So all the forms at the DMV are Spanish-translated so that non-English speaking people can fill out the paperwork and take the written test in spanish... and yet all the road signs are written in English, shows the idiocracy of our situation.
And just cause they can recognize the few very common signs, doesn't mean they'll be able to interpret every situation they may encounter on the road. For example - there is a massive mountain pass to get over if you want to go to Portland or vice versa, and road conditions are always changing so they post an electronic billboard that feeds out information on the pass, which can be very critical to drivers, such as "pass closed" or "extreme danger, carry chains or traction tires", etc. It boggles my mind that a non-English speaking driver can managed to get a drivers license when he probably had no idea what any of the streets read, or how any sort of insurance proceedings worked. He was probably driving without insurance on a brand new car because his dealership probably couldn't explain to him that he needed it.
If you were to live in foreign country, you are EXPECTED to know their language - no matter how broken or small you speak... but you are EXPECTED to, right? So yes I understand this GIANT problem is difficult and yes I understand that it's tough for immigrants to learn English. If their kids were born in USA, chance is they will learn and know English better than their parents. Yes Yes Yes I understand all that. What we could try to fix this problem is to promote English literacy and more budget in free English classes. Thanks god that in order to obtain American citizenship, you need to know English.
For the sake of America's future & security, I adamantly support the legislation of America's official language - ENGLISH! I do not want to see this country to become an ENGRISH COUNTRY. As far as I'm concerned, this is United States of America... not 50 Separate States of America with their own language and ethnicity for any immigrants. What's next? Translating American anthem and the Constitution in Spanish?
