Georgia: English-Only Driver's Tests

don't you remember? ask around. Handful of ADers have posted their accidents with uninsured drivers. do a simple google search "uninsured drivers statistic" and you will see tons of links.

Study Predicts More Uninsured Drivers On The Road
Where does your state rank in uninsured drivers?
IRC Estimates More Than 14 Percent of Drivers Are Uninsured (pdf file - reputable source)

Those links do not support your claim about non-English licensed drivers.

I assume that you didn´t read your own links... It saying that there are more and more uninsured drivers due U.S. economy and high employment rates which mean is the people who live in America. It didn´t say foreigners.

use your common sense. there are millions of illegal immigrants in USA. many can easily get driver license.

No, 3 links didn´t say anything about illegal or legal immigrants but just PEOPLE...

Are you saying that US offer driving lesson to million illegal immigrants? If yes, it make no sense to me.

Well, if those believe that one must learn English to drive in the USA then if we visit other countries not knowing their language, then we shouldnt drive in those countries too.

My German hubby applied International driver license for driving in foreign speaking including English countries. They can´t rent my hubby the car without see Internation driver license.

Most road signs are in symbols so English isnt really needed. Besides there are GPS systems to help navigate those who cannot read in English around the U.S.

I agree with the others that it would pose more problems than it is worth due to non-speaking English people not having transportation to go to work, English classes, or taking their children to schools. That could lead to another jump in uninsured motorists.

My hubby have no problem to understand foreign road signs when we were in other countries with foreign languages because he use good common sense. They asked my hubby where he come from before gave German description of road signs to help him to understand what form of road signs is before they rent him the car.

I have seen many tourists use good common sense when they drive in foreign countries with different langauge... ... :dunno2:

I wonder how other foreign handle Grammar/English education? Here in America, take pride in their writing skills.. Look at all those books and articles people have written. They feel that good grammars/English is a sign of intelligent. In America, people can tell someone have a learning disability just from their writing skills. If we mix it up with other languages, I wonder how we can tell someone has a disability? How do they research on education (which is how we got our teaching method today) ? I'm curious because people told me that English is hard which probably why we can tell someone has a learning disability or not.

Make me wonder what the purpose of mandatory English class in school??? Why not Mandatory Spanish grammar class from K-12th instead of English?

Respectfully disagree.

I often notice that some people who write a good English grammar, make no sense and immaturity, no intelligent and other people who write bad English grammar and have intelligent.

Good writing skill doesn´t make you intelligent but person itself.

I find interesting that you claim that Americans judge people´s writing grammar.

To me, their writing grammar is not important but their personalities.

I speaking out of my experience.

German driving lesson is very expensive that´s why I studied books of driving description for one year thru very complicated questions... it is likely "twist" questions... We (hearing and deaf Germans or legal immigrants/foreigners) are being recommend to study first until we familiar with questions, the driving description etc before apply for driving lesson.... to save our money...

I went to driving school for the deaf. I saw some deaf foreigners (legal immigrants) there. We have choice to take driving theory test to answer in foreign or German languages. Two Russian decided for Russian languages to answer the questions and road signs, etc. We all passed driving theory test with very complicated questions because we use good common. After passed driving theory test, then take driving test. Russians passed their driving test with German speaking because they use good common sense... You can´t take driving test if you fail driving theory test. We also passed our driving test to get liescne. *phew*

Many hearing foreigners (legal immagriants) prefer to study their own languages. They CAN order foreign language interpreters if they want to but it´s very expensive... that´s why many foreigerns learn German languages by their own willing until they familiar German languages then they can go to driving school without foreign language interpreters and can answer theory driving test with their own languages and can understand German speaking driving teacher during driving test.

It´s good to know that legal immigrants get equal as everyone including disablitiy rights because it is about equal.

I would feel discriminate if they say that driving school is for hearing only, not deaf that´s why I´m for legal immigrants who feel want to study with their own languages if they want to learn something.

What about driving theory test and foreign language interpreter?

If legal immigrant/migrant want to have foreign language interpreter to help them to understand then pay out of their own pocket.

good idea!

obviously - the illegal immigrants do not get counted to the statistic.

