Martha Stewart Sentenced To 5 Months In Prison

Speaking outside the New York courthouse where she was sentenced Friday, Stewart said she regretted that what she called a personal matter mushroomed in a way that hurt her employees and their families.

Stewart thanked those who supported her and corresponded with her -- and urged them to keep showing support by buying her products and subscribing to her magazine.

She said her legal troubles shouldn't have "any effect whatsoever" on her company.

"I'll be back," she promised. "I'm not afraid. Not afraid whatsoever. I'm very sorry it had to come to this."

U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum also sentenced the celebrity homemaker to two years of supervisory probation and a $30,000 fine.

The judge granted Stewart's request that her prison time be delayed until after the appeal of her conviction is heard.

Stewart faced as much as 16 months behind bars.

Just before her sentence was pronounced, Stewart asked the judge to "remember all the good I have done."

"Today is a shameful today. It's shameful for me, for my family and for my company," she said.

Supporters greeted Stewart as she arrived at a federal courthouse in New York for her sentencing.

They applauded, and one shouted, "Hold your head high, Martha!"

Stewart, wearing a black pantsuit, showed no emotion as she strode briskly through a media horde.

Stewart Appeals Conviction

But the sentence doesn't end the case.

Stewart is seeking a new trial because of the perjury charges lodged against a government witness.

Last week, Cedarbaum turned her down, saying there was "no reasonable likelihood" that the allegedly perjured testimony could have affected the jury's verdict.

In advance of Friday's sentencing, there was a letter-writing campaign to Cedarbaum on Stewart's behalf.

More than 1,000 letter writers urged the judge to sentence Stewart to no more than community service.

On a Web site dedicated to keeping Stewart out of prison, her fans are also circulating a petition asking President Bush to pardon the famous homemaker.

Stewart and her former Merrill Lynch stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, were convicted of lying to the government about why Stewart sold shares of ImClone Systems stock in late 2001, just before the price plunged.

Bacanovic is being sentenced separately Friday afternoon.

Stewart Pitches Company

Investors have reacted bullishly to news of Stewart's sentencing and in so doing, have boosted her net worth.

Shares of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia rose nearly 30 percent after the company's founder was sentenced.

After the sentencing, Stewart urged consumers to continue doing business with the company.

Said Stewart, "perhaps all of you out there can continue to show your support by subscribing to our magazine, by buying our products, by encouraging our advertisers to come back in full force to our magazines. Our magazines are great, they deserve your support."

Stewart still holds a 61 percent stake in the company.

Reason why.. In my opition..
Really she not necessary goes to jail what reason.. She has not "STEAL" the marketing of stock" and has her choice to sell her stock before came into the business went falling down quicker because of her.. No..

Otherwise, I wish Judge grant her and must sell her own values stuff and to pay gradiutite(sp) to the business company wha..ever name it.. To prevent wreckage the stock investment the business.. I think the best suggest but.. Judge is play act a God!!! Have not senes 2nd opition!

she should get at lear 1 or 2 more years of prision... 5 extra months is too short..

Well Martha got RAILORADED for lying about a crime she WASNT charged with.

Its just plain fucking ridiculous to sentence somebody for lying about a non-existant crime. Besides Martha is a DEMOCRAT.

Kenny Boy Lay stole much more $ from Enron and he stay damned scoot free for 3 fucking years from the collapse of Enron until his indictment last week.

38,000 profit for Martha is that cheap compared to Kenny Boy Lay's billions that he and his associates stole.

right now Martha's appealing all the way to the Supreme Court. She wont report to jail until she has exhausted all her appeals.

Right. Why should she get a jail sentence for lying when former President Bill Clinton lied under oath during direct questioning, and he didn't get punished at all?
(I don't know what her being a Democrat has to do with it.) :dunno:

I kind of wish the poll question allowed for a choice of reason for not agreeing with the sentence. That is, not agree because the sentence was too harsh, or not agree because the sentence was not harsh enough.

Personally, I don't see what "crime" she committed. And, I HOPE she wins her appeals. I really think what it comes down to is she upset the wrong person somewhere along the line, and they nailed her.

But, I could be wrong. Something we ALL need to keep in mind here...

Regardless of how each of us feels about this, NONE OF US really knows what happened or what has really been said. We just know what has been REPORTED to us. So, please keep this in mind when you watch your 6:00 news.

Don't believe everything you read.

Some people will do ANYTHING to give a powerful person a bad reputation.

Martha got convicted, in my opinion, basically because she was one of the first women to break thru the ranks of men in the investment world and she was set up to be convicted for "crimes" committed by men everyday. They thought they'd set an example of her but, mark my words, she will prevail in the end cos she has her Daddy's strength.

*The good ole boy network shook up a bit--hey, what's dat brown stuff in your shorts, guys?* :D

She's a celebrity... that's why she got a lesser sentence! :fu2: She deserves more! She deserves to be in prison long enough to make people forget who she is so when she gets out and gets her own show back, people will go, "Huh? Who the hell is she?"

from what i heard... she recieved money from stock reason.. she cheated on stock by having someone telling her that the stock will go down by any time.. so she quickly sold her shares.. am i right? and that's illegal thing to do.

she stole like, billions of dollars from ppl's retirement funds and all she can get is to be in prison for 5 months?? dammit, it's like there's no real justice anymore...

If I was the judge, I sentence her to be in prison for a year and a half!

I think he has Martha's case mixed up with someone else.

Martha was convicted for lying and obstruction, not for stealing. Also, she was not convicted of being mean or unfriendly. So far, that is not a crime. ;)
