil) instead of the M...no wonder!!! Now I switched it back to M and went back to P3...soooooo much better! LOL!
 
Are you rfirmiliar with Carlos Mencia? DEE-DEE-DEE! I'm just playin! At least you figured it out before going to yer audi wondering WTF was going on. If ya did that, you would have felt real goofy!

I have no idea who Carlos Mencia is. LOL! I would have felt really goofy, though! :)

He is one of the funniest comics around. He is completely politically incorrect, makes fun of every race, religion, sex, sexual preferecnce. If you can think of it, its fair game.
 
Just a suggestion that was made to me when I was activated a couple years back... You might want to go to your local library and try borrowing some books on tape. It helps with speech recognization and you'd have the words to follow along with as needed.
 
Today when one of my cats jumped onto the computer desk (I do not like it when the cats jump on the desk, they need to stay off that desk) I said "get down, get off" and Abel said, "wow, I heard you say that clearly"....:D

I can already speak some, but not as clearly as I would like to, so that was a big deal when he said he heard me clearly.

Great! It will only get better.

That was the first thing other people noticed about me too! My speech while quite good...really shaped up after I got my CI.
 
Wow! That's really great! This definitely shows those nay-sayers that getting a CI is well worth it! You go, girl!!!

Great to hear this!

How are you going with the loud sounds and everything? Is it back to being as comfortable as it was before the sounds suddenly got loud for you?

Yes, it is so much more comfortable; I got remapped. I also had the audiologist put the sensitivity feature on all the maps this time, so things are so much better and easier to management. I have to say I really like the sensitivity feature, especially when I am in the poker tournament on Sundays...there are about 100 people in the room and that was just too many voices. I turned the sensitivity down to where I could only hear the people at my table and that helped a lot! Sounds are starting to sound different for me now...guess I am becoming used to the sounds. Not as sharp, not as harsh. :) I go back November 16th for another map.
 
That's great - I'm so pleased that it's settled down a bit for you too.

A bit later when you get the autosensitivity program (different to the sensitivity button) that will give you the ability to cut out irritating continuous background noises. I use it in the car so I can talk to hubby and then also turned it on when I went to the dentist, who had a lot of machines whirring away. I also use it in shopping malls.
