We need the Draft reinstated!

I wouldn't agree to there being a draft until they make it so that both men AND women are required to serve. But I don't think the administration is ready to see girls dying in combat yet, so that won't be happening any time soon.

As far as I'm concerned, if they're going to want a draft, they'd better implement gender equality into the military.

Yeah. This is 2006. Did you miss 60 years of history? Ever heard of a war called Vietnam?

The baby boomers are getting older and Generations X and Y both strongly oppose the idea of a draft. If the draft were reinstituted in this Congress, the Dems would have supermajorities in both houses in November.

"Girls" have been dying, horribly wounded, and even prisoners of war, in Afghanistan and Iraq. Military women have been volunteering and serving in harm's way during this war.

Military women are near and dear to my heart since I'm a military retiree (24 years total) myself. I volunteered during the Vietnam war (an "unpopular" time for the military), and served in a very "unequal" military. We've come a long way since then.

However, I do NOT support drafting women. That has been my position since the early 1970's, when I wrote my first paper on that topic.

As far as I'm concerned, if they're going to want a draft, they'd better implement gender equality into the military.

The "business" of the military is NOT equal opportunity employment.

And yet, they're still not actually allowed into combat, there's a great number of special organisations (Delta Force? The Rangers?) that they're prohibited from serving in, and there's a glass ceiling placed on rank.

Then don't support drafting men either. It's that simple.

The U.S. Military is in the business of killing people who are very bad people. I agree with Reba and we do not need women on the frontlines getting themselves killed. War has no mercy on women and very few women can withstand the rigors of combat. I think women should be with the Red Cross helping soldiers and civilians and if the women have to defend their lives and that of their patients in charge then so be it. War belongs to men and this has been a proven fact. War is for men only. Can a woman withstand 2 or 3 days of non-stop combat and running so much and see horrible trauma inflicted on the bad guys and not be feeling one bit sorry about killing the bad guys as well as get involved in a very personal knife fight or pure hand to hand combat fights to the death and for 3 days run under 120 degrees sun, go up and down buildings and everywhere ? Fight at night in total darkness where murderers are ready to fight at will. I don't think so. Women's body, mind and her soul are not made that way plus her spirit would not withstand that. War belongs to men and it is what men do best being a war soldier. Women take care of people and that is what women do best being a nurse.

So? What's your point? The military wasn't created to provide jobs for people. People are assigned as what best meets the needs of the mission, not the individual. That's the nature of military service.

I prefer a voluntary military, and so far, a draft hasn't been needed.

A man can't do that unless he's been properly trained and prepared for it. Women are the same.

Men get shellshock and PTSD too. Gender has nothing to do with it.

People are assigned as what best meets the needs of the mission, not the individual. That's the nature of military service.

Tests have shown women are much more resistant to higher G-force levels than men. By your logic, we should fire all male Air Force pilots and replace them with women.
