Florida Woman Killed by Pit Bulls

CITRA, Fla. (AP) - Seven pit bulls escaped from their owner's home and mauled an 82-year-old neighbor to death Friday.

Alice Broom died at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, officials told the Ocala Star-Banner for its Saturday editions.

Broom was found by the dogs' owner, Robert Freeman, 67. He said the dogs were attacking the woman when he arrived, and speculated that the attack had gone on for at least 10 minutes.

The dogs were seized by county animal control officials. Freeman, who was not immediately charged with a crime, said he told county officers to destroy the dogs.

Broom's daughter Mary Alice Smothers said Freeman's neighbors had called animal control officials several times in recent months about the dogs, who had been involved in at least two other biting incidents.

``I can't blame (Freeman). I blame animal control,'' Smothers told the Star-Banner.

Marion County sheriff's officials said Friday night that an investigation is continuing.

Citra is north of Ocala and about 80 miles northwest of Orlando.

Whoa! They should pass a law against these kind of animals. It seems as if the most common attacks are by these dogs!

yes and lack of taking care of pitbulls can cause problem too... if the owner wants their putbill dog to be taken care properly they should make sure the dog was trained properly for obiences and everything.. I have had adopted my pitbull thru MSPCA... never again.. she was only 11 mos old when we got her.. we didn't know her previous history.. but she got into a dog fight.. we couldn't break the fight and I ran to get my bro in law to help me but too late... the dog was Paralazyed from midback to backleg. my daughter walked her to the car I took her to the vet.. found out too much things to do with the dog so we put her to sleep. then few days later I found out that if we didn't put our dog to sleep she would have been force to put to sleep for ripping other dog's skin under throat due the dog was not able to protect herself but again sametime I knew my town DOES NOT like pitbulls (found out thru few people who knew this dog officer Arghh)..... soo... we decide not to get any more 'adoption' pets for a while.. since I am a dog lover!

Dobermans also can be trained properly too if trained correct they wouldn't attack either.. many people think any mean dogs are always mean dogs It is not only the dog's fault but Owner fault for not training enough, not giving attention enough to the pets as well too! like this 7 dogs ? that's too much and he wasn't home when the attack happen he got home and found dog attacking this lady for 10 min ? that's crazy He should have done something better than standing around and wait for officer to arrive....

Broom's daughter is right on few thing.. if these dog had 2 biting in previous... then they should have done something better. but having 7 dogs together at same property isn't great idea with one owner (maybe more than 1 owner)... But I am glad that the owner told officer to destory these dogs.. which is a good suggest because.. once a dog bit will always bite again like them...

such a sad for this 82 yrs old lady to die this way.... :(

Wendy

P.S. I still remember my dog Diva.. I only had her for 1 year that's it! :(

Humane Society have restriction on pit bulls... if they're aggressive, they will be put down immediately,... and they have heavy screening on the potential owners... they don't want pit bulls to become guard dogs or anything that could lead to their aggressive nature.

They should pass a law or something to restrict certain dogs to certain places due to their nature of aggressiveness. I know that rotwielers, dobermans, and pit bulls definitely fit this list. Grr! *bites*

Yes Vam...

And a good dog owner who have knowledge with proper training as well and Nowdays homeowner insurance REFUSE to cover the cost of any "specifics breeds"... The only way you could get covered is by having 2nd homeinsurance for pets.. My dog We had to pay extra 300. a year ( I think ) for Jake our dog.. cuz He is a Mutt --- 3 breeds LOL wanna know ??

Rottweiler, Pitbull and Black Lab.. he is such a sweetie Dog (still a puppy).. We trained him great.. He doesn't like to be aggresive either.. when other dog growl/warn him etc.. Jake just whimper and roll over " But I wanna play " that's his attitude ... We actually had to laugh when He act like that....

Anyway....... Like I said dog do know when to be aggresive if the people act "fears" also! cuz they know they can be dominated! I have grew up with all kinds of dobermans since 1982 till 2000 when I put Virgil to sleep due of having bone tumor in his leg and he wasn't himself starving himself, laying out in the sun view (heat) etc soo I didn't want to make him anymore suffer.. let him go peace. then we got diva (pure staffordshire dog) and Jake --- We got Jake when he was 6 weeks old! Jake also knew Sean isn't feeling great too.

Ciao,
Wendy

yo, pitbulls are getting a bad rap.... its a given fact that small dogs do bite people more than the pitbulls.. but its not reported :squint: at those little dogs

I dont care about the pitbull breed, i just like other breeds better

That may be true, but it's difficult to imagine a person being killed by a pack of attacking poodles.

Awww.. That is soo Horriable how the pit bulls did that to that woman... I cant image how she felt during the attacked... That much a terriable thing that happened. I have seen some animals attacked shows on tv.. and saw how people getting biten real bad... and end up in the hospital and some dead... that is soo horriable . My heart aches when that happens...:(

:werd: Animal attacks are common in Florida. First sharks, then alligators, and now pit bulls!

Hmph, i agreed- pitbulls are getting bad rap.

Every animal bites... even a CAT [squinting her eyes at her cat]
the only reason we are hearing more of pitbulls because they tend to attack in groups (like that lady in San Francisco) and these pitbulls were only doing this because they are naturally defenders of their terrority.. if they were out of their boundaries (such as the yard and so on) then it is the owner's fault....

I always feel bad that those pitbulls who bite once end up being put to sleep... ~___~ They just need a sweet owner who can reverse their training... They only need to learn that their aggressiveness is not good and discipline to a point where they can show their affections rather than attacking the preys to prove their faithfulness to the owner.

i think i understand what you meant that
this would depend on the trainer/master
whoever "encouraged" his pit bull dog to be
aggressive then this dog will be more aggressive
ONLY if NOT happy with its owner
and/or environment whatever.

I'm surprised to hear these pit bull dogs attacked
that old lady because I learned from the past
that these dogs tend to attack other dogs
(INSTEAD of human beings)... so I wonder
why did these dogs attack that old lady ???????????

That's because these dogs were "protecting" their terrority... even protecting their owner's property!!! So. the lady "could be walking by" ? who know we will have to wait and see what the newspapers says more about it.. :(

Diva did the same with my children she was protecting Sean and Kayla when we were at the field of cranberry bog.. she wouldn't let any " Loud machines or vehicle go near her or her owners "

These types of dogs included rottweiler, dobermans, german sheppard, Pitbulls, Other breeds do that too!

Holy Moley -- sure isn't good hearing about pitbulls being given a bad rap. It's really the owners' fault for either not providing enough training or purposely train them to attack and be aggressive.

Sure hope there'll be more tougher laws imposed to prevent any further incidents of pitbull attacks. Australia's experiencing a spate of pitbull attacks here as well.

I never liked "Pit Bulls" Sorry..
Too much scary..

My dog is nearly almost attacked by Pit Bull. I was so maddddddddd at the owner.. why you didn't trained properly ways hold your fuk'n damnit dog.? Owner said.. oh well, That your fault. I said "FUCK OFF", your dog extremelly dangerous and tried to bite my precouisly bulldog. Owner said, oh well sorry and mad at me, Why you kick my dog? I said.. YEAH, FUCKING WHY NOT, HAVE TO RIGHTS PROTECTION MY DAMNIT DOG AND CHILDREN ARE HERE. Don't you see enough your eyes aren't blind ?? Owner said.. oh sorry then left. *rolls my eyes up*

Yep, I remmy my cats brought dead mice to the front door to show faithfulness. My mother puked at the sight of the dead mice. Few of them were headless.
 But we liked them because that was good.

Wow. What does he look like. Can you post your pic of your dog here? My dog (when I was younger) was a mixed Black Lab but he was short... 2 feet tall. Had white chest, white feet, and white pointy tail. He lived to ripe old age of 14.

yayaya it worked

Opps.. Edit again because I forgot to mention about this picture LOL.. Jake was "tired" and refused to lay down in back of truck on the way home from NH Camping.. soo My daughter gave Jake a bunny ears behind his head LOL so you can see Jake was "half asleep" sitting up with both front paws hanging over the seat it was soooo FUNNY and CUTE lol.... so Here it is...

why did these dogs attack that old lady ???????????

perhaps they were starved?
perhaps they were sick of her nagging?
perhaps they sensed a weakling?
perhaps they were fed live kittens?
perhaps the taste of blood?
