Former Chief of Staff to Obama: Put Your Jacket On
White House Unbuttons Formal Dress Code

Mr. Card, who was George W. Bush’s first chief of staff, becomes the first member of that famously buttoned-up administration to criticize the more relaxed Obama dress code.

According to Inside Edition’s Web site, Mr. Card also said:

“The Oval Office symbolizes…the Constitution, the hopes and dreams, and I’m going to say democracy. And when you have a dress code in the Supreme Court and a dress code on the floor of the Senate, floor of the House, I think it’s appropriate to have an expectation that there will be a dress code that respects the office of the President.”

Mr. Card went on to add that, while he would not criticize Mr. Obama for his appearance, “I do expect him to send the message that people who are going to be in the Oval Office should treat the office with the respect that it has earned over history.”

As the Times’ Sheryl Gay Stolberg reported last week, Mr. Obama and Mr. Bush have, among other distinctions, drastically different views on White House dress codes.

Although his presidency is barely a week old, some of Mr. Obama’s work habits are already becoming clear. He shows up at the Oval Office shortly before 9 in the morning, roughly two hours later than his early-to-bed, early-to-rise predecessor. Mr. Obama likes to have his workout — weights and cardio — first thing in the morning, at 6:45. (Mr. Bush slipped away to exercise midday.)

He reads several papers, eats breakfast with his family and helps pack his daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, off to school before making the 30-second commute downstairs — a definite perk for a man trying to balance work and family life. He eats dinner with his family, then often returns to work; aides have seen him in the Oval Office as late as 10 p.m., reading briefing papers for the next day.

“Even as he is sober about these challenges, I have never seen him happier,” Mr. Axelrod said. “The chance to be under the same roof with his kids, essentially to live over the store, to be able to see them whenever he wants, to wake up with them, have breakfast and dinner with them — that has made him a very happy man.”

In the West Wing, Mr. Obama is a bit of a wanderer. When Mr. Bush wanted to see a member of his staff, the aide was summoned to the Oval Office. But Mr. Obama tends to roam the halls; one day last week, he turned up in the office of his press secretary, Robert Gibbs, who was in the unfortunate position of having his feet up on the desk when the boss walked in.

“Wow, Gibbs,” the press secretary recalls the president saying. “Just got here and you already have your feet up.” Mr. Gibbs scrambled to stand up, surprising Mr. Obama, who is not yet accustomed to having people rise when he enters a room. :laugh2:

Your opinion???

Andy Card can go to hell. Prez O has the right to take off his jacket, roll up his sleeves and get right down to work.

Now how is this for hypocrites in the Bushit Adminisatration...

Prez O have rights to walk around with white shirt. IMHO, He's up to dress code. He may be hot under jacket or jacket is restricting his movement, so he have every rights in entire USA to walk around inside White House without jacket! I don't give one damn about stupid dress code cuz he is still wearing proper clothes!! I've seen some biz CEO walk around with white shirt just like Prez O does. So What!

Remmy Billy C jogged around WA DC and meet with ordinary citizens while wearing jogging pant and sweatshirt while he's a Prez..

If I encountered any Prez of USA wearing white shirt, it is not embarrassing!! It show that he's in business!! With or without jacket, that's who he is!! One gotta remmy that USA is a FREE Country!! He represent FREEDOM!!!

Mr. Card who worried about rule about dress code to shut the hell up!!! As long as Prez DO NOT walk around White House with only towel wrapped around his waist!!!! :eek2:

If I'm a Prez of USA, I wouldn't care if I walk in or around White House without jacket!

Why does it matter to be up and on with the appearance? Sure, Appearance may be something meaningful but it should not be suppressed.

As long as Obama is dressed properly and dressed up to a comfort, then I don't see anything wrong with him wanting to "hang" loose. It's not like Obama is working in the Oval office with sweatpants or a pant that has holes in it.

It's funny how some people say that we should be dressing like this but only they don't know that we always can and find a way to dress comfortable while looking good too.

It be nice if we see him wearing pant with holes. Thus it shows us that he is very humble man like every one of us!

Haha, I get what you're saying. I'm just making a point that a person does not have to be uptight about it's appearance to be humble, ya know? :)

Yay... he's laid back!

I'd rather he focused on the work than the appearances.

To take off the jacket and roll the shirt sleeves up, used to be symbolic of a man getting down to hard work.

I thought it meant that someone was going to get a beating!
(Media influenced response)

That's why you guys picked him ;)

He's a real fashion nerd eh?

I guess he just say that cause he dont like Obama and that he's a democrat so yeah, he can pretty much shove the "dress code" rules up his ass.

He's already appropriately dressed! This is not British Royalty or a fashion show, this is about rolling up his sleeves and getting down and dirty! Even Bush's strict appearance didn't help his performance! LEAVE OBAMA THE HELL ALONE INSANE CONSERVATIVE HICKS!

I can't beleive that Card dictate that President Obama how to wear in the White House? What a absurd...

I like the way the Obama wear and show great respect for the office and the public.

The President should be able to dress professionally AND work hard at the same time. Afterall, he's working in a comfortable air conditioned office, not a farm field or factory. :)

But the president is an adult and know what to wear.

One needn't wear a jacket in order to be dressed proferssionaly, nor to exude an air of professionalism. Obama's demeanor is professional, jacket or no jacket.

Now, we could talk about the last president, who even with a jacket on, looked like a bumbling, out of place hick.

a/c?

there was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.

“he’s from hawaii, o.k.?” said mr. Obama’s senior adviser, david axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. “he likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”
