What freedoms did we used to have in the U.S.A that we don't have now?

Don't you realize that TV has been and still is a good source of media in teaching people what can happen in certain situations? Live or "created to show as close as possible". Say we are watching "Deep Impact". This is a movie made for entertainment, However, we can get a good look at what could possibly happen should an asteroid or comet strikes our planet? That's why Jiro makes excellent points here. One can only try to be as prepared as possible. Our government has a responsiblity to have the infrastructure and commodities we need in place BUT there are times that the gov't cannot help every single person.......hence preparedness is the key word here. My .02

We have the freedom to live as we like, but not if other people or entities like a communist government interferes with our freedom.

Of course TV is a useful media when it is portraying fact, not fiction. The news is based on fact. Entertainment is a figment of someone's imagination. Don't you realize that? Shall we all prepare Y2K again? That bit of fiction had numerous holes in it, and had people scurrying around like squirrels and acting like idiots. One freedom I still have is to disregard that which is absurd.

Preparing yourself for the reality of a natural disaster that will occur is quite different from preparing oneself for a disaster that is a fictional portrayal that has never occurred in the past, nor is it probable. I fully agree that people should prepare themselves for an impending disaster that is absolutely going to occur, or one that is likely to occur. I just don't thinkt hat preparing oneself for doomsday based on a fictional television program meant for entertainment purposes only is logical or healthy.

In general, Y2K wouldn't had been much of an issue. However, when it came to the utilities, it was a different story. They neglected to keep the utilities up to date, they were warned for years to upgrade the computer system. Of course, they waited and waited until shortly before Y2K was months away. This would had caused a huge mess. All of people's bills would be affected, and the system may had been affected if they didn't upgrade their computers.

Of course, they had to spend quite a bit of money to get it done before it was too late. It was something they should had done long before Y2K. Besides, I wasn't worried about Y2K at all. I know some people were, but there's always going to be people who will get panicky over silly things.

Y2K was blown out of proportion big time.

Y2K disaster could have happen if nobody was paying attention. At least someone did catch the mistake and took action. Y2K required preparation to go through and prevent. if we neglect the preparation, then we slip back to disaster crisis again.

The problem is, they were warned about it for YEARS and YEARS... way back to the 80s. Yet nobody did anything. So it ended up costing the world $800 billion. Of course, a large amount of these were spent on grains and flashlights, no need for that.

I still have resources for the Y2K situation.

It won't be called Y2K, it'll be called world domination.

That tells me that people become lazy. Not listen to warning for years then panic in last minute.

Means we need to be more prepared to more warning in future. I don't mean arm ourselves into militias but at least mentally prepare for the situation.

and also to be trained for it. Yes shit happens at very last minute. Just look at Katrina and Houston. They were screwed. very screwed. They were very ill-prepared and ill-equipped for it. Why? Because they relied too much on government. Sad fact is - yes the government, FEMA, and National Guards do their best but don't count on them. There ain't no 911 at your disposal. You're on your own until you're found.

Government helps out but it is your responsible as a citizen to do your job.

That reason I am not so keen on welfare because it create us to become more dependent on Government then when hell break loose, we will hooked under Government control.

If we continue to live freely by being independent and can support ourselve, then we can really prepare for anything. Training or anything.

So Kudo to Jiro for pointing it out.

Free money, who can say no to that.

Have you tried to get an employer to provide a terp for an interview lately? The Supreme Court, as appointed by one Mr. Bush, has seriously restricted the rights of the disabled under the interpretation of the ADA.
I haven't seen that happen in my location. Most of the employers and potential employers here bend over backwards to provide terps for employees and job seekers.

How has the Supreme Court prevented job interviewees from getting terp services?

BTW, President Bush did NOT appoint the Supreme Court. Presidents can only nominate individual justices, and those have to be confirmed by the Senate.

When the Supreme Court's dissertations on ADA start off with the claim that there is no evidence at all that the Deaf were discriminated pre-ADA - something's wrong.

I have evidence! I am going through issues of ADA and Interpreter for my mortgage closing.

