What was your first automobile?

In reading all these posts, it amazes me how many young people can afford so many nice cars. It took me a long time just to save the money I needed to buy my first car at age 22.

There is nothing wrong with used cars. They are a much wiser purchase. We have decided to never buy new cars. You lose too much value in the first two years of purchase of a new car. Also, in SC, we have to pay personal property tax on vehicles. The tax cost is reduced for each year that the car gets older. So a new car tax is way too much to pay. A two-year-old car is a much better deal. Too much depreciation on new cars. I bought my 2000 SUV in 2002. We take good care of our vehicles and people don't believe how old they are.

deafclimber, a hint....I am 61 yrs old now....back then, no they weren't valued as classics but now, yes.....lol

:barf: 400 a year for the tags..... good thing I live in Tennessee since I only pay $25 a year for the tags no matter how expensive the car is.

My first car..... when I was 16, I paid $400 for a 1975 Ford Mustang II Hatchback w/302-V8 and Automatic (because of the fuel crunch, engine was so weak from new emissions stuff). It was pretty rusty, but was white over dark maroon red paint with chrome trim and same dark red interior. I beat the heck out of that car, I think it lasted a year and a half..... but it was fun to go offroading in.

I think I can find a picture of it somewhere.... if I do, I'll edit post.
:wiggle:

My first 'car' was a motorcycle that I road year round, even when it was a wopping 5 degrees out.

Later modified so it looked a little more like this:

I rode that thing for a few years, then sold it off to a guy that had big plans for it. Came out in the end looking a little like:

We pay the personal property tax (based on value) first, and then also pay for tags (flat fee). Two separate costs.

When I was 16, I had to share a 1992 Mazda 626 with my mom and sister (15 yo). I hated sharing a car with my sister cuz she always gone when I needed it so sometimes I had to drive dad's 1988 Chevy Silverado lol. My parents finally got me a new car for my graduation. It was a 2000 Toyota Camry. I love that car and still have it today. My sis had to keep driving the 626 til her graduation and she got a 2001 Alero (Oldsmobile?). Shortly after that, mom sold the 626 and got her a 1996 or 1997 Honda Accord. And last year dad finally sold the 1988 Silverado and and got him a 1996 Silverado. My brother will probably get a 2005 Silverado or Z71 for his graduation this May. After they pay that truck off, they might finally get themselves a new car than used ones lol.

I hope my camry will last for years to come. I don't know what I would get if this one ever breaks down or wrecks (knock on wood). I never really had a dream car. I didn't expect my car for graduation. It came a few months before graduation and didn't know it was coming, so I had no choice what kind of car I wanted, but I am totally happy with this one. I would probably get another Camry or a Honda Accord.

When I lived in Virginia, it was like that....they also had a bunch of other fees. These were paid each year. I was never a believer that tax should be paid each year but thats just me :(

I'm glad to be back in Maryland where you pay a one time sales tax upon purchase (payable at the MVA when you get your tags) and then you pay for the tags themselves. You then renew the tags every year or two years, whichever you prefer.

I've noticed a lot of fees in MD changing though. I have a regular car license (class C) and a Motorcycle license (Class M). When I moved back to Maryland from Virginia, I was charged for each class...which made the cost kind of steep LOL.

Does anyone remember these Volkswagon Rabbits - popular in early 1980's? That was what I had for my first car. It was awesome but I had to share it with my younger sister and we fought so much over who gets to use the car as we both had our own friends and different social lives. I remember one time, we were fighting so hard in the car that I drove through red light. Other cars braked so hard that they swerved to avoid me. My sister and I paused for a moment but then we continue fighting. LOL

My mom finally got sick of hearing us fighting so I got another car later on. ;)

My first car was

a 1977 Chevy Camaro. Paid $150 for it in 1987. The car was a rusted out shit box. It ran everyday. I slowly started working on it. By the the time I was done it became a nasty hot rod with a 454 motor with blower... Totaled the car on 6/15 1994. Went head on thru 2 sections of a guard rail then into a tree. The car was historty. Ripped to pieces. I walked away with out a scratch :thumb:

HELL YEAH!!! BAD ASS Jap Chopper

my first car was the 1983 Honda Civic wagon, metallic blue with 5 speed stick shift, it was a reliable transportation and was easy on gas. It had 214,583 miles, exactly when I crashed the car and totalled it. I had it for less than a year, I think.
