My family & I debated about this issues last weekends

My hubby & youngest son consider fish/seafood as a meat which my oldest son and I see different and said that it's not meat.

I said that the vegetarians eat fish because it is not meat. My youngest son said a person is not a vegetarian if he/she eat fish... and can not understand why a person claimed to be vegetarian when he/she eat fish... Fish is a MEAT... My youngest son urged that what inside fish has if I catch the fish and cut fish's tummy open... inside what? I answered "organ".. He urged...NO, it's meat. Fish is an animal...

My youngest son suggest me to ask you all about this... I told him that it would be good idea to ask you all because some of you are vegetarian.

Come and discuss...

I don't have a personal opinion on this, but I do know that the Catholic Church does not consider fish to be meat.

That's exact what I was raised to know that fish is not consider to be meat because my family are Roman Catholic. It's not just Roman Catholic but Vegetarians as well.

yes, fish is considered meat since it is protein
like beef, chicken, etc.
You can google it up or like Omegaman did.. look it
up in Wikipedia.

omegaman, :ty: for interesting link.

Mistyrose, yes I googled at websites but I rather to have all of your view on this. Yes, I know that fish is a protein but there're also protein in vegetarian diet when they don't eat meat.

If vegetarian eat fish then they are not consider to be vegetarian, don't they?

It's muscle you're eat.
It got protein you're eat.
It got blood before cook it.

It's meat. It does same as your body you cut it. *gasp* Help! Call 911!!

Fish is a meat. Fish is an animal.. it has eyes. It breathes for oxygen, it percieves pain. It moves.

Vegetarians do NOT eat fish or chicken. Those who eat fish only along with plants are called pescetarians.

But why vegetarians eat fish when they said that they don't eat meat?

Occch, we post on the same time, Netrox...

Let Vegetarians answer their view to here because I know some ADers are vegetarians and said that they eat fishes.

Good question!

What about other sea food such as lobster, clam, crabs etc etc...are they also meats as well?

To me it is a meat. I don't know if that vegetarians eat fish or not...I'll ask my friend cuz she is vegetarians.

"Meat" is the edible flesh portion of a dead creature, including birds, fish, crustaceans, and mammals.

According to vegblog.org:
Classifications of Vegetarians

26 Oct '04

Posted by: ryan in: Features, Miscellaneous

The two (well, four) most common types of vegetarians are:

* Lacto-ovo vegetarians don’t eat beef, poultry, or fish, but do eat eggs and dairy products. (Similarly, lacto vegetarians consume dairy but not eggs while ovo vegetarians eat eggs but don’t consume dairy.)
* Vegans consume no animal products or animal by-products. This means no beef, poultry, fish, eggs, or dairy (many vegans also avoid honey). Veganism also extends beyond the diet. Vegans avoid leather, wool, silk, down, etc. Some people use the term strict vegetarian for people who follow a vegan diet but still use animal products in other parts of their lives.

There are also some restrictive subcategories of veganism:

* Fruitarians eat raw fruit and seeds only.

* Raw/living foodists eat at least 75% uncooked (items may be heated up to 110 degrees), unprocessed, organic fruits and vegetables, with the intention of preserving more vitamins and minerals. There are very few “pure” raw foodists though many people “eat raw” at least occasionally.

Then there are the classifications of vegetarians that aren’t really vegetarians. Their inclusion here does not imply an acceptance of these often confusing, misleading terms, but rather to serve as a reference.

* Pesco-vegetarians eat no beef or poultry but do eat fish.
* Pollo-vegetarians eat no beef, but do eat poultry.
* Semi-vegetarians or Flexitarians eat “less” meat
* Classifications of Vegetarians [The Veg Blog]

I guess it would be up to the individual to decide which classification fits.

I think it is meat. It was a living being with a brain at one point.

There you go! Whether or not fish is considered to be meat is entirely dependent upon individual perspective. A Catholic would not consider it to be meat, but a Vegan would.

When I went to public school in the 50's and 60's, Friday cafeteria lunches were always fish sticks, in consideration of the Catholic kids. However, those fish sticks might not even have qualified as "fish", much less meat.

 Gotta agree with you on that one, Reba! I'm not sure what fish sticks qualify as.

Fish is considered as meat to me.

It has blood and muscles. Hence the flesh.

But I consider it as white meat.

A person who only eat the fish is not vegetarian. It's other word, start with "P" I forgot how to spell, but only thing the vegetarians eat is vegetables, fruits, dairy, and others that does not kill or harm anything.

I vote yes the fish is meat because the fish is living object and it hurt them to be hooked from fishing and to be cooked. That's why I refuse to do the fishing, ever.
