Georgia: English-Only Driver's Tests

ASL is NOT English. If the country ONLY recognizes English as the offical language ASL can NOT be the language of instruction outside a foreign language classroom. That would mean that ASL would NOT be recognized as an offical language in America. Do you want that?

ASL is not a written nor spoken language thus this policy does not affect ASL. Like what Lighthouse said... deafies do read and write in English, right? that's why many deafies have driver license now, right? This policy only affects the non-English speaking people.... not deafies.

btw, many public junior/ high school (well just about all of them) teach foreign languages of their choice. So it is not like we are English-only or anti-spanish/french/Japanese .. It's just that nobody uses it in this country.

But there are people who want English only. This is one step in that direction.

and is there English sign language? oh yea... it's called ASL!!! :laugh2: btw - it's English only... for SPOKEN & WRITTEN.

ASL is currently NOT recognized in many states as an official language.

If we push the only-English concept, then ASL must be taught as a foreign language...which would be a STEP for many schools because then they can finally have a curriculum-based instruction to formally teach ASL. English is taught formally from k-12...but in most programs, even Bi-Bi programs, ASL is not formally taught as far as syntax, structure, vocabulary, etc.

The test should still be in English, even for deaf people. They also must learn to read and write English to get a driver's license...for the same reasons Spanish-speaking people should. I disagree with the test being interpreted in ASL. I do know for a fact some states do allow such accommodations.

because English is a spoken and written language. ASL has neither. That's why it doesn't fit their "legal term" of language. Yes it's a sad fact that the majority does not consider ASL as language but that's beside the point. This is about having an official SPOKEN & WRITTEN language for America. France's official language is French. UK's official language is English. Mexico's official language is Spanish. Canadian's language is both French and English. How about USA? it's time that America has its official language.

I'm sure the majority prefers to keep it that way and that's fine with me but I'm NOT OK with the DMV requirement for non-English speaking immigrants. It's the matter of legal issues when it comes to accidents or related. I'm sorry but this is not a Spanish-hybrid country. Keep it ENGLISH please. :cool2:

remember - this thread is about ENGLISH-ONLY driver test.... not official language for America so we're straying bit off the course.

Try telling Californians that this isn't a Spanish-speaking country...there are times I wonder if I accidentally crossed the Mexican borders because everything is in Spanish.

yep I know... that is the issue we need to address. it's as if Mexico's reclaiming their territory

?????????????????????????????????????? I have absolutely no idea where you're going with this. You're treating ASL like it's a french language. America = English & ASL. period. is it clear enough for you?

ASL is a substitution for SPOKEN ENGLISH communication as English has no visual form of language. Like I said - this thread is about SPOKEN & WRITTEN language. Spanish is a SPOKEN & WRITTEN language of Mexico. They have no place in America. Tell me what American deafies read and write in? Spanish? French?

either way.... this is America. I understand this country is built by immigrants but here's a problem - if we all are going to live together in this country, then we need to be on a common ground where it's easier for all of us to live together harmoniously. so how do we do that? a common language - ENGLISH. Again - I'm not asking each immigrants to have English skill at college-level. Driver test's english is barely at high school level

That's part of life about you don't like DMV requirement, there's nothing for you do except for lawmakers will take care of it, even not every states will consider it.

Spanish speaking in CA is already about over 30% and will be over 50% in 2050, also Spanish speaking has been originally from CA in 1800s when it was under Mexico rule. Increase of immigrants in southwest states, Florida, Texas are from Latin America.

Both of English and Spanish are dual language in some states, even English is official language at government level and DMV isn't one of them in CA.

I said get a life if you have problem with people who drive and don't speaking Engish, that is not big deal.

Jiro, You said it's not hard for them to learn basic english language but that's not true, there's many immigrants have trouble to learn to speaking or written in english, especially many english learners at high school in CA are failed on CAHSEE (state exam, required to pass to get HS diploma) and some of them are sue in court to get exemption and state has to re-write on state exam or change the requirement for them to receive HS diploma.

Same goes with Florida, there's alot of hispanic students are protest against state exam due issues with complicated of english language in state exam (FCAT) and they are unable to finish the high school without pass the state exam, even no certificate offered but only HS diploma.

I went to high school with mostly spanish speaking students and they said that they got problem with learn to speaking or written in english.

you talked big about "get a life" and "it's part of life". Well gee - TOUGH LIFE! This is America - Speak E-N-G-L-I-S-H please! You wanna speak spanish and screw English? go back to Mexico!!

and you say this is not a big deal? CA being over 30% Spanish (assuming they don't know english at all)... well that's a big goddamn deal for me. Do you want CA to be a Mexico? Like I said - this is an issue that must be addressed. It's fine for them to speak spanish...... as long as they know English (whether or not if it's their 1st or 2nd language).

ENGLISH OR GTFO! :cool2:

No, you don't make any sense, even you don't support your claim in previous post.

I told you only, not spanish speaking people to get a life, there's many crossed stuff that you have been done, again toobad for you if you said it's big deal to you.

Speaking of America culture as tough life is no make sense, nice try.

Last paragraph, it's unacceptable post.

why not? You speak of tough life to me for not making it an English requirement. So you support the leechers? How disrespectful of them to leech our system and this country without learning English. :nono:

Wow, you made bad assumption, that's not true about how I support leechers and again, I'm favor for treat foreigners so equally if they have trouble to speaking english language and english isn't official language in US but only de facto.

I already explained in my post about experience of foreigners on learn how to speaking english, that's not easy as you think, even you don't go to public school with majority of other spoken language than just for english.

So all the forms at the DMV are Spanish-translated so that non-English speaking people can fill out the paperwork and take the written test in spanish... and yet all the road signs are written in English, shows the idiocracy of our situation.

And just cause they can recognize the few very common signs, doesn't mean they'll be able to interpret every situation they may encounter on the road. For example - there is a massive mountain pass to get over if you want to go to Portland or vice versa, and road conditions are always changing so they post an electronic billboard that feeds out information on the pass, which can be very critical to drivers, such as "pass closed" or "extreme danger, carry chains or traction tires", etc. It boggles my mind that a non-English speaking driver can managed to get a drivers license when he probably had no idea what any of the streets read, or how any sort of insurance proceedings worked. He was probably driving without insurance on a brand new car because his dealership probably couldn't explain to him that he needed it.

If you were to live in foreign country, you are EXPECTED to know their language - no matter how broken or small you speak... but you are EXPECTED to, right? So yes I understand this GIANT problem is difficult and yes I understand that it's tough for immigrants to learn English. If their kids were born in USA, chance is they will learn and know English better than their parents. Yes Yes Yes I understand all that. What we could try to fix this problem is to promote English literacy and more budget in free English classes. Thanks god that in order to obtain American citizenship, you need to know English.

For the sake of America's future & security, I adamantly support the legislation of America's official language - ENGLISH! I do not want to see this country to become an ENGRISH COUNTRY. As far as I'm concerned, this is United States of America... not 50 Separate States of America with their own language and ethnicity for any immigrants. What's next? Translating American anthem and the Constitution in Spanish?

It's better post that you had posted and I know you have problem with non-english speaking to obtain driver license, same goes with some Americans as well, my point isn't solve any full problem because I don't want deal with uninsured drivers, no matters if english or non-english speaking, even if they are poor and file for bankruptcy after sued in court, you will not get anything.

I could careless if english only driver exam law to passes and enforce but my concern about non-english speaking people will drive without license or insurance, it could make worse than we think.

Some countries have dual or more than 2 official languages like Canada and it could happen to USA in next 50 years, unless you need to new amendment to be add to constitution but very hard to do, it is not unusual for America to get different culture because we offers driver exam in different language if people is unable to speaking english language.

It's disgusted me about our state, in some courthouse or driver exam office, they have exam with audio, it means any Americans know how to speaking english but can't read english can get license after pass the exam with audio. There's few employees at our workplace do know how to speaking english but can't read in english, it make communicate with paper and pen so more harder, it does make me so upset about USA don't have good law to control on dropout from HS and unable to read in english language.

How ironic it is that because of more students are from Spanish-speaking homes, we are failing in the areas of teaching all children English. How? The more kids who are ELL (English Language Learners) in the classroom, the more the teachers have to accommodate the curriculum so they can catch up...and by doing so, other kids fall behind.

I saw this in my daughter's kinder class in Las Vegas. I threw a FIT.

yea of course. When someone LIVES in America and wants to get a driver license, I expect him/her to speak SOME basic English. If they cannot - how are they gonna read traffic signs? it's for everybody's safety. If he/she doesn't want to bother learning English - then stick with bus/bike.

What about driving theory test and foreign language interpreter?

If legal immigrant/migrant want to have foreign language interpreter to help them to understand then pay out of their own pocket.
