Real "Sybil" was a multiple personality fraud

And an MD *shrug*

Detail

If I recall correctly, DrPhil is not currently licensed hence why he's labeled as an enterainer.

I believe his license was revoked because he did unethical stuff while he had his practice.

Don't you have to be crazy to fake something like this for attention? Just a different kind of crazy? lol

Dr Phil labels himself an entertainer and chose not to renew his license.

He gave it up back in 2006, his show started back in 2002. He had to give it up in order to remain an entertainer. He received quite a lot of backlash and complaints prior to not renewing his license.

All of his guests have to sign a waiver prior to appearing on his show. However, there was a complaint filed against him for the stunt he pulled with Britney Spears a few years ago.

So....he made a choice. :cool2: Alot of psychologists have complaints filed against them FYI :)

This thread isn't about Dr. Phil.

Make mine a Key Lime Pie!

Ages ago someone threw a banana cream pie into Anita Bryant's face. It was ages ago because the pie cost 69 cents. The humor went over her head, though.
Anyway, carry on.

From the OP

Sybil was something completely new. Her history of sadistic incest and her enormous number of alter personalities made her brand of multiplicity unprecedented. After a tiny fraternity of psychiatrists became fascinated with the condition and started hunting for new cases, that brand turned into an epidemic. In 1980, multiple personality disorder was listed as an official psychiatric illness. Soon, mental health practitioners in America were diagnosing thousands of cases a year.

*smh*

Exactly. It is not as easy to "fake" a mental disorder, especially something as intense as DID, as some seem to think.

Actually Sybil was not the first case of DID to be diagnosed. It simply started the general public talking about it. And with that, comes several misperceptions of what DID is.

Sybil was not a case of intentional malingering, or faking. In fact, denial of the existence of alters is a known feature of the disorder. If anything, it is possible that it was iatrogenic. But intentional malingering? I think not.

It is interesting to note that the doc treating Sybil had never before treated a case of DID. Treating a disorder with which you have no experience or knowledge is out of scope. Trying to treat out of scope can lead to errors that are responsible for an iatrogenic etiology of symptoms.
