I made this short visual eulogy for our little Lhasa Apso/poodle mix who died on July 3. We all still miss him terribly. I hope you enjoy it. I don’t know how to CC video yet, so I’ll just print the lyrics below. The song is Thank You For Being a Friend by Andrew Gold.

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
your heart is true you're a pal and a confidant

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see, the biggest gift would be from me
and the card attached would say,
Thank you for being a friend

Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend
Thank you for being a friend

If it's a car you lack
I'd surely buy you a cadillac
Whatever you need, anytime of the day or night

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And when we both get older
With walking canes and hair of gray
Have no fear, even though it's hard to hear
I will stand real close and say,
Thank you for being a friend

(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Let me tell you bout a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend

And when we die and float away
Into the night, the Milky Way
You'll hear me call, as we ascend
I'll see you there, then once again
Thank you for being a friend

Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
(I want to thank you)
Thank you for being a friend
Whoa, tell you about a friend
(Thank you right now, for being a friend)
Thank you for being a friend
(I wanna tell you right now, and tell you again)
Thank you for being a friend
(I wanna thank you, thank you, for being a friend)
Thank you for being a friend

There’s no way to know for certain without a necropsy, but the vet who examined him felt that it was something called a liver shunt. He had started vomiting about a week before, but we were hoping he just had a little gastritis and treated him with Pepto-Bismol and a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken. This seemed to work, and it looked like he was bouncing right back. But then he suddenly got worse, started vomiting bile, and became weak and almost unable to move. Then yellow pus started oozing from his eye sockets. By the time we got him to the vet, it was obvious that he was hanging by a thread. We decided that it would be best to euthanize him. After I got home and looked it up, I found that even if he had survived, the surgery to repair the shunt would have run into thousands of dollars, and even then the prognosis would have been guarded.

The link doesn't work anymore, because I made some changes to the video and reposted it to YouTube. Here's the final version:
