Got a question about appliances

Quartz counter

Yes, It is a good one too. I have only seen one crack, ever..... and that was improperly installed. (no, not by me)

Thanks for the information. Do you know roughly what the cost per square foot might be so I don't get ripped off??????

Were getting our quote tomorrow from Lowes. I think the brand is Allen + Roth. I guess it's not quartz. It's acrylic solid countertops.

Any good. Or should I not go this way???
Anybody know? Style "Tacana" $55 sq. foot
My kitchen is pretty big. I've waited forever to get this done. Want to make sure I'm doing it right.
I appreciate any help.

Those are nice tops as well and the price seems about right. It's a totally different look that stone tops. You have to be very careful not to put anything hot on the counter top though. A hot pan can do some damage.

You might be able to get a decent discount by contacting installers and having them purchase the tops for you. I was usually able to get the tops about 20% cheaper than the stores sold them for. IF you go that route make sure you do your homework on the installer. The nice part about buying through the store is that Lowes and Home Depot are very customer friendly and will take care of you if there is an issue. So that extra 20% could be nice protection.

Thanks TXGolfer
Sounds like I'm ok then. My brother-in-law owns his own tile company. But he's redoing their kitchen now. Too bad he only lives a couple hours away in San Jose. Otherwise I would have loved to give him the job.

How about Awesome Interiors or Weird Homes?

Does anybody remember these HGTV shows from the 90ties?

I loved some of these homes!!!!! wo-wiee!!

I'm not familiar with acrylic solid countertops. Do you have a link for this product? I couldn't find it on the Lowes site.

I can't remember how much our Silestone cost. I'd have to look it up. For some reason, I thought it was per linear running foot, not square foot but I'm not sure.

Edit: I found a link:

I don't know if it's the same one.

Just catching up with this thread.

I too prefer stainless steel for a sink. In addition to the staining factor that Beach Girl mentioned there is chipping. A co-worker didn't like the water spotting but I find that easy to wipe. Based on a few other things (like minor chips to bathtub) I think I would have found chips in the sink when I bought this house in 1989. But, being stainless steel my sink is still in good shape now. Based on the cabinets and range the sink probably dates from the 1950's.

The stickers that a gal in the apartment under me put up in the 70's or 80's were the same size as standard ceramic tile (4" x4" ??).

After contending with the grout lines in a ceramic tile bath I don't want to do it again anywhere. I had a smooth tub surround put on within months of moving in here.

When I put in a new toilet in 2009 at the same time I had new vinyl flooring put down in bathroom I went with bone. It doesn't seem quite as stark a white, goes well with my vanity top and I feel will not clash with any other color changes I may want to make over the years.

I prefer my stainless steel sink for the kitchen also. I've had this one about four years, and there are no spots, stains, nicks, etc. It's still shiny and new looking.

Mine is a deep double sink, undermount. I bought it new, on eBay.

So, yes, you can buy everything, including the kitchen sink, on eBay. :giggle:

I also bought the faucet set and pot filler on eBay, new with warranties, on eBay for about 1/3 the cost (and more choices) than Lowes offered.

Also bought our two vessel sinks and faucets for the master bathroom on eBay, new. Love 'em!

KristinaB, I can't wait to see your pictures! It's a challenge to do a new construction but I bet it's exciting, too. :)

Acrylic solid countertops would be comparable to Corian. Corian has been popular, but has somewhat gone out of favor because it DOES scratch, and it will scorch if you put hot pots on it. Although they advertise that you can sand these blemishes out, do you want to do that very often? As for style, you can get a nearly mono-color surface, without much pattern, or with a very subtle pattern.

With Silestone or another quartz product, you will not have the scratching or scorching problems. The patterns are somewhat more like granite, with a lot of color to them, and a somewhat "busy" look, resembling patterned stone.

So it's a question of knowing yourself. Do you always use a hot pad under anything hot? Do you ever want to cut directly on your countertop? (I never do, myself.) Do you have small appliances and so forth directly on your countertop that might move around and scratch the surface? What sort of look do you want, a solid color or more of a variation in color?

It's not so much that there's a "right" or "wrong" decision; it's more how you live and use your kitchen, as well as the overall look you want.

Hey Reba,
I can't find a website for that product. It looks really nice though. It is per sq. foot. If that helps any. I agree with a stainless steel sink. I've seen a lot of them and might require a little extra work. I really don't mind. I've been waiting many, many years so it's worth it.

We got the quote. Was lower than we expected. But, now hubby wants to look around and get more quotes. Drives me crazy. He is a Civil Engineer. Needs to study for a long time before we can buy anything big. Probably a good thing. Lots of info about the counters i was considering. I think ill have to change to something else. If i ever get to have it done. Ive learned so much about everything from all of you.
Thanks
Hapoy New Year

Oh, I know the feeling. I shop around a lot before buying anything too. Especially so for anything that costs more than a few hundred dollars.

I know its s good thing but, i have no patience. Its nice to have something good to look forward to. Plus its A LOT of money so i understand. After we always end up with something nice. Took me forever to get my new stainless steel refridgerator. We did and that day they had a drawing at RC Wileys and we ended up getting it for free $1600.00 all that time and it ended up being free. Now, if only i could do that witth my kitchen??????
