Don't you realize that TV has been and still is a good source of media in teaching people what can happen in certain situations? Live or "created to show as close as possible". Say we are watching "Deep Impact". This is a movie made for entertainment, However, we can get a good look at what could possibly happen should an asteroid or comet strikes our planet? That's why Jiro makes excellent points here. One can only try to be as prepared as possible. Our government has a responsiblity to have the infrastructure and commodities we need in place BUT there are times that the gov't cannot help every single person.......hence preparedness is the key word here. We have the freedom to live as we like, but not if other people or entities like a communist government interferes with our freedom.

Preparing yourself for the reality of a natural disaster that will occur is quite different from preparing oneself for a disaster that is a fictional portrayal that has never occurred in the past, nor is it probable. I fully agree that people should prepare themselves for an impending disaster that is absolutely going to occur, or one that is likely to occur. I just don't thinkt hat preparing oneself for doomsday based on a fictional television program meant for entertainment purposes only is logical or healthy.

In general, Y2K wouldn't had been much of an issue. However, when it came to the utilities, it was a different story. They neglected to keep the utilities up to date, they were warned for years to upgrade the computer system. Of course, they waited and waited until shortly before Y2K was months away. This would had caused a huge mess. All of people's bills would be affected, and the system may had been affected if they didn't upgrade their computers.

Of course, they had to spend quite a bit of money to get it done before it was too late. It was something they should had done long before Y2K. Besides, I wasn't worried about Y2K at all. I know some people were, but there's always going to be people who will get panicky over silly things.

Y2K was blown out of proportion big time.

Have you tried to get an employer to provide a terp for an interview lately? The Supreme Court, as appointed by one Mr. Bush, has seriously restricted the rights of the disabled under the interpretation of the ADA.

I haven't seen that happen in my location. Most of the employers and potential employers here bend over backwards to provide terps for employees and job seekers.

How has the Supreme Court prevented job interviewees from getting terp services?

BTW, President Bush did NOT appoint the Supreme Court. Presidents can only nominate individual justices, and those have to be confirmed by the Senate.

So far I am forced to pay for interpreter fee at closing when title office need the communication with client. One did threat that ADA does not apply to title office and it allow written conversation at closing. SMACK to my FOREHEAD! Who want to do written note conversation for 2 hours signatures on mortgage forms?!?!?!?!?!?

Closing with interpreter is about 2 hours but with written note if Deaf ask a lot quesitons, it will take 4-5 hours to really feel comfortable. But many deaf will nod off and accept it. Perfect score for title office and banker to take advantage of deaf not able to stand up and demand for interpreter and not to pay for it.

This is where deaf fall for hidden fees. Often they will transfer the fee to deaf client on interpreter fee at Mortgage closing so title office will not pay for it. PATHETIC!

We'd used to have the "freedom" or the "right" to segregation. We don't now.

You're right - We used to have the rights to segregation. Although, IMO, I don't really think that is a freedom itself because blacks and whites were segregated. If it was the freedom itself, blacks and whites would have been not been segregated way before all the civil rights incident in the 60's.

You are not alowed to hit kids here either. My dad is an ex school teacher who is in favor of corpral punishment. He said you didn't really have to use it too often but the fact that could be a possiblility. It tended to act as a deterant.

Anyway I've not even set foot on USA soil so how am I to know. I only wish Nanny state Europe would back off a little with their over rigerous health and safety acts.

I'd like the rights to steraliation on demand. I can kill a baby on demand but I can't stop myself from having one in the first place.

The rights to Donate blood/organs even though I am Deafblind and have petit mal epilesy. None of my disabilities affect the quality of my blood so why should it matter if I had a seizure afterwards.
I want to give something back to show everyone that us disabled have a use after all. But they don't even want my blood.

The rights to climb ladders. When I was at Uni the first year there was loads of space on top shelves. You just needed a ladder to get there. Then the 2nd year they removed all the top shelvings because of new health and safety regulation which caused severe shortage of space.

Everything I spend in business are tax write off... This is some way a myth. You may write off but you still lost certain % of the money to tax anyway. It would be nice to have extra $400 in my bank, not toward to taxes write off.
