Georgia: English-Only Driver's Tests

yep... that's just my political stance. I'd support any politician who wants to pass that legislation (as long as that politician isn't a racist cuckoo like Limbaugh).

I don't, it make unfair to foreign investment and many other reasons.

Look at Europe, they have alot of different languages to speak then there's no point to make english only, even it don't make better and you could get in accident by unlicensed, uninsured driver due no foreign language on driver test or denied for not speaking english.

Comparing USA to Europe is apple-orange because we are United States of America with only 2 other countries as our neighbors - Canada and Mexico. Europe has many nations as their neighbors. That's why they formed EU - European Union and we have NAFTA (somewhat) as well.

Like I said - Canadian and Mexican drivers are allowed to drive in America. If the immigrants want to be licensed by American DMV - then please learn basic English. it's not that hard. :cool2:

I agree with Jiro wholeheartedly.

I never really realized how serious the immigration situation was until I moved to California, where I see it firsthand.

The state is gradually turning to Mexico. Signs everywhere are changing to Spanish. Stores are Spanish. Some jobs require workers to speak Spanish.

Wtf?! And I see Mexican flags flying all over the city. And it pisses me off. I have nothing against Mexico and its beautuful culture, flag, customs, and language. But right now we are still fighting a war... and this is still the USA. We should be flying USA flags. Here they are, living in US to have better lives, to use our resources, etc. and YET they wave THEIR flag instead of respecting and using the USA flag.

Where do we draw the line? Georgia knows. Take our country back. Be proud red-blooded Americans. And wave the Old Glory with pride.

I wonder how other foreign handle Grammar/English education? Here in America, take pride in their writing skills.. Look at all those books and articles people have written. They feel that good grammars/English is a sign of intelligent. In America, people can tell someone have a learning disability just from their writing skills. If we mix it up with other languages, I wonder how we can tell someone has a disability? How do they research on education (which is how we got our teaching method today) ? I'm curious because people told me that English is hard which probably why we can tell someone has a learning disability or not.

Make me wonder what the purpose of mandatory English class in school??? Why not Mandatory Spanish grammar class from K-12th instead of English?

maybe because we're not Mexico? How about a mandatory English grammar class from K-12th grade in Mexico? that way - it'll solve our problem

hmmm.. I can't understand why they have to come here for slave wages and educations. Shouldn't Mexico take care of the people in their country? oh well. I suppose it is the environment and lack of resources that keep people from making a decent living, but then again, I've seen countries in harsher environment do pretty good.

We should give all of them American Citizenships, teach them about America, and slowly shove Mexico out of the picture :P (I bet they wouldn't like that at all, but who knows, maybe they will get their act together in order to keep their Mexico heritage alive ??? )

btw, I don't think other countries look very safe to drive? But then again, I could be wrong.. just been watching international tv for awhile and it just doesn't seem too safe.

And in America,I think we have more roads than most countries So new signs will pop up now and then especially if you go states to states when the rules change. (before you say that the federal should take care of the roads, I promise you that people in D.C. have never experience road condition such as West Virginia.. Just the local state know what is best way to handle the traffic because they are the ones who have drive it everyday)

It is very helpful to know English.

I think there are two issues at hand. First the idea of "English only" as our countries offical and sanctioned language. And the issue of immigration.

If we become an "English only" country, what will that do to Deaf schools??

And if we make it impossible for people to take the test in their native language, be realistic, they will just drive without a licence, and therefore will be unable to get insurance. Is that what you want?

well then how do deafies get driver licenses right now? Is there ASL-translated driver test?

we already have bunch of unlicensed and/or uninsured drivers anyway

No, I'm sure that they do the English test, but this is just one of the steps to becoming "English only", and I am against it.

Right we have too many, and this will make it worse.

then your claim about deafies not being able to take English-only test is fallacious

Ok, both you and I have different brief and it doesn't make me to support illegal immigants, it is really different situation.

For last paragraph, it isn't existing in many states right now and they are allowed to take test in different language.

you mean a deaf person go driving all day without reading a single english sign? We have a blinking alert sign that let us know there is traffic jam ahead of us and for us to take a detour. It would be a disaster if I couldn't read that.

then your claim about deafies not being able to take English-only test is fallacious

No, you aren't paying attention. I said "What will happen to our Deaf schools if our country goes to English only". It is unrelated to driving tests. Please read more carefully.

and why would English-only policy affect deaf schools? English is American spoken & written language... it has nothing to do with sign language. beside - ASL is an American language as well. Again your claim is fallacious.

If they rule that English is the only language that is allowed in goverment and school, how can they then say that ASL is ok? Why is that language ok but Spanish isn't?

ASL still depend on English as their written language. Braille still depend on English for spoken language.

I don't think a spanish deaf person uses ASL (as I was told each countries have their own sign languages for the deaf).

ASL is NOT English. If the country ONLY recognizes English as the offical language ASL can NOT be the language of instruction outside a foreign language classroom. That would mean that ASL would NOT be recognized as an offical language in America. Do you want that?

?????????????????????????????????????? I have absolutely no idea where you're going with this. You're treating ASL like it's a french language. America = English & ASL. period. is it clear enough for you?

ASL is a substitution for SPOKEN ENGLISH communication as English has no visual form of language. Like I said - this thread is about SPOKEN & WRITTEN language. Spanish is a SPOKEN & WRITTEN language of Mexico. They have no place in America. Tell me what American deafies read and write in? Spanish? French?

either way.... this is America. I understand this country is built by immigrants but here's a problem - if we all are going to live together in this country, then we need to be on a common ground where it's easier for all of us to live together harmoniously. so how do we do that? a common language - ENGLISH. Again - I'm not asking each immigrants to have English skill at college-level. Driver test's english is barely at high school level
