Transgender student makes history on prom night

I am kind of surprised that is a new milestone. I thought we were already more tolerant than that. Especially young people.

As a society as a whole, shamefully no. While I think the younger generation is more accepting, I'm sure that it took some doing to get the school administration to back something like this.
 
I thought it was sweet that the parents were proud of him.

Also, I agree that the younger generation is more accepting, but there is still a lot of work yet to be done..

Especially in the Hispanic culture! Hell, they are CURRENTLY trying to be accepting of interracial marriages!!!! I'm like "wow, you're behind by 50 years..."

You know, as a whole, the African American culture is not very accepting of homosexuality or transgender. My hypothesis is that they don't want their children to experience that double whammy, not so much that they are disapproving in general.

Yeah, I love it that the parents were so supportive.

This reminds me... My best friend is marrying an Indian. Think Shaadi? And his family certainly does not approve because my best friend is a white woman. They wanted him to marry a "nice Indian girl." His family threatened to disown him when they get married. They're not invited to the wedding, well they are, but it's highly doubtable they'd come because it's a controversy between his and her families right now. My best friend's family is angry with his family for not being accepting of interracial marriages. IMO, the couple is perfect for each other, no matter what color or religion.

So, we're still fighting this kind of thing nowadays. I agree, the younger generation is more accepting and tolerant of others differences. It's the family issues and older generations that make everything an obstacle for us. I'm glad the Prom Queen in this article made a wonderful milestone.

My dad, an Irishman through and through, married a bi-racial (1/2 Jewish; 1/2 African American) woman in the 40's. Imagine the stir that caused!:lol:

Wait 'til the grandchildren come along. It's amazing how many parents who think their offspring picked the wrong mate absolutely fall in love with the grandkids.

Hope your friend and the husband can stay calm and patient and don't burn any bridges with the parents. Time sometimes can work its magic.

Yup, time will heal everything. My friend loves his family regardless of their beliefs and there have been times when she cried to me about them judging her, but she knows that they'll get over it at some point because his family adores her. (Complicated, right?) We're all crossing our fingers that somehow the issues will dissolve before the wedding this September. So we can all enjoy the celebration together in harmony.
 
I'm still shocked, because tolerant is not the same thing as embracing and looking up to. You may tollerate a guy who's got a sex change, but chances are you wouldn't want to have steamy sex with him, or call him your prom queen?

Right. I do not like the word "tolerance" of others. I prefer "acceptance". One uses tolerance when there are ants at the picnic. One accepts other human beings. The very word tolerance implies a lack of acceptance.

Something similar is happening to a woman I know. She is Indian and pre-med and bam, she gets pregnant by a white guy. The family does not know yet, but the girl is so convinced that the family will disown her. It is also possible that they may try to make her have an abortion. "Abort or we will disown you". We will see..... I am hoping it works out for them.
