Real "Sybil" was a multiple personality fraud

OK, I looked up the posts of MsHmcd, and her profile. I don't think she's saying that she is actually a clinical split personality. I think she's just saying that she behaves differently in different settings. Sometimes she's quiet, sometimes "wild."

However, I'm basing that on a small amount of information available. Maybe she'll add more later. :)

Dr. Drew is just another one of those entertainers that exploit people. He nor Dr. Phil should be looked at for their entertainment value only. Really a sad statement of our society that people actually enjoy watching their fellow human beings exploited on television.

Well, at the beginning of every Dr Phil episode, there's a disclaimer that the Dr Phil show is for entertainment only. Wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for Dr Drew.

True. Many people fail to notice that disclaimer, however. We had a discussion not long ago where a member was intent on proving that Dr. Phil was a practicing psychologist. Fortunately, it didn't take long to prove that he isn't, but the member still kept insisting the "treatment" that these two were doing on their shows was valid. People need to be reminded that these guys are just entertainers.

Sigh . . .

I don't look at Dr. Drew as a serious program, and I haven't even looked at it more than three times, and then not for the whole program. I don't know how Dr. Phil got mentioned.

I happened to see the episode where he had on the author of the book that described the circumstances involved in the Sybil story fraud. I thought it was interesting, so I shared it.

I don't know anything about a new member at AD who might be a "split personality" (her words), and I said as much. I didn't want to make any kind of connection with that person to my thread about the book. I don't want to diagnose her. I just wanted to state that whatever she posted in her introduction had nothing to do with my thread.

It seems that the simplest thread here can become a big deal in no time.

Yeah, Reba, some people have it bad.....:D

Wow... I didn't know this. I remember seeing the movie twice... once in health class in junior high school and once in college in psychology.

If anyone is interested in actual cases of Dissociative Identity Disorder, I will be happy to recommend several books of actual, confirmed cases. It really is an interesting disorder.

Interesting. thank you for creating the thread. I thought i have seen this years ago but didn't think about it. also, its interesting that sybil was not the real case but there are more than what it was.

Again, thanks for this thread that i learn something about.

And an MD *shrug*

Pinsky, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the Keck School, received his M.D. from the Keck School and did his residency at USC. Pinsky is a practicing physician who is board certified in internal and addiction medicine and still runs a private practice. He also is on staff at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif.

His membership and activities in professional societies include the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the California Medical Association and the American Society of Internal Medicine.

Believe me, that was no diagnosis. It's called personal opinion.

I don't think anyone has to worry that they might be committed to the state hospital on the basis of anything I post here. :P

I agree. I refuse to watch shows like Dr.Phil.

And yet, when I post personal opinion, you feel justified in making the same remarks. Odd, isn't it?

I guess you missed the previous discussion on this topic. Entertainer. He is not practicing anything other than entertainment on TV.

I would say he knows what he is talking about more than most. Just sayin.

You are the professional in that field, not me. You label people with exact psychological conditions, and tell them to take meds, etc. We're hardly on the same level. The one with the training and practice in a profession bears much more of a burden than a layman making non-professional remarks.

There's a huge difference between the man on the street saying, "It looks like rain," and the NOA meteorologist issuing a tornado warning.

Nope. I have never labeled anyone with a specific psychological condition, and the only time I have ever told anyone to take meds it was in a joking, facetious manner.

When I am on AD, I am not here as a professional. To hold me to a higher standard when I am not in a professional capacity is exactly the double standard to which I am referring.

Comparing the weather to a psychiatric diagnosis is a case of apples to oranges.

But, hey. My point was made. No need to take it any further.
