If Spot never seems to come when you call, obedience class may not be the answer. The dog may be suffering from a hearing problem and could be deaf in one or both ears, and certain breeds of dog are more prone to acquire a hearing problem.

Researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University are currently investigating a common problem of deafness in popular breeds such as Dalmatians and English Setters.

Dr. Keith Murphy, a geneticist in veterinary pathobiology, began the study on genetic canine deafness in 1999. "Our major goal is to understand the basis for hereditary deafness in certain breeds, and use that information to reduce the prevalence or even prevent future deaf offspring," Murphy said.

Murphy and his team of researchers have discovered that deafness in Dalmatians and English Setters does not follow a simple pattern of inheritance.

To solve the mystery of why approximately 30 percent of Dalmatians and 14 percent of English Setters are born deaf in one ear or both ears, the researchers must first identify the genes responsible for the problem.

"We don't know what exactly we are going to find, so we are studying the entire canine genome," Murphy said.

The researchers have collected information on 75 Dalmatians and 30 English Setters from across the United States. Murphy hopes to identify the inherited deafness genes by using a painless hearing test and collecting pedigree information on each dog.

The Texas A&M researchers are especially interested in collecting more data on English Setters with bilateral or unilateral deafness.

By using such researchers, the veterinarians hope to learn more about deafness in dogs and what might be done to alleviate hearing problems that certain breeds are likely to experience.

That's true. My sisters have two dalmations. One of them is deaf. My friend has a dalmation and it's deaf. My other friend has a dalmation and it's also deaf.

Once a time, I rang the Dalmation Breeder to ask if she had any deaf puppies, I will be happy to buy, she said she rather to put them to sleep than selling to anyone!!!

It is harder to find deaf Dalmation in Australia. Once I read a deaf newsletter 2 deaf English setters puppies are free to any good home.

Also not only Dalmation and English Setters, Great Dane too!!!

The breeder should be put to sleep, not the deaf puppies.

Well said, Banjo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember from read the magazine last year that deaf labrador is first dog, who had CI. I dont know either it work on that dog. Would you support CI on deaf pets?

I really dont know either it work on labrador or not. I will find out soon. They also tried on cat, too.

The owner said in the interview that cat is unhappy and cant hear due balance problem. CI work on her and she is happy and hear everything.

I will find out later.

I dont mind to adopt deaf pets.

Professional dog breeders often "put to sleep" puppies that don't meet breed standards. They want to keep the breed "pure" for showing and profit. But it really isn't necessary. They can sell or give away the puppies as "pets only; not for breeding purposes." That usually requires not providing AKC "papers", and the new owner signing an agreement that the puppy will be sterilized (spayed or neutered).

Same for cats. We bought a "retired" Siamese show cat (only one year old) from a professional cattery. We had to agree to have him neutered, and we were not given his papers. That was fine for us. We only wanted a pet.

I would scream.. I DISAGREE W/BREEDER whoever put to sleep the deaf puppy.

I'm Breeder of Bulldogs.. Doesn't matter w/puppies who have Deaf or hearing.

Should I put to sleep a hearing puppy??? How hearing people will scream at me.. you're cruel animal. I would samething to hearing people who put to sleep a Deaf puppy. I would call them... You're cruel animal too. Doesn't make any difference...

LEAVE puppies are birth naturally.. All Puppies breeds are always CUTE and loving needs be home placed!

I don't see any information AKC about pet "Deaf" require sleep?
I do not think so.. If AKC do that.. I'll file complaint againist AKC... I would be very happy speak it out w/CKC.. which I'm member of CKC.
CKC knows me only one Deaf invovled CKC.. it's me... I have no idea about AKC how many Deaf clients invovled member of AKC.. Why dont' they can rights appeal againist breeders who put DEAF puppy sleep! Disagree!

I have a friend who works at a pet store. He says that they are now allowed to advertise deaf pets because no one ever takes them. Since he's the only deaf employee working there, his boss usually keeps the pets for a week or two so that my friend can find a deaf customer who's willing to take the animal. If not, then they send the deaf pets back.

That´s what Banjo mean that it´s Dalmation Breeder should put in sleep, not deaf puppies. Banjo support deaf puppies, not breeder. Got it?

Banjo had deaf puppy named Sky few months ago.

The AKC doesn't require breeders to put puppies to sleep. That is just the way that some breeders decide to manage the breed standards.

I used to have American Bulldog who is deaf. Sadly my exh had to put him down cuz he was snippiing on my son and got bruised all over his arms. The headstart report to CPS and I was contacted by them. I wasnt to thrill about it and I told them what happened.

So it started the previous owner left the dog in the crate for 10 to 12 hrs and didnt get the proper training as it should have been. Then my exh abused the dog and I had to stand between them. We tried to find him a home and 2 times it didnt work out cuz he bite to the new owner and the children. It gave us no choice and to put him down. I was very sad to see him go. It was not his fault it was the previous owner and my exh. I blame them for the death of the dog. I still have his pix and will remember him

After he passed on. I was contacted by him and letting me know that he is at peace finally.

My neighbor has a Dalmation and he barks a lot louder than the others because he probably is 'hard of hearing'.

I thought that the reason why a lot of purebred dogs and cats have problems was related to the breeding methods used in old times. Like a breeder could select for agilty but the same gene would cause deafness or another problem.
