UK Medics to Prescribe Maggots as Wound Cleansers

LONDON (Reuters) - British doctors will be able to prescribe maggots to NHS patients with infected wounds from Friday onwards, a hospital official said.

He said the National Health Service had realized maggots were a cheaper and more beneficial way of treating wounds than using conventional medicine.

Patients would be able to treat themselves at home and avoid the possibility of picking up a hospital infection.

Maggots have been used for centuries to rid wounds of decaying flesh, but after the discovery of antibiotics their use went into decline.

"People didn't like the thought of creepy-crawlies on their skin," said Tony Fowler, customer services manager at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, Wales.

"But now there is a renewed interest because of the problems caused by the over-use of antibiotics, and the NHS has seen the cost-effectiveness of maggots."

Research at the Princess of Wales Hospital confirmed that placing sterile maggots on wounds could make them heal faster than conventional medicine.

The creatures devour dead, infected tissue and kill off bacteria that could block the healing process without damaging the surrounding tissue, since they cannot ingest healthy flesh.

Previously, patients could obtain sterile maggots from certain hospitals and research centers.
Whoa! Would you do this?

Maggots can't feed on living tissues. If it were to go inside, it would die and fade away.

Ergh...maggots in any open wounds on my body -- I don't think I could cope with the idea of those icky things in me. :barf:

No Way! I wouldn't want those creepy Maggots on me....

I know one of my friend who has multiple sclerosis. She had the maggots crawl all over her legs, hip and arms to help her muscle movements relax. It has been ache alot in her weak muscle. She lays down in the bathtub with the maggots all over her. Oh yeah, it creeps me.

At her age, 40 - She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). She felt numbness in her fingers that spread up her wrist to the side of her head. In front of 45 students in the class with ASL.

Maggot worms grow in the corn seeds. Image, we ate the corn ?? Ewww ! Yucky !

What is Maggot Therapy?

Medicinal maggots have three actions:

1) they debride (clean) wounds by dissolving the dead (necrotic), infected tissue

2) they disinfect the wound, by killing bacteria

3) they stimulate wound healing and help the muscle relax.

:werd: Leeches were used years ago and sometimes used today, to help clean blood or stop headaches.

That’s nothin’—I know a girl who put maggots in her mouth on the Howard Stern show. She didn’t eat them, mind you—she didn’t want to hurt them. The last time I talked to her she was training to become a forensic entomologist (yeah, she’s got issues).

I remember a story where some guy got his ear cut off, so the doctors reattached his ear but they were going to lose the ear to gangrene. Then the doctors decided to use sterile leeches on the ear. The saliva from the leeches helped the blood flow and circulate freely. In the end, the ear was saved and the guy didn't lose it.

I would rather depend on Mother Nature's medicines than manmade!
