I am so proud of myself for becoming a junior in my second year of college. Completing my college education earlier than "usual" is my highest aim even before I entered high school!

With this acquistion, I wonder if this dimishes my "reputation" for other people? I have debated this with my husband about certain people's sharp judgments which leads them to jump the gun to assume that an art major like me must be so stupid that one cannot pursue a better major like English Literature. Thus "art majors" are for folks who cannot handle the college. A short-cut to a degree, if you will.

It is hard for me to make my own grounds when people just scoff at the fact I am an art major and hear those "Ooo, you are a junior in your second year? It is easy to just draw sticks and turn it in for an A" when it doesn't make any fawking difference about WHAT majors you are in...

I think the fact that you are in a college and you are completing your degree is good enough. It shows that you have the will and power to success in an academic instituion. For a deaf person, it is more important to have a degree to show that you DO have some brains. A PH.D Deaf is equilvalent to a A.A. degree for a eharing person... it is HARD for deaf people to certify their educational intelligence especially in the hearing world.
And I am not making it any easier for myself, majoring in Art-- "one of your hobbies".

Any experiences, tips, advices are welcome. I would LOVE to hear other people's difficulties with obtaining a college degree because of others' condemners or obstacles established by social norms (you are a deaf student et cetera)

I am hoping to finish the degree in three semesters... [biting her nails] Anybody have that goal as well? To graduate early is a heavy goal especially in colleges because there are SO many loose ties you have to mend before you could even GRADUATE. (Even if I finish all requirements included my major and upper-divison electives for my degree, I still need 17 more units to pass the minimum units to graduate... SO lame)

Don't listen to other people's criticism. They are just jealous.

You achieved your goal, and just blow off all the b.s. that other people are placing on your shoulders!

I majored in Anthropology and I also finished my B.A. in less than the usual 4 to 7 years that many people in my major would have (or is it the students at UCSB?), and I'm proud of that achievement. It doesn't matter what you're majoring in, I also happen to know that Art is difficult at times, requires a lot of creativity, so I really think you're putting it to good use. People should just shut up and appreciate it.

WTG! Don't let the naysayers stop you from completing your education.

I just got my Assoc. Degree in ASL after 19 semesters (10 years!!). Other students would roll their eyes or ask 'why so long?' when I told them that. I was 35 when I went back to school, so I had to take several remedial/basic courses for math and English, plus I worked 30 hrs/wk average on eve/night shifts the whole time. I didn't let any of this stop me from finishing. If a tired old sailor can do it, so can you. :)
 
YAY for all of you! Gnarly, maybe some day we can meet...your story sounds fascinating. We are in the Riverside area.....

I had my own obstacles in university of 'medicine' as well. Some of these narrow-minded hearies thought that deaf people are dumb but my grades & debates proved them wrong again and again. I got the report a week ago and I am on top ten list in university based on score and grade. During final exams week I found out that I don't have to take four of five final exams because of my grades while these narrow-minded people had to take the final exams. When I found out, I walked out of the class while gave these hearies a fat thumbup gesture with a wink.

On first day I got into the classes at that university where I enrolled at... few teachers-professors made an announcement and praised about me that deafie can do what hearies can do (speaking of being a doctor). These comments are quite inspirational. I worked so hard to prove them that they are right. Even though I am still struggling with my english but my researching and debating skill is nearly flawless (well that's what they said). That's one of obstacles in my path.

There are few more than that but I am not liberty to share my downtimes/obstacles with the public... Gnarly, I can share mine with you thru IM if you still want to know.

Edit: It is old but here's my advice: Study hard. Work hard. That's only way to prove them wrong or make them feel lousy/stupid about themselves. Let their stupidities pull themselves down.

Wow, sounds good.

Could you explain the specifics of your major? How many credits total? When did you start college? How many credits do you have now? How many do you have left? Etc?

Not sure if this is intended to poke fun at me and the fact that I posted a thread "all-about-me" by sarcastically posting questions as if you are interesting...

Well if you are really that interesting--
My major-- Printmaking/Painting-- is a major that does paint and printmake. :lol: I am more into printmaking-- I get to crave out an relif image from a woodblock, scratch my image into a copper plate or put my metal plate in an acid bath and have my image coming out by using tar grounds... yeah, all those hazardous fumes to breath in. Printmaking is the "ancient art" compared to graphic design. Your hands get D-I-R-T-Y. The printmaking is not big enough to be called a major so painting got stuck onto the degree. Painting is not one of my favorite hobbies-- why? The patience to have the oil paints dried.
One example is good to understand printmaking-- you know the famous engraving picture called "The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse"? THAT picture uses the method of scratching into metal plate... a more appropriately term is "drypoint".

The credits' total for a degree with this major is 120 units/credits minimum.
I started college in Fall 2003... as of now I have 75 credits (included this semester) and 45 credits to go until I graduate. (24 for my major, 9 for upperdivison electives *to broad my knowledge in three areas of cultural, sciences, ...something else*, and 12 ELECTIVES THAT WILL JUST WASTE TAXPAYERS' MONEY AND MY TIME)

The ideal plan is to take 15 credits a semester which averages 5 classes, thus 30 credits will account for a year (two semesters a year)... and adds another semester of 15 credits totals up to 45. So only three semesters to go--

unless I take on 21 credits in one semester or whatnot... I have a bad habit of taking on TOO MUCH classes. I am regretting to not take more classes this semester. :-X I don't know, I think something in me feels the yen to have the PRESSURES. I want to pull my hairs out more often or something... Surprisedly I dont have any S&M fetish. :lol:

The funny thing, at least I think, is that when my degree paper is handed to me, it will say in bold and centered: "Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts with an Emphasis in Printmaking and Painting".... whew. Alotta words for a small rectangle piece of paper. I am not even considering to take on a minor because then they will have to give me another piece of paper!!!! :lol2:

Pictures of Different method:

The printing press we gotta crank to have our images printed... beware, it is LOUD.

Hm... I oughta scan some of my artworks to show (off?)

You're lucky to only be taking 120 credits. My major is over 180 credits! :eek:
