OK—let’s say that it’s only active members of AllDeaf. We’ll say only members who have 100 or more posts, and who have posted at least once within the past 3 months. How many people is that? Three or four hundred, maybe? Then there’s the crew. Cruise ships usually have about as many employees as they do passengers (which is why cruises are so damned expensive). So that means 400 AllDeaf members, and 400 crew members. So 800 people, half of them hearing, and half of them deaf. What now? The ship is intact, so we can all sleep in individual cabins. It’s just grounded on a sandbar 100 feet offshore. Unfortunately, the radio equipment has been destroyed by a mischievous chimpanzee. The chimp has figured out a way to make an unlimited supply of alcohol though, so it’s party time. What do we do? I, for one, see paradise. Within a few years, everybody will know ASL, and the island will be overrun with babies, about one-fourth of them deaf. Martha’s Vineyard II, anyone?
