I agree with Reba's posting.

There is a deeper classification to the word vegetarian in which you are a true vegan or an "omni"-vegan, or a once-in-awhile vegan.

I think it's the perception of really what you consider yourself personally. The principles of your culture or religion may tell you that eating fish is considered okay, and that you're still a vegan (although pesco by technical terms), like the Samoans per example.

I've several somewhat old friends that are vegans, and their ideology differs from each other.

One is a vegan raised from a Buddhist form of family background - where tofu, soy, is substituted for protein. His mother even runs a chinese veggie restaurant.

The other is a vegan from personal choice. She even considers stuff like Marshmallows and Jello to be considered taboo to eat because it contains "gelatin" - the fat of animals.

I used to work with a girl who is Vegan. She and I did dicussion about fish before, Fish and all seafood are a WHITE meat.

Yes, fish is a meat. There is no major vegetarian or vegan organization that considers the consumption of fish as part of their definition of vegetarian or vegan.

Anyone who claims to be a vegetarian or vegan and consumes fish is misusing the term and creating confusion such as this for the public. They are merely a person who does not eat red meat, chicken, what have you.

I voted no on this one. Since fishes does not fit in white meats group or red meat groups. Unless someone invented a new name for it.

hhmmm... scientifically? I think fish is considered a meat. IMO - for the sake of simplicity and avoiding confusion... fish is fish. when you say "meat", it's something like cow/lamb/etc.. a mammal.

:dunno:

Fish sticks.. oh those are mystery meat. Safe to say.

Fish I think it's not meat but hubby says yes it is meat.

I love love love seafood. Yummy-o.. if I eat so much seafood, I'd grow gills.

How bout alligator?
Meat or Fish, in your opinion, regardless of science specifics?

I ate BBQ'ed Alligator before and I have to say.. it tastes like chewy fish.

Also note! Be safe and monitor your mercury intake from seafood.

But why vegetarians eat fish when they said that they don't eat meat?

Not all 'vegitarians' eat fish.
In fact the ones that do are not real vegitarians. They are Pescatarians. Some Vegitarians and Vegans object really strongly when people call themselves vegitarian then eat fish. It doesn't bother me too much.

The problem with people thinking that vegitarians eat fish is when dishes that contain fish are labelled as vegitarian on menues in restaurants. That makes things more difficult for true vegitarians. I also had that problem even as a pescotarian because I only ate sea fish(apart from tuna).

I say it is Fish regardless what science says.

Alligator.. wow. You're brave!

Yes, you are right about the mercury intake because some fish can live a long time in the sea and we don't know its age hence the mercury intake.

Alligator is not a fish. It is a reptile and breathes air not with gills like a fish.

Pesco vegetarians would not count alligator.

The ultimate way I personally classify true vegetarian or not:

If if it has internal organs and it has an outer flesh or skin, and you eat it in any shape or form, then you aren't considered a true vegetarian.
That's my opinion.

I don't think a fish considered a meat. The reason I said this is because, when I think of the words " Omega 3 " that comes from the fish, any other meat like cow, pig, and such don't carry Omega 3. Both fish and other kinds of meat are not the same - IMO. Fish came from the water while the other meats such as cow, pig, chicken, and so forth came from the ground. I mean, fish live in the water while others live on the land. :)

Yes that... Omega 3. You said everything I wanted to say. Thanks Maria!

Major brain fart tonight!

Are you kidding me? Matter of fact, some fish may have more protein than beef or pork! I usually eat fish for my protein requirements, it's definitely a healthier meat.

The fish is living object, not just a food in the water. The fishes do have feelings too, they tend to stay together as socially, flee when predators came to them, they breath with their gills, they eat some of small living objects in the water, they even attack on people by biting them, they even have a heart and brain, which also include the blood. There are a lot of things that they do have feelings and are living. It's not making any sense that they are not meat, anything come from living object as food are meat, period.

yup. that's why i have a balanced diet.... all thanks to my mom. I usually eat meat 2x a week and fish 3x a week. Vegetables are served at every meal.

lol colorful description there but sorry - I don't believe fishes have feeling (like person) just because they squirm when feeling pain. it's merely a reflex... Fish does not have a brain to recognize pain. Some fishes stay together for survival purpose, not for social purpose. I think you're confusing that with dolphins. Fish is a very simple organism with "programmed" brain - they flee when seeing predator. their body shakes when hooked. they mate when seeing a female. The scientists have not been able to prove that fishes have feeling.

about fishes attacking people... are you talking about piranhas?