:topic:

Writing skill has NOTHING TO DO with Driver Test!! I don't care if the driver can write a novel or not. I don't care about their writing skill at all. This is about being able to SPEAK & READ ENGLISH so that we all can drive together harmoniously on same road.

Please re-read my post #31 and #35 and #42. Your husband is a LICENSED driver and LICENSED by German DMV... therefore he can drive in USA as a visitor with his International License. Now how about immigrants in America? If they wanted to be licensed by American DMV - then learn English... just like applying for American citizenship. If they don't want to learn English - then get a license from their own country.

WOW!!! 1 year???? I took driver ed for a few weeks and studied just for an hour for test and then done! I got about more than 95% correct so I got the permit. I know Germany's driver ed is the TOUGHEST in the world.

damn! we should have that in here!! make them pay for their own translators!! I like that. Either pay for their own translator out of their pocket or learn English for free! :thumb:

Yup, it's true and not surprised about his comment.

It's obviously make no sense, except for figure by opinion.

You are just crossed up the topic that you support, you said all driver test must be written in english only and make them to pay for translators, however you want foreigners to learn how to speaking english before take driver test, it doesn't make any sense that you had said.

Get translator to help them, it doesn't make them to learn how speaking english, even you don't realized that most services under government like DMV offers translator for free due law, I don't know what kind of law is, just like ADA for deaf people to get interpreter

You want make same as in Germany, it's compare like apple to orange like you did mentioned in previous post, America is just different, no need to make similar to other countries to make them to learn how speaking english.

Good point, Does Germany and UK offers driver test in different language, just wonders? I means without need for translator.

Interesting thread, just going a little bit offtopic. In New Zealand, there is 3 official languages: English, Maori and New Zealand Sign Language.

This thread makes me wonder if using NZSL for driver's tests/theory tests. Perhaps I could find out about this one.

I'm going back ontopic. I guess it is better to use common sense for driver's tests, understanding of the road rules, road signs for stop, yield etc.

Most of the individuals that are for English speaking only are forgetting one thing: English is already an international language.

* If one is to be an airline pilot--you have to speak English especially in communications tower in other countries in terms of navigation of airplanes/airlines. When we were travelling to remote places via airplane--they were communicating in Enlgish and not the official languages of the said country.

* English is the official language of commerce. If one is on the stock floor and wants to communicate to an individual in Sao Paulo--you have to speak English.

This whole rhetoric of English only speaking in this country is getting a little ridiculous when one considers the bigger picture.

rhetoric? here's a bigger picture? let's see -

1. many immigrants are converting their little communities in USA into a bigger community, demanding that we cater to them with translations and they didn't even bother learning English
2. they're milking our free services to their advantage so that they can send money to their families oversea and then move out when they collect enough money - in other word... they're a LEECH
3. population & diversity is rapidly growing and growing. Ever wonder why racism is still ongoing in here? Learn & speak English so we all can live together harmoniously
4. What's wrong with paying for your own translator? The states offer free English classes

I'm not trying to sound like Rush Limbaugh or xenophobic in here but it's a concern for me - financially, politically, and legally. I see our system being abused too often and this is the financial pit hole. Not war or bailout.

Actually it makes sense. It's a cost-effective way to resolve this issue. Think about it - what's a good motivation to make immigrants learn English? you pay for translators or get a free English lesson? For too long - immigrants have taken advantage of American's free service and they didn't even bother learning English. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Why are they converting CA into their "Little Mexico"??? Oh yea.... because we have free services, higher minimum wage, free & better education & resource, etc than Mexico. Guess what? it's not uncommon of many immigrants to move back to their country after several years.

Like I said - "use your common sense. there are millions of illegal immigrants in USA. many can easily get driver license."

I use my common sense, not make an assumption because the links written is about the people who live in America to ecnonmy and unemployment, not illegal or legal immigrants/migrants.

obviously - the illegal immigrants do not get counted to the statistic.

But it´s still no excuse to blame all illegal immigrants for cause the car accidents.

huh? where did I say that? how did you come up with that in the first place?

I am asking you because you know that they are being offer to get driving liecense by some of states in legal way in America. Right? If yes, how do you know it´s them who cause the road accidents?
