My partner and I recently got a 5 month old Border Collie from a breeding farm.

We discovered that it has been around other dogs from birth... this is the first time he has been around people. He is extremely shy.

The puppy's name is Sam.

Sam listen and obeys more to Andrew (my partner) than me.

I am having problems getting Sam to get used to me, not to run away from me, and to obey me.

I know it will take a while for us to break him into his new home environment...

I know there are few dog-experts on AllDeaf.com, so could you come out of your hiding and give me some advice?

Thanks

I'm sure that's normal. All new animals are shy and will eventually become playful. Sometimes, they grow to be used to one kind instead of others. I have a friend who has a cat that always hated females, but liked males. Whenever a female approached it, it would hiss at her. Heh!

try giving him treats, playing with him and be spoiled.. then he'll love u even more :D

just an idea.. i did this to my dog before it helps when u do those..

and oh.. other thing.. give them comfort :D

Try sitting with him, quietly, on the floor and spend time playing ball or tug n war with a rope, etc. That'll get him used to you and get familiar with you.

Well one time my dad adopted a full grown Siamese cat (about a yr old) cuz his former owners were moving out of town so dad said he will adopt him..
well when he first came into our house, he was so scared, running around the house looking for a hiding place, well he found it, right under the China Hutch and stayed there for 2 days!! I coaxed and coaxed him with food and all, couldnt get him to come out..then finally on third day, he creeped right into my dad's lap!! It really startled my dad, mom and me..pretty soon, he finally warmed up to me and mom..he liked to sleep with me at night..so it was plain shyness and of course he was terrified to be in a home with people he doesnt know..it takes time for even puppies and kittens to get used to new place and strange people..give Sam time to get used to you all...i guarantee he will just fit right in, in no time!..when we adopted my pitbull puppy, he was a little scared and cried the first night but he adjusted very fast...he is now 2 years old.

Ah.. okay..
I'm Breeder of Bulldogs...
Actually I've seen different bullies of puppies some of shy.. That normal for few months it will come break and become closer to you... Unless you have to treat'em well and grooming caring lot.. Give'em TENDER LOVING more everyday... Would be great take your puppy goes outside for walk.. Your puppy will know you more everyday reason it's break ice. Give take a time not needed to be rush!

Good luck.. *wink*

Sherrie,

I am the owner of an 8 yo Border Collie ( I have had her since she was 7 weeks old).. Most Border Collies that I have known from my past experiences, they prefer being with their masters.. They do get along with all other dogs BUT BC arent that crazy hanging out with them dogs.. BC are so devoted to their masters.. Anyway, I trained her the first 2 years and it was well worth paid off the hard working! She even went to obdience school. She got too bored with it.. She was way too advance for that class because she was already trained by me..Anyway right now, She is not shy anymore.. She lovessss being around the people that she knows.. By the way, she was in the frisbee and free flight contest during her younger years and was placed 2nd out of 50 dogs!!! I sure was damn proud of her !

So do give your dog lotsssss of attentions and trainings too.. It will be paid off after the hard working... You will be glad once he learns the tricks and the obdiences.. Hope that helps answering to your questions.. Feel free to ask away.

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice... will spend some time with him today :)
