Something to think about re oral only/mainstreaming

have it occur to you that they may in fact be poor including my own parents. We didn't have anything worthy to sell, tvs were thrift store black and white and broken. we didn't have a telephone line or anything like. We were nearly homeless type of poor, in fact except we have a home.

I don't like excuses. So get another job, move to a smaller house, pan handle on the streets for heaven's sake! I would turn tricks in a back alley if it meant that my child had the best opportunity to become the best person she could be. She will never be held back by anything, least of all, money.

our house is unsellible. beside she was saving up so I could get an hearing aid in time for school.

she can't get a job because she have five kids!

You are clearly making excuses. I don't stand for that in my life. I do what it takes, and I will accept nothing less than the best for my child. (In education, opportunities, education, etc. Clearly she doesn't have "the best shoes" or whatever).

btw, tell those things you said to me to all those parents in that news article I just posted. I'm not the only one who making "excuses" but then again do children really need to depend on their parents for communication access?

I said that they are abusive parents. It is unacceptable to require that your child use a language that they can not access. So, if you didn't have a hearing aid, why didn't your mom start signing?

see, that's where I'm trying to point out. If she won't, who will?

I'm sorry, I don't understand this comment. Can you expand or clarify?

That's not important. Some people live in rent and they can't move out because of contract, and it doesn't solve the problem to get a hearing aid right away. These things take time and money, and I needed hearing aids NOW.

But she did save up and I got hearing aids in time for school.

And I am saying that abusive parents should be seen as just that. There is a difference between bad parenting and oralism.

right, and take them away to foster home and that will solve everything.

or maybe we need to stress how important sign language is so they don't get label as abusive.

Lion's club, Medicaid, hospital charities, chuches....again, begging on the street....any way to get it done.

For what? For ASL classes? They were college courses, so they cost a lot, but education is always worth paying for! :D

You answered my question when you mentioned the SSDI. I don't know the rules, laws, etc. since I've never had that, but I know of other parents who have that for their deaf children. Also the other thing I wondered about is VR, but again I don't know the rules, laws, criteria for that. Just wanted to make suggestions in case you weren't aware, but I figured you probably were.

did you go to public school from beginning to end without any deaf program?
As a matter of fact, I did.

Most deaf people I know seem to had AVT or oral school or even self-contained class for the deaf even for a short while. I had none of that. It was literally "slap on a hearing aid (phonic ear FM, actually) and send her to public school"
I didn't have any of that either.

Yes, my daughter does have the right to communication. And you know what? We paid waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy more to learn ASL then we have for her CI.

Same here. And we'll keep paying for the ASL, the CI costs going forward are negligible. Worth it, though.

.the real truth is that most mianstremed teachers don't really bother and most parents usually don't want to admit that their child doesn't fit mainstreaming until it becomes way too late.
AMEN!!!! There are some good dhh regional programs and some kids who may only need minimal accomondations. but overall.......and trust us faire joure and Grendel, getting good Dhh services in the mainstream is HELL. That is a BIG reason why formal dhh ed programs still exist.

Oh, and faire joure, you're missing something. The research isn't saying poor kids can't do as well as wealthier kids. It's pointing out though that wealthier kids do have more advantages both with healthcare (not every doctor accepts Medicaid) and with access to oral education (wealthier kids can move to areas with better oral programs. It is very common for parents to move to an area that offers good oral programs) as well as supplementary stuff like AVT (which may or may not be covered by insurance)

Most , almost all, audiologists and doctors for CI accept medicaid/medicare. The parents probably have trouble going for mapping and such.. The trip may be too far for them (I wish more audiologist do mapping but they say they have stick with ENT that does CI surgeries for safety reasons so they can report any problems) and they may not have the transportation to go. Of course, money should be no excuse.

in my days in the 80's and 90's, I don't think medicaid was available at the time, not even sure they cover hearing aids.
