Transgender student makes history on prom night

I'm still shocked, because tolerant is not the same thing as embracing and looking up to. You may tollerate a guy who's got a sex change, but chances are you wouldn't want to have steamy sex with him, or call him your prom queen?

Are you saying she shouldn't have been prom queen?

I think this is great. It's about time communities started embracing that which makes us unique.

Some people may not agree with his way of life, but are tolerant of it instead of judging. They're more open to others differences, understanding and even compassion. That's what tolerance is. Tolerance is way way way better than anger and hatred. I don't know why we would have to embrace people who are different? Worship them? What are you trying to say?

Ps. Sex is constantly on your mind, eh?

Something similar is happening to a woman I know. She is Indian and pre-med and bam, she gets pregnant by a white guy. The family does not know yet, but the girl is so convinced that the family will disown her. It is also possible that they may try to make her have an abortion. "Abort or we will disown you". We will see..... I am hoping it works out for them.

Wow- how very sad. If your friend wants this baby, I hope she will stand up for herself. My family wasn't super supportive when I was pregnant with my first child. A few of them even brought up abortion. Now that they have this wonderful person in their lives, I'm sure they regret even bringing it up.

Right. I do not like the word "tolerance" of others. I prefer "acceptance". One uses tolerance when there are ants at the picnic. One accepts other human beings. The very word tolerance implies a lack of acceptance.

I do prefer the word, acceptance, as well. Tolerance can also be defined that way, depending on how you look at it.

You know, as a whole, the African American culture is not very accepting of homosexuality or transgender. My hypothesis is that they don't want their children to experience that double whammy, not so much that they are disapproving in general.

Yeah, I love it that the parents were so supportive.

I know. I remember in Charlotte NC, a hearing African American spoke out against homosexuality for religious reasons and I have heard from transgendered African Americans that many in their community are not very accepting of them of their transgender status. I believe Alice Walker has commented on that in one of her works many years ago re homosexality and bisexaulity.

This may seem slightly off topic, but I remember that during my MSSD days being called gay or lesiban was the worst insult you could lobby at a person.

No, that isn't what the poster is saying at all. He/she is saying that tolerance is superficial and, in practice, non-accepting. It is acceptance that needs to be practiced, not tolerance.

I think it's really cool that everyone were accepting of this prom queen - including the family.

Yes, Alice Walker did address the issue. BTW: I love her works. Very thought provoking.

Yup. :). But that isn't really relevant.

Why, yes it is, if you are going to speak re: what they believe as a cultural group.

So, you have African American friends to your home on a very frequent basis, and discuss issues such as cultural differences and white priviledge and Afirmative Action with them? Interesting.

He's a man, what do you expect? :giggle:

I'm sorry- I didn't realize you and that poster shared a brain.

Post deleted. Nevermind. No interest in these petty, childish games. I can't believe some people around here are actually parents given the level of maturity they exhibit.

Why do you feel the need to answer for other people? I wasn't the only one who was not clear on the posters intent.
