From the high-fashion runways to the streets of New York -- they're baaack!

Two decades after their heyday, the baggy, parachute-style pants made famous by MC Hammer are again hanging off the legs of celebrities and fashionistas.

"Harem pants are huge this season," said Suze Yalof Schwartz, executive fashion editor at large for Glamour magazine. "You're going to be seeing them everywhere. We've seen them on Ralph Lauren's runway, on Michael Kors' runway, Jill Stuart. Everyone is doing it."

Harem pants may be what they're called on the runway, but Schwartz says today's version is essentially the same as the infamous Hammer pants popular a couple of decades ago. The main differences are how they're worn and the fabric used to make them.

"Now they're in luxurious fabrics; you're seeing them with a heel or tailored with a blazer," Schwartz said. "Black looks great right now in harem pants."

But to find out how to really rock a pair of Hammer -- um, make that harem -- pants, there is only one definitive source: MC Hammer himself.

"You can make a fashion statement," Hammer said. "You can move in 'em. You can dance in 'em. ... It accentuates the movement, and it gives you freedom of movement. It's a slight delay. You move, and then the pants move, so it brings a nice little flair."

And for those who aren't dancing? Is there a wrong way to wear Hammer pants?

"From your heart, you wear them, how you feel today," Hammer said. "If it's a sunshiny day and you have a certain pair that goes with the sunshine, and you want to put some bright colors with them, then you do that."

But while MC Hammer clearly still loves the pants, their resurgence has left others with the same question they had in the 80s: Why?

"Good Morning America Weekend Edition" gave some people in New York's Times Square a chance to try on some of the new harem pants -- with mixed results.

"Oh, my God, oh, my God!" was the reaction of one young woman getting a glimpse of herself in the pants for the first time.

"People who are not fashion savvy should stay away from harem pants because they can go terribly, terribly wrong," said Schwartz. "If you pair them with something too casual or too baggy, you're going to make yourself look like a big balloon, and that's unattractive."

So, for those who do want to try it out, here are some of Schwartz's tips for how to pull off the look:

You don't have to be model thin to wear harem pants. You just need to pair them with the right top and accessories.

Women should dress up harem pants with high heels and a tailored top. Stay away from anything bulky on top.

Men should dress down harem pants with sneakers and a T-shirt.

Don't over-accessorize! Think of the pants themselves as a statement piece.

The long version of harem pants looks best on most people. Stay away from the Capri or short versions.

Choose solid fabrics over prints, which can look a little too retro.

Woot!

Maybe I should buy one for fun and wear it. I wouldn't mind!

"Halt, Hammerzeit!"
Figuratively translated to english as; "It's Hammertime!" (A popular MC Hammer quote)

How about a hybrid of Hammer and cargo pants? that would really seriously rock for me as I wont wear any other pants. I now prefer to wear cargo pants or shorts. That way I can have Hammer pants yet have the huge pockets for my BB Storm and a 1 liter bottle of water I have to take to work oftens.

This made me laugh:

I don't know if I'll be wearing Hammer pants anytime soon, but I still think it's awesome that the 80s are coming back into style again. The
80s were a great decade. :cool2:

I only can say for the fashionable clothes in 1980's is SO ugly. that's all i can say. plus the hairdo style. :ugh: I couldn't believe that i was THERE! i bet someone will make it retro into the neon clothes again. :giggle:

I'm happy those pants are back because I tell you.. I grunt & groan when I try on pants in the change rooms.

I swear people wonder what's going on there and look for hubby when I leave the change room!

Even though I'm totally blind, I thought neon clothes were awesome! I wore neon so often that my friends used to call me "neon."

I loved the clothing and hair styles of the 80s. They were better than anything that came out of the 70s or 90s. :barf:

Oh no! The hammer pants are back!

Seriously, I never liked the Hammer pants and I thought it was so hideous.

I like 'em!....So comfy for those who do have big hips (like me)! MCHammer put so much energy into the 80's...."It's Hammer Time"!

Anyone still remmy the "bell bottoms" of the 60's...and the "stove pants"?

I agree with you. I don't want 80's styles again.

I wasn't born yet in the 60's so I can't relate to the bell bottoms from back then, but nowdays jeans come in every size and shape, and half of 'em are bell bottoms! Virtually all my jeans are bell-bottoms. (Cuz the butt is still butt-hugging and works well on me!)

But I am so thankful the 80's are over - those were my high school days and spending an hour in front of the mirror was a waste of time! Now I can be beautiful and natural in the 2000's :)

While waiting for my friend to wake up this morning, I browsed thru her celebrity magazine and saw that many of them were wearing these pants. I was like "huh? When did this happen?" LOL!

Even in the 80s, I didnt wear them...never liked them and still dont.

I was born in 1970, so I'm very familiar with the ugly style of clothing from that decade. What are "stove pants" and what do they look like?

They also came back... as "Flairs"

Trends always come and go!

For the Harem pants. Ehhh. They said to get solid color ones, to prevent too much of a retro. Just like the Flairs. They were not as flaired out to prevent it from being too much of a retro.

I can say the same for kids wearing Plaids. Nowadays. Those are the clothes that my Grandparents used to wear! :giggle:

Pretty neat seeing trends going in and out.