So far I am forced to pay for interpreter fee at closing when title office need the communication with client. One did threat that ADA does not apply to title office and it allow written conversation at closing. SMACK to my FOREHEAD! Who want to do written note conversation for 2 hours signatures on mortgage forms?!?!?!?!?!?

Closing with interpreter is about 2 hours but with written note if Deaf ask a lot quesitons, it will take 4-5 hours to really feel comfortable. But many deaf will nod off and accept it. Perfect score for title office and banker to take advantage of deaf not able to stand up and demand for interpreter and not to pay for it.

This is where deaf fall for hidden fees. Often they will transfer the fee to deaf client on interpreter fee at Mortgage closing so title office will not pay for it. PATHETIC!

Where the deaf rights upon the communication accessible at closing of Mortgage loan. A HUGE impact on their financial needs. This really piss me off...

FYI - in last 3 months, I end up paying over $400 worth of interpreter fee out of my pocket so client do not be responsible to pay for interpreter just because title wanted to hide the fee. We caught many of them but few will slap it on my bill instead of their own.

ADA not strong enough for this situation. I wish I could sit down with either Obama or McCain about this.

The question is: "What freedoms did we used to have in the U.S.A. that we don't have now?"

We'd used to have the "freedom" or the "right" to segregation. We don't now.

You're right - We used to have the rights to segregation. Although, IMO, I don't really think that is a freedom itself because blacks and whites were segregated. If it was the freedom itself, blacks and whites would have been not been segregated way before all the civil rights incident in the 60's.

1. Take it to Small Claims court and argue it there.

OR

2. Use it as a tax-write off.

You people whinning about lack of freedom in USA. Try living in Europe.

You are not alowed to hit kids here either. My dad is an ex school teacher who is in favor of corpral punishment. He said you didn't really have to use it too often but the fact that could be a possiblility. It tended to act as a deterant.

Anyway I've not even set foot on USA soil so how am I to know. I only wish Nanny state Europe would back off a little with their over rigerous health and safety acts.

I'd like the rights to steraliation on demand. I can kill a baby on demand but I can't stop myself from having one in the first place.

The rights to Donate blood/organs even though I am Deafblind and have petit mal epilesy. None of my disabilities affect the quality of my blood so why should it matter if I had a seizure afterwards.
I want to give something back to show everyone that us disabled have a use after all. But they don't even want my blood.

The rights to climb ladders. When I was at Uni the first year there was loads of space on top shelves. You just needed a ladder to get there. Then the 2nd year they removed all the top shelvings because of new health and safety regulation which caused severe shortage of space.

1. Take it to Small Claims court and argue it there. Too far for me to settle in small claim court, I doubt I will make any difference in small claims. Several states across USA such as Michigan and Virginia to name a few. I am in Minnesota.

Everything I spend in business are tax write off... This is some way a myth. You may write off but you still lost certain % of the money to tax anyway. It would be nice to have extra $400 in my bank, not toward to taxes write off.

comment in red.

difference is... Europe is mostly socialist. we are not and we have those rights and it's being eroded away.

After Ike, Texans take heart in simple things

Story Highlights
- Woman spends 2½ hours on short trip to supermarket
- Some wait 12 hours for gas and come away empty
- Power and "Monday Night Football" bring neighbors together
- Cool temperatures help make life bearable

Excerpts
"The relatives are using a generator to boil water for drinking and hygiene needs, she said, "but the scary part is finding fuel for the generator."

Just getting fuel in the Houston area can be an all-day ordeal. Tony Garcia said his niece, a high school senior, waited 12 hours in a gas line on Monday -- 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. -- only to be told a tanker wouldn't be coming that day to supply the station. And with Chambers County knocked off the electrical grid, no fuel means the generator won't be running. So no hot meals and not even boiled water for drinking.

"It just shows how vulnerable we are," Araceli Garcia said.

"Many people don't even have the basic needs," McEndree said.

Tony Garcia said he's worried the search for those needs could mean trouble the longer power and water remain out. He saw people he didn't recognize filling water tanks from his neighbors' outdoor hoses. And he was suspicious they did it without permission.

"That was a bad sign," he said.

smells like Jericho, yes? I guess it's not fiction after all... :cool2:
